    The Lost Generation of Autistic Women’s Experiences of Secondary School: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Approach

    This paper focuses on the “lost generation” of autistic women’s experiences of secondary school using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach. Autistic women were supported through inclusive research practices to share their experiences of secondary school as an unrecognised autistic child, as captured through an online questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The core features of the cohort included a diagnosis of autism post eighteen years old, and attendance at a mainstream secondary school in the United Kingdom. The findings highlight the participants’ difficult experiences, including bullying, difficult relationships with peers, sensory difficulties within their school environment and processing differences within their learning. The findings also showed two areas that positively contributed to their school experiences, including friendships and positive relationships with teachers. Discussions centre on the benefits that autistic adults bring to informing educational enquiry and why the phenomenon of the lost generation of autistic girls is still a current concern

    The existence theorem of ordinary differential equations

    There are a great many devices for solving differential equations of certain special forms. But there is a large number of classes of differential equations that are not included in these special forms and cannot be integrated by quadratures or other purely elementary methods. When mathematicians were forced to abandon their cherished hope of finding a method for expressing the solution of every differential equation in terms of a finite number of known functions or their integrals they turned their attention to the question of whether a differential equation in general had a solution at all, and, if so, of what nature. This study resulted in the development of what is known as the Existence Theorem of Ordinary Differential Equations. This theorem states that for every ordinary differential equation of a fairly general type there exists a solution. The type of equations included in the theorem includes those that are usually encountered and used both in applied and pure mathematics. The theorem is no less important in the field of calculus than is the cardinal proposition in the theory or algebraic equations, that every such equation has a root

    WFMOS - Sounding the Dark Cosmos

    Vast sound waves traveling through the relativistic plasma during the first million years of the universe imprint a preferred scale in the density of matter. We now have the ability to detect this characteristic fingerprint in the clustering of galaxies at various redshifts and use it to measure the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe. The Wide-Field Multi-Object Spectrograph (WFMOS) would use this test to shed significant light on the true nature of dark energy, the mysterious source of this cosmic acceleration. WFMOS would also revolutionise studies of the kinematics of the Milky Way and provide deep insights into the clustering of galaxies at redshifts up to z~4.     Comparison of histomorphology and DNA preservation produced by fixatives in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting

    Histopathology is the most useful tool for diagnosis of a number of diseases, especially cancer. To be effective, histopathology requires that tissues be fixed prior to processing. Formalin is currently the most common histologic fixative, offering many advantages: it is cheap, readily available, and pathologists are routinely trained to examine tissues fixed in formalin. However, formalin fixation substantially degrades tissue DNA, hindering subsequent use in diagnostics and research. We therefore evaluated three alternative fixatives, TissueTek® Xpress® Molecular Fixative, modified methacarn, and PAXgene®, all of which have been proposed as formalin alternatives, to determine their suitability for routine use in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. This was accomplished by examining the histomorphology of sections produced from fixed tissues as well as the ability to amplify fragments from extracted DNA. Tissues were sampled from two dogs and four cats, fixed for 24–48 h, and processed routinely. While all fixatives produced acceptable histomorphology, formalin had significantly better morphologic characteristics than the other three fixatives. Alternative fixatives generally had better DNA amplification than formalin, although results varied somewhat depending on the tissue examined. While no fixative is yet ready to replace formalin, the alternative fixatives examined may be useful as adjuncts to formalin in diagnostic practices

    Atomistic Simulations of the Defect Chemistry and Self-Diffusion of Li-ion in LiAlO2

    Lithium aluminate, LiAlO2, is a material that is presently being considered as a tritium breeder material in fusion reactors and coating material in Li-conducting electrodes. Here, we employ atomistic simulation techniques to show that the lowest energy intrinsic defect process is the cation anti-site defect (1.10 eV per defect). This was followed closely by the lithium Frenkel defect (1.44 eV per defect), which ensures a high lithium content in the material and inclination for lithium diffusion from formation of vacancies. Li self-diffusion is three dimensional and exhibits a curved pathway with a migration barrier of 0.53 eV. We considered a variety of dopants with charges +1 (Na, K and Rb), +2 (Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba), +3 (Ga, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Sc, Y and La) and +4 (Si, Ge, Ti, Zr and Ce) on the Al site. Dopants Mg2+ and Ge4+ can facilitate the formation of Li interstitials and Li vacancies, respectively. Trivalent dopants Fe3+, Ni3+ and Mn3+ prefer to occupy the Al site with exoergic solution energies meaning that they are candidate dopants for the synthesis of Li (Al, M) O2 (M = Fe, Ni and Mn) compounds
