Evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game on hierarchical lattices
An evolutionary prisoner's dilemma (PD) game is studied with players located
on a hierarchical structure of layered square lattices. The players can follow
two strategies [D (defector) and C (cooperator)] and their income comes from PD
games with the ``neighbors.'' The adoption of one of the neighboring strategies
is allowed with a probability dependent on the payoff difference. Monte Carlo
simulations are performed to study how the measure of cooperation is affected
by the number of hierarchical levels (Q) and by the temptation to defect.
According to the simulations the highest frequency of cooperation can be
observed at the top level if the number of hierarchical levels is low (Q<4).
For larger Q, however, the highest frequency of cooperators occurs in the
middle layers. The four-level hierarchical structure provides the highest
average (total) income for the whole community.Comment: appendix adde
Optimization of laser-plasma injector via beam loading effects using ionization-induced injection
Simulations of ionization induced injection in a laser driven plasma
wakefield show that high-quality electron injectors in the 50-200 MeV range can
be achieved in a gas cell with a tailored density profile. Using the PIC code
Warp with parameters close to existing experimental conditions, we show that
the concentration of in a hydrogen plasma with a tailored
density profile is an efficient parameter to tune electron beam properties
through the control of the interplay between beam loading effects and varying
accelerating field in the density profile. For a given laser plasma
configuration, with moderate normalized laser amplitude, and maximum
electron plasma density, , the
optimum concentration results in a robust configuration to generate electrons
at 150~MeV with a rms energy spread of 4\% and a spectral charge density of

Strategies for the evolution of sex
We find that the hypothesis made by Jan, Stauffer and Moseley [Theory in
Biosc., 119, 166 (2000)] for the evolution of sex, namely a strategy devised to
escape extinction due to too many deleterious mutations, is sufficient but not
necessary for the successful evolution of a steady state population of sexual
individuals within a finite population. Simply allowing for a finite
probability for conversion to sex in each generation also gives rise to a
stable sexual population, in the presence of an upper limit on the number of
deleterious mutations per individual. For large values of this probability, we
find a phase transition to an intermittent, multi-stable regime. On the other
hand, in the limit of extremely slow drive, another transition takes place to a
different steady state distribution, with fewer deleterious mutations within

Measurement error caused by spatial misalignment in environmental epidemiology
Copyright @ 2009 Gryparis et al - Published by Oxford University Press.In many environmental epidemiology studies, the locations and/or times of exposure measurements and health assessments do not match. In such settings, health effects analyses often use the predictions from an exposure model as a covariate in a regression model. Such exposure predictions contain some measurement error as the predicted values do not equal the true exposures. We provide a framework for spatial measurement error modeling, showing that smoothing induces a Berkson-type measurement error with nondiagonal error structure. From this viewpoint, we review the existing approaches to estimation in a linear regression health model, including direct use of the spatial predictions and exposure simulation, and explore some modified approaches, including Bayesian models and out-of-sample regression calibration, motivated by measurement error principles. We then extend this work to the generalized linear model framework for health outcomes. Based on analytical considerations and simulation results, we compare the performance of all these approaches under several spatial models for exposure. Our comparisons underscore several important points. First, exposure simulation can perform very poorly under certain realistic scenarios. Second, the relative performance of the different methods depends on the nature of the underlying exposure surface. Third, traditional measurement error concepts can help to explain the relative practical performance of the different methods. We prove that there exist positive constants and such that for any integer the set of satisfying for infinitely many natural numbers is of full Lebesque measure. This substantially improves the previous results where similar sets have been measured in terms of the Hausdorff dimension. We also obtain similar bounds for exponential sums with monomials when . Finally, we obtain lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of large values of general exponential polynomials
Health, Climate Change and Sustainability: A systematic Review and Thematic Analysis of the Literature
Background: Evidence of climate change and its impact continues to be accumulated, and it is argued that the consequences of climate change are likely to result in an increased demand on health services. It has been claimed that climate change presents new challenges for health services and that strategies should be adopted to address these challenges. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to map published literature on health, climate change and sustainability by categorising papers according to their focus on effects, strategy and actions, and to provide a thematic analysis of their content. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted via a range of healthcare related databases i.e. Pubmed, Medline, CINAHL, AMED, ASSIA, IBSS and ISI Web of Knowledge. Searches focussed upon papers published in English between 1998 and 2008. Retrieved papers were studied by the authors in order to inform the thematic analysis of their content. Results: A total of 114 publications were retrieved, of which 36 met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. These 36 publications were categorised and are discussed according to their focus on: effects/impacts, strategy/policy, action/examples. Conclusions: A number of papers report the potential health effects of climate change while others report policies and strategies to tackle these effects. However there is an urgent need to identify and report on the implementation of strategies to mitigate and adapt to these challenges and to publish real examples of actions. Actions that are taken need to be evidence/policy based, and implementations monitored, evaluated and published
Defensive alliances in spatial models of cyclical population interactions
As a generalization of the 3-strategy Rock-Scissors-Paper game dynamics in
space, cyclical interaction models of six mutating species are studied on a
square lattice, in which each species is supposed to have two dominant, two
subordinated and a neutral interacting partner. Depending on their interaction
topologies, these systems can be classified into four (isomorphic) groups
exhibiting significantly different behaviors as a function of mutation rate. On
three out of four cases three (or four) species form defensive alliances which
maintain themselves in a self-organizing polydomain structure via cyclic
invasions. Varying the mutation rate this mechanism results in an ordering
phenomenon analogous to that of magnetic Ising model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Darwinian Selection and Non-existence of Nash Equilibria
We study selection acting on phenotype in a collection of agents playing
local games lacking Nash equilibria. After each cycle one of the agents losing
most games is replaced by a new agent with new random strategy and game
partner. The network generated can be considered critical in the sense that the
lifetimes of the agents is power law distributed. The longest surviving agents
are those with the lowest absolute score per time step. The emergent ecology is
characterized by a broad range of behaviors. Nevertheless, the agents tend to
