Ising Model Coupled to Three-Dimensional Quantum Gravity
We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model coupled to
three-dimensional quantum gravity based on a summation over dynamical
triangulations. These were done both in the microcanonical ensemble, with the
number of points in the triangulation and the number of Ising spins fixed, and
in the grand canoncal ensemble. We have investigated the two possible cases of
the spins living on the vertices of the triangulation (``diect'' case) and the
spins living in the middle of the tetrahedra (``dual'' case). We observed phase
transitions which are probably second order, and found that the dual
implementation more effectively couples the spins to the quantum gravity.Comment: 11 page
An Effective Model for Crumpling in Two Dimensions?
We investigate the crumpling transition for a dynamically triangulated random
surface embedded in two dimensions using an effective model in which the
disordering effect of the variables on the correlations of the normals is
replaced by a long-range ``antiferromagnetic'' term. We compare the results
from a Monte Carlo simulation with those obtained for the standard action which
retains the 's and discuss the nature of the phase transition.Comment: 5 page
Numerical Studies of the Two Dimensional XY Model with Symmetry Breaking Fields
We present results of numerical studies of the two dimensional XY model with
four and eight fold symmetry breaking fields. This model has recently been
shown to describe hydrogen induced reconstruction on the W(100) surface. Based
on mean-field and renormalization group arguments,we first show how the
interplay between the anisotropy fields can give rise to different phase
transitions in the model. When the fields are compatible with each other there
is a continuous phase transition when the fourth order field is varied from
negative to positive values. This transition becomes discontinuous at low
temperatures. These two regimes are separated by a multicritical point. In the
case of competing four and eight fold fields, the first order transition at low
temperatures opens up into two Ising transitions. We then use numerical methods
to accurately locate the position of the multicritical point, and to verify the
nature of the transitions. The different techniques used include Monte Carlo
histogram methods combined with finite size scaling analysis, the real space
Monte Carlo Renormalization Group method, and the Monte Carlo Transfer Matrix
method. Our numerical results are in good agreement with the theoretical
arguments.Comment: 29 pages, HU-TFT-94-36, to appear in Phys. Rev. B, Vol 50, November

Grand-Canonical Ensemble of Random Surfaces with Four Species of Ising Spins
The grand-canonical ensemble of dynamically triangulated surfaces coupled to
four species of Ising spins (c=2) is simulated on a computer. The effective
string susceptibility exponent for lattices with up to 1000 vertices is found
to be . A specific scenario for models is
conjectured.Comment: LaTeX, 11 pages + 1 postscript figure appended, preprint LPTHE-Orsay

Dynamic Critical Behavior of the Swendsen-Wang Algorithm: The Two-Dimensional 3-State Potts Model Revisited
We have performed a high-precision Monte Carlo study of the dynamic critical
behavior of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the two-dimensional 3-state Potts
model. We find that the Li-Sokal bound ()
is almost but not quite sharp. The ratio seems to diverge
either as a small power () or as a logarithm.Comment: 35 pages including 3 figures. Self-unpacking file containing the

Computing the Roughening Transition of Ising and Solid-On-Solid Models by BCSOS Model Matching
We study the roughening transition of the dual of the 2D XY model, of the
Discrete Gaussian model, of the Absolute Value Solid-On-Solid model and of the
interface in an Ising model on a 3D simple cubic lattice. The investigation
relies on a renormalization group finite size scaling method that was proposed
and successfully tested a few years ago. The basic idea is to match the
renormalization group flow of the interface observables with that of the
exactly solvable BCSOS model. Our estimates for the critical couplings are
, and for
the XY-model, the Discrete Gaussian model and the Absolute Value Solid-On-Solid
model, respectively. For the inverse roughening temperature of the Ising
interface we find . To the best of our knowledge,
these are the most precise estimates for these parameters published so far.Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX file, no figure
On the Stability of the Mean-Field Glass Broken Phase under Non-Hamiltonian Perturbations
We study the dynamics of the SK model modified by a small non-hamiltonian
perturbation. We study aging, and we find that on the time scales investigated
by our numerical simulations it survives a small perturbation (and is destroyed
by a large one). If we assume we are observing a transient behavior the scaling
of correlation times versus the asymmetry strength is not compatible with the
one expected for the spherical model. We discuss the slow power law decay of
observable quantities to equilibrium, and we show that for small perturbations
power like decay is preserved. We also discuss the asymptotically large time
region on small lattices.Comment: 34 page
Matrix model approach to the flux lattice melting in superconductors
We investigate a gauged matrix model in the large limit which is closely
related to the superconductor fluctuation and the flux lattice melting in two
dimensions. With the use of saddle point method the free energy is expanded up
to eighth order for the coupling constant . In the case that the coefficient
of quadratic term of the Ginzburg-Landau matrix model is negative, a critical
point is obtained in the large limit and the relation between this
phase transition and the 2D flux lattice melting transition is discussed.Comment: REVTeX file, 20 pages + 3 figures attached as uu-encoded ps-file
A Potts/Ising Correspondence on Thin Graphs
We note that it is possible to construct a bond vertex model that displays
q-state Potts criticality on an ensemble of phi3 random graphs of arbitrary
topology, which we denote as ``thin'' random graphs in contrast to the fat
graphs of the planar diagram expansion.
Since the four vertex model in question also serves to describe the critical
behaviour of the Ising model in field, the formulation reveals an isomorphism
between the Potts and Ising models on thin random graphs. On planar graphs a
similar correspondence is present only for q=1, the value associated with
percolation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Analysis of Lattice Model in
We present a simple, sophisticated method to capture renormalization group
flow in Monte Carlo simulation, which provides important information of
critical phenomena. We applied the method to lattice model and
obtained renormalization flow diagram which well reproduces theoretically
predicted behavior of continuum model. We also show that the method
can be easily applied to much more complicated models, such as frustrated spin
models.Comment: 13 pages, revtex, 7 figures. v1:Submitted to PRE. v2:considerably
