U B V R I Photometry of Stellar Structures throughout the Disk of the Barred Galaxy NGC 3367
We report new detailed surface U, B, V, R, and I photometry of 81 stellar
structures in the disk of the barred galaxy NGC 3367. The images show many
different structures indicating that star formation is going on in the most
part of the disk. NGC 3367 is known to have a very high concentration of
molecular gas distribution in the central regions of the galaxy and bipolar
synchrotron emission from the nucleus with two lobes (at 6 kpc) forming a
triple structure similar to a radio galaxy. We have determined the U, B, V, R,
and I magnitudes and U - B, B - V, U - V, and V - I colors for the central
region (nucleus), a region which includes supernovae 2003 AA, and 79 star
associations throughout NGC 3367. Estimation of ages of star associations is
very difficult due to several factors, among them: filling factor, metallicity,
spatial distribution of each structure and the fact that we estimated the
magnitudes with a circular aperture of 16 pixels in diameter, equivalent to
kpc. However, if the colors derived for NGC 3367 were similar to
the colors expected of star clusters with theoretical evolutionary star tracks
developed for the LMC and had a similar metallicity, NGC 3367 show 51 percent
of the observed structures with age type SWB I (few tens of Myrs), with seven
sources outside the bright surface brightness visible disk of NGC 3367.Comment: Accepted for publication (abr 2007) in The Astronomical Journal (July

Companions of Bright Barred Shapley Ames Galaxies
Companion galaxy environment for a subset of 78 bright and nearby barred
galaxies from the Shapley Ames Catalog is presented. Among spiral barred
galaxies there are Seyfert galaxies, galaxies with circumnuclear structures,
galaxies not associated with any large scale galaxy cloud structure, galaxies
with peculiar disk morphology (crooked arms) and galaxies with normal disk
morphology; the list includes all Hubble types. The companion galaxy list
includes number of companion galaxies within 20 diameters (D25), their Hubble
type and projected separation distance. Additionally, companion environment was
searched for four known active spiral galaxies, three of them are Seyfert
galaxies, namely, NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5548 and one is a starburst galaxy,
M82. Among the results obtained it is noted that the only spiral barred galaxy
classified as Sy 1 in our list has no companions within a projected distance of
20 diameters; 6 out of 10 Sy 2 bar galaxies have no companions within 10
diamters, 6 out of 10 Sy 2 galaxies have one or more companions at projected
separation distances between 10 and 20 diameters; 6 out of 12 galaxies with
circumnuclear structures have 2 or more companions within 20 diametersComment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 40 pages incl.

The Kinematically Measured Pattern Speeds of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245
We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method to derive
the bar pattern speed in the SB(r)b galaxy NGC 2523 and the SB(r)0/a galaxy NGC
4245 using the Calcium Triplet absorption lines. These galaxies were selected
because they have strong inner rings which can be used as independent tracers
of the pattern speed. The pattern speed of NGC 2523 is 26.4 6.1 km
s kpc, assuming an inclination of 49.7 and a distance
of 51.0 Mpc. The pattern speed of NGC 4245 is 75.5 31.3 km s
kpc, assuming an inclination of 35.4 and a distance of 12.6
Mpc. The ratio of the corotation radius to the bar radius of NGC 2523 and NGC
4245 is 1.4 0.3 and 1.1 0.5, respectively. These values place the
bright inner rings near and slightly inside the corotation radius, as predicted
by barred galaxy theory. Within the uncertainties, both galaxies are found to
have fast bars that likely indicate dark halos of low central concentration.
The photometric properties, bar strengths, and disk stabilities of both
galaxies are also discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, 11 figures, 2

HI aperture synthesis and optical observations of the pair of galaxies NGC 6907 and 6908
NGC 6908, a S0 galaxy situated in direction of NGC 6907, was only recently
recognized as a distinct galaxy, instead of only a part of NGC 6907. We present
21 cm radio synthesis observations obtained with the GMRT and optical images
and spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini North telescope of this pair of
interacting galaxies. From the radio observations we obtained the velocity
field and the HI column density map of the whole region containing the NGC
6907/8 pair, and by means of the Gemini multi-object spectroscopy we obtained
high quality photometric images and resolution spectra sampling the
two galaxies. By comparing the rotation curve of NGC 6907 obtained from the two
opposite sides around the main kinematic axis, we were able to distinguish the
normal rotational velocity field from the velocity components produced by the
interaction between the two galaxies. Taking into account the rotational
velocity of NGC 6907 and the velocity derived from the absorption lines for NGC
6908, we verified that the relative velocity between these systems is lower
than 60 km s. The emission lines observed in the direction of NGC 6908,
not typical of S0 galaxies, have the same velocity expected for the NGC 6907
rotation curve. Some of them, superimposed on the absorption profiles, which
reinforces the idea that they were not formed in NGC 6908. Finally, the HI
profile exhibits details of the interaction, showing three components: one for
NGC 6908, another for the excited gas in the NGC 6907 disk and a last one for
the gas with higher relative velocities left behind NGC 6908 by dynamical
friction, used to estimate the time when the interaction started in years ago.Comment: 11 pages, 5 tables, 13 figures. Corrected typos. Accepted for

Fabry Perot Halpha Observations of the Barred Spiral NGC 3367
We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral
galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to
the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis
PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are
observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the
eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three
spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc.
Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all the disk but
mainly from the semi circle formed by the string of south western Halpha
sources. An estimate of the dynamical mass is M(dyn)=2x10^11 Msolar.Comment: Accepted to be published in May 2001 issue in the A.J. 19 pages, 7

Star Formation Efficiency in the Central 1 kpc Region of Early-Type Spiral Galaxies
It has been reported recently that there are some early-type spiral (Sa--Sab)
galaxies having evident star-forming regions which concentrate in their own
central 1-kpc. In such central region, is the mechanism of the star formation
distinct from that in disks of spiral galaxies? To reveal this, we estimate the
star formation efficiency (SFE) in this central 1-kpc star-forming region of
some early-type spiral galaxies, taking account of the condition for this 1-kpc
region to be self-gravitating. Using two indicators of present star formation
rate (H and infrared luminosity), we estimate the SFE to be a few
percents. This is equivalent to the observational SFE in the disks of late-type
spiral (Sb--) galaxies. This coincidence may support the universality of the
mean SFE of spiral galaxies reported in the recent studies. That is, we find no
evidence of distinct mechanism of the star formation in the central 1-kpc
region of early-type galaxies. Also, we examine the structure of the central
star-forming region, and discuss a method for estimating the mass of
star-forming regions.Comment: accepted by A
Central Activity in the Barred Galaxy NGC 3367
We report the radio continuum structure of the barred galaxy NGC 3367 with an
angular resolution of 4''.5. The radio structure indicates emission from the
disk and from a triple source consisting of the nucleus straddled by extended
sources (the lobes). The triple source shows an excess of radio continuum
emission compared to the emission expected from the total radio - Halpha
correlation, suggesting a non-thermal origin probably related to AGN activity
and no to star formation processes. The triple source is about 12 kpc in
diameter at a P.A. 40, close (but not aligned) to that of the stellar bar P.A.
65. Only the southwest lobe is polarized. The polarizatrion asymmetry between
the two lobes suggests that the triple source axis is slightly out of the
plane.Comment: 13 latex pages, 8 figures. To appear in Astronomical Journal, July
