Patient involvement in selection of immunosuppressive regimen following transplantation.
Transplantation has made a considerable difference to the lives of many patients. However, feedback from patients indicates that although having a transplant is a hugely positive experience, having to take medications indefinitely is one of the biggest challenges. An ideal scenario would be no medications following a transplant. A compromise would be a minimal number of medications, with minimal restrictions and as simple a regimen as possible. Although there is considerable research going into fine-tuning the management of the immune response to a transplant, to date there is no universal regimen that enables patients to remain free of immunosuppressant medications, making adherence paramount to maintain long-term allograft survival. This paper reviews the available immunosuppressant regimens and factors influencing choice from both the clinician's and the patient's perspective. Factors influencing the decision-making process, such as quality of life for patients, their satisfaction, acceptability, and adherence uptake are reviewed. We conclude with a further assessment of patient choice as a factor in regimen selection, its impact on adherence, and its implications
Interactions with combined chemical cues inform harvester ant foragers' decisions to leave the nest in search of food.
Social insect colonies operate without central control or any global assessment of what needs to be done by workers. Colony organization arises from the responses of individuals to local cues. Red harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus) regulate foraging using interactions between returning and outgoing foragers. The rate at which foragers return with seeds, a measure of food availability, sets the rate at which outgoing foragers leave the nest on foraging trips. We used mimics to test whether outgoing foragers inside the nest respond to the odor of food, oleic acid, the odor of the forager itself, cuticular hydrocarbons, or a combination of both with increased foraging activity. We compared foraging activity, the rate at which foragers passed a line on a trail, before and after the addition of mimics. The combination of both odors, those of food and of foragers, is required to stimulate foraging. The addition of blank mimics, mimics coated with food odor alone, or mimics coated with forager odor alone did not increase foraging activity. We compared the rates at which foragers inside the nest interacted with other ants, blank mimics, and mimics coated with a combination of food and forager odor. Foragers inside the nest interacted more with mimics coated with combined forager/seed odors than with blank mimics, and these interactions had the same effect as those with other foragers. Outgoing foragers inside the nest entrance are stimulated to leave the nest in search of food by interacting with foragers returning with seeds. By using the combined odors of forager cuticular hydrocarbons and of seeds, the colony captures precise information, on the timescale of seconds, about the current availability of food
High Resolution Near-Infrared Spectra of Protostars
We present new high resolution (R = 21,000) near-infrared (2 microns)
spectroscopic observations of a sample of Class I and flat-spectrum
protostellar objects in the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. None of the five Class I
spectra show CO v = 0 -- 2 absorption features, consistent with high K-band
continuum veilings, 4 <= r_k <= 20 and fast stellar rotation, assuming that the
underlying protostellar photospheres are of late spectral type, as is suggested
by the low luminosities of most of these objects. Two of the flat-spectrum
protostellar objects also show no absorption features and are likely to be
highly veiled. The remaining two flat-spectrum sources show weak, broad
absorptions which are consistent with an origin in quickly rotating (v sin i ~
50 km / s) late-type stellar photospheres which are also strongly veiled, r_k =
3 - 4. These observations provide further evidence that: 1)-Class I sources are
highly veiled at near-infrared wavelengths, confirming previous findings of
lower resolution spectroscopic studies; and 2)- flat-spectrum protostars rotate
more rapidly than classical T Tauri stars (Class II sources), supporting
findings from a recent high resolution spectroscopic study of other
flat-spectrum sources in this cloud. In addition our observations are
consistent with the high rotation rates derived for two of the Class I
protostellar objects in our sample from observations of variable hard X-ray
emission obtained with the ASCA satellite. These observations suggest that
certain Class I sources can rotate even more rapidly than flat-spectrum

Steep-Spectrum Radio Emission from the Low-Mass Active Galactic Nucleus GH 10
GH 10 is a broad-lined active galactic nucleus (AGN) energized by a black
hole of mass 800,000 Solar masses. It was the only object detected by Greene et
al. in their Very Large Array (VLA) survey of 19 low-mass AGNs discovered by
Greene & Ho. New VLA imaging at 1.4, 4.9, and 8.5 GHz reveals that GH 10's
emission has an extent of less than 320 pc, has an optically-thin synchrotron
spectrum with a spectral index -0.76+/-0.05, is less than 11 percent linearly
polarized, and is steady - although poorly sampled - on timescales of weeks and
years. Circumnuclear star formation cannot dominate the radio emission, because
the high inferred star formation rate, 18 Solar masses per year, is
inconsistent with the rate of less than 2 Solar masses per year derived from
narrow Halpha and [OII] 3727 emission. Instead, the radio emission must be
mainly energized by the low-mass black hole. GH 10's radio properties match
those of the steep-spectrum cores of Palomar Seyfert galaxies, suggesting that,
like those Seyferts, the emission is outflow-driven. Because GH 10 is radiating
close to its Eddington limit, it may be a local analog of the starting
conditions, or seeds, for supermassive black holes. Future imaging of GH 10 at
higher resolution thus offers an opportunity to study the relative roles of
radiative versus kinetic feedback during black-hole growth.Comment: 7 pages; 2 figures; emulateapj; to appear in Ap
Estimates of rates for dissociative recombination of NO + e via various mechanisms
We estimate rates for the dissociative recombination (DR) of NO +
e. Although accurate excited state potential energy curves for the excited
states of the neutral are not available, we estimate that the 1 {\Phi}
and the 1 {\Pi} states of the neutral may intersect the ground state
cation potential energy surface near its equilibrium geometry. Using fixed
nuclei scattering calculations we estimate the rate for direct DR via these
states and find it to be significant. We also perform approximate calculations
of DR triggered by the indirect mechanism, which suggest that the indirect DR
rate for NO is insignificant compared to the direct rate.Comment: Submitted to Phys Rev
Deflections of beam columns on multiple supports
Lateral deflections of beam columns on multiple equally spaced supports are calculated using the STAGS nonlinear structural analysis computer program. Three lateral loadings are considered, uniform, linear, and uniform over only the center bay. Two types of boundary conditions are considered at the end supports, clamped, and simple support. The effect of an initial sinusoidal imperfection are considered. Deflections in the center and end bays of the beam columns are presented as a function of applied axial compressive load. As the number of bays becomes large, the effect of boundary conditions on the deflections in the center bays diminishes. For cases involving a uniform or linearly varying load, imperfections can have a much larger effect on deflections in the center bays than can lateral pressure
Buckling loads for stiffened panels subjected to combined longitudinal compression and shear loadings: Results obtained with PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer
The shear buckling analyses used in PASCO are summarized. The PASCO analyses include the basic VIPASA analysis, which is essentially exact for longitudinal and transverse loads, and a smeared orthotropic solution which was added to alleviate a shortcoming in the VIPASA analysis. Buckling results are presented for six stiffened panels loaded by combinations of longitudinal compression and shear. The buckling results were obtained with the PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer programs. The EAL and STAGS solutions were obtained with a fine finite element mesh and provide calculations for the entire range of combinations of longitudinal compression and shear loadings
Current research on shear buckling and thermal loads with PASCO: Panel Analysis and Sizing Code
The PASCO computer program to obtain the detailed dimensions of optimum stiffened composite structural panels is described. Design requirements in terms of inequality constraints can be placed on buckling loads or vibration frequencies, lamina stresses and strains, and overall panel stiffness for each of many load conditions. General panel cross sections can be treated. An analysis procedure involving a smeared orthotropic solution was investigated. The conservatism in the VIPASA solution and the danger in a smeared orthotropic solution is explored. PASCO's capability to design for thermal loadings is also described. It is emphasized that design studies illustrate the importance of the multiple load condition capability when thermal loads are present
