Wormhole cosmic strings
We construct regular multi-wormhole solutions to a gravitating model
in three space-time dimensions, and extend these solutions to cylindrical
traversable wormholes in four and five dimensions. We then discuss the
possibility of identifying wormhole mouths in pairs to give rise to Wheeler
wormholes. Such an identification is consistent with the original field
equations only in the absence of the -model source, but with possible
naked cosmic string sources. The resulting Wheeler wormhole space-times are
flat outside the sources and may be asymptotically Minkowskian.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures (hard copy available on request
Creep motion of a granular pile induced by thermal cycling
We report a time-resolved study of the dynamics associated with the slow
compaction of a granular column submitted to thermal cycles. The column height
displays a complex behavior: for a large amplitude of the temperature cycles,
the granular column settles continuously, experiencing a small settling at each
cycle; By contrast, for small-enough amplitude, the column exhibits a
discontinuous and intermittent activity: successive collapses are separated by
quiescent periods whose duration is exponentially distributed. We then discuss
potential mechanisms which would account for both the compaction and the
transition at finite amplitude.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Topologically massive gravito-electrodynamics: exact solutions
We construct two classes of exact solutions to the field equations of
topologically massive electrodynamics coupled to topologically massive gravity
in 2 + 1 dimensions. The self-dual stationary solutions of the first class are
horizonless, asymptotic to the extreme BTZ black-hole metric, and regular for a
suitable parameter domain. The diagonal solutions of the second class, which
exist if the two Chern-Simons coupling constants exactly balance, include
anisotropic cosmologies and static solutions with a pointlike horizon.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, no figure
Analytical Results for Multifractal Properties of Spectra of Quasiperiodic Hamiltonians near the Periodic Chain
The multifractal properties of the electronic spectrum of a general
quasiperiodic chain are studied in first order in the quasiperiodic potential
strength. Analytical expressions for the generalized dimensions are found and
are in good agreement with numerical simulations. These first order results do
not depend on the irrational incommensurability.Comment: 10 Pages in RevTeX, 2 Postscript figure
The affine preservers of non-singular matrices
When K is an arbitrary field, we study the affine automorphisms of M_n(K)
that stabilize GL_n(K). Using a theorem of Dieudonn\'e on maximal affine
subspaces of singular matrices, this is easily reduced to the known case of
linear preservers when n>2 or #K>2. We include a short new proof of the more
general Flanders' theorem for affine subspaces of M_{p,q}(K) with bounded rank.
We also find that the group of affine transformations of M_2(F_2) that
stabilize GL_2(F_2) does not consist solely of linear maps. Using the theory of
quadratic forms over F_2, we construct explicit isomorphisms between it, the
symplectic group Sp_4(F_2) and the symmetric group S_6.Comment: 13 pages, very minor corrections from the first versio
Black hole mass and angular momentum in 2+1 gravity
We propose a new definition for the mass and angular momentum of neutral or
electrically charged black holes in 2+1 gravity with two Killing vectors. These
finite conserved quantities, associated with the SL(2,R) invariance of the
reduced mechanical system, are shown to be identical to the quasilocal
conserved quantities for an improved gravitational action corresponding to
mixed boundary conditions. They obey a general Smarr-like formula and, in all
cases investigated, are consistent with the first law of black hole
thermodynamics. Our framework is applied to the computation of the mass and
angular momentum of black hole solutions to several field-theoretical models.Comment: 23 pages, 3 references added, to be published in Physical Review
The cosmological gravitating model: solitons and black holes
We derive and analyze exact static solutions to the gravitating O(3)
model with cosmological constant in (2+1) dimensions. Both signs of the
gravitational and cosmological constants are considered. Our solutions include
geodesically complete spacetimes, and two classes of black holes.Comment: 10 pages, late
Motion and Trajectories of Particles Around Three-Dimensional Black Holes
The motion of relativistic particles around three dimensional black holes
following the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism is studied. It follows that the
Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be separated and reduced to quadratures in analogy
with the four dimensional case. It is shown that: a) particles are trapped by
the black hole independently of their energy and angular momentum, b) matter
alway falls to the centre of the black hole and cannot understake a motion with
stables orbits as in four dimensions. For the extreme values of the angular
momentum of the black hole, we were able to find exact solutions of the
equations of motion and trajectories of a test particle.Comment: Plain TeX, 9pp, IPNO-TH 93/06, DFTUZ 93/0
