Observational Evidence For Constant Gas Accretion Rate Since z = 5
Star formation rate density (SFRD) has not been constant throughout the
history of the Universe. The rate at which stars form greatly affects the
evolution of the Universe, but the factors which drive SFRD evolution remain
uncertain. There must be sufficient amount of gas to fuel the star formation,
either as a reservoir within a galaxy, or as inflow from the intergalactic
medium (IGM). This work explores how the gas accretion rate onto galaxies over
time has affected star formation rate. We propose a novel method of measuring
cosmic gas accretion rate. This involves comparing the comoving densities of
available Hi and H2 gas and the densities of existing stars at different
redshifts. We constrained gas accretion until z = 5, and we found that the gas
accretion rate density (GARD) is relatively constant in the range from z = 5 to
z = 0. This constancy in the GARD is not reflected by the SFRD, which declines
significantly between z = 1.0 and z = 0. This work suggests that the decline is

Applying search theory to determine the feasibility of eradicating an invasive population in natural environments
The detectability of invasive organisms influences the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a framework for defining and measuring detectability, taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. In this paper, search theory concepts are incorporated into a population model, and the costs of search and control are calculated as functions of the amount of search effort (the decision variable). Simulations are performed on a set of weed scenarios in a natural environment, involving different combinations of plant longevity, seed longevity and plant fecundity. Results provide preliminary estimates of the cost and duration of eradication programs to assist in prioritising weeds for control. Conceptual design of a fixed-pitch wind turbine generator system rated at 400 kilowatts
The design and cost aspects of a fixed pitch, 400 kW Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) concept are presented. Improvements in reliability and cost reductions were achieved with fixed pitch operation and by incorporating recent advances in WTG technology. The specifications for this WTG concept were as follows: (1) A fixed pitch, continuous wooden rotor was to be provided by the Gougeon Bros. Co. (2) An 8 leg hyperboloid tower that showed promise as a low cost structure was to be used. (3) Only commercially available components and parts that could be easily fabricated were to be considered. (4) Design features deemed desirable based on recent NASA research efforts were to be incorporated. Detailed costs and weight estimates were prepared for the second machine and a wind farm of 12 WTG's. The calculated cost of energy for the fixed pitch, twelve unit windfarm is 11.5 cents/kW hr not including the cost of land and access roads. Weed Search and Control: Theory and Application
The detectability of invasive organisms influences the costs and benefits of alternative control strategies, and the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a mathematically rigorous framework for defining and measuring detectability, taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. To demonstrate the application of search theory to invasive species control, invasive species detectability is incorporated into a population simulation model. The model is applied to a base set of parameter values that represent reasonable values for a hypothetical weed. The analysis shows the effects of detectability and search time on the duration of an eradication program. Furthermore, for a given level of detectability and search time, the analysis shows that the variables with the greatest influence on the duration of the eradication effort are search speed, kill efficiency and seed longevity. A series of Monte Carlo simulations are performed on a set of five scenarios, involving different combinations of plant longevity, seed longevity and plant fecundity. Rational methods for the selection of diverse screening compounds.
Traditionally a pursuit of large pharmaceutical companies, high-throughput screening assays are becoming increasingly common within academic and government laboratories. This shift has been instrumental in enabling projects that have not been commercially viable, such as chemical probe discovery and screening against high-risk targets. Once an assay has been prepared and validated, it must be fed with screening compounds. Crafting a successful collection of small molecules for screening poses a significant challenge. An optimized collection will minimize false positives while maximizing hit rates of compounds that are amenable to lead generation and optimization. Without due consideration of the relevant protein targets and the downstream screening assays, compound filtering and selection can fail to explore the great extent of chemical diversity and eschew valuable novelty. Herein, we discuss the different factors to be considered and methods that may be employed when assembling a structurally diverse compound collection for screening. A natural carbohydrate fraction Actigen™ from Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall: effects on goblet cells, gut morphology and performance of broiler chickens
A study was conducted to evaluate a natural carbohydrate fraction Actigen™ (NCF), derived from mannanoligosaccharide, in feed on growth performance, intestinal morphology and goblet cell number and area of male broilers'. Dietary treatments included: 1) control diet (antibiotic and NCF free), 2) NCF at 200g/t, 3) NCF at 400g/t, and 4) NCF 800g/t. Two hundred and forty birds were placed into 12 replicate pens per treatment (5 birds/pen), sixty birds per treatment. Body weight and feed intake were recorded weekly up to day 42. At this time a 2.5cm section of jejunum and duodenum were excised post mortem for morphological analysis. Birds fed 200g/t and 800g/t NCF were significantly (P<0.01) heavier from day 14 onwards than the control birds. Feed intake was significantly higher in birds fed 200g/t NCF compared to those fed the control at 21 and 35 days (P<0.05). Diets containing 200g/t and 800g/t of NCF significantly decreased broiler feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control in the first phase (1-14 days) (P<0.01) and levels of NCF decreased FCR (P<0.05) in the second phase (15-28 days). NCF had no significant effect on villus height, villus width, crypt depth or villus to crypt ratio in either duodenum or jejunum. NCF did not significantly affect goblet cell area or goblet cell number in the duodenum, however, in the jejunum, 800g/t NCF significantly (P<0.05) increased goblet cell area over the control. In conclusion, NCF showed a positive effect on broiler performance in the starter and grower phases, and increased goblet cell area in the jejunum, suggesting higher levels of mucin production. This indicated that the performance benefit of NCF could be age-dependent, with younger birds responding more than the older ones. Skylab S-193 Radscat microwave measurements of sea surface winds
The S-193 Radscat made extensive measurements of many sea conditions. Measurements were taken in a tropical hurricane (Ava), a tropical storm (Christine), and in portions of extratropical cyclones. Approximately 200 scans of ocean data at 105 kilometer spacings were taken during the first two Skylab missions and another 200 during the final mission when the characteristics of the measurements changed due to damage of the antenna. Backscatter with four transmit/receive polarization combinations and emissions with horizontal and vertical receive polarizations were measured. Other surface parameters investigated for correlation with the measurements included sea temperature, air/sea temperature difference, and gravity-wave spectrum. Methods were developed to correct the microwave measurements for atmospheric effects. The radiometric data were corrected accurately for clear sky and light cloud conditions only. The radiometer measurements were used to recover the surface scattering characteristics for all atmospheric conditions excluding rain. The radiometer measurements also detected the presence of rain which signaled when the scattering measurement should not be used for surface wind estimation. Regression analysis was used to determine empirically the relation between surface parameters and the microwave measurements, after correction for atmospheric effects. Results indicate a relationship approaching square-law at 50 deg between differential scattering coefficient and wind speed with horizontally polarized scattering data showing slightly more sensitivity to wind speed than vertically polarized data
Movement-Related Cortical Potential Amplitude Reduction after Cycling Exercise Relates to the Extent of Neuromuscular Fatigue.
Exercise-induced fatigue affects the motor control and the ability to generate a given force or power. Surface electroencephalography allows researchers to investigate movement-related cortical potentials (MRCP), which reflect preparatory brain activity 1.5 s before movement onset. Although the MRCP amplitude appears to increase after repetitive single-joint contractions, the effects of large-muscle group dynamic exercise on such pre-motor potential remain to be described. Sixteen volunteers exercised 30 min at 60% of the maximal aerobic power on a cycle ergometer, followed by a 10-km all-out time trial. Before and after each of these tasks, knee extensor neuromuscular function was investigated using maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) combined with electrical stimulations of the femoral nerve. MRCP was recorded during 60 knee extensions after each neuromuscular sequence. The exercise resulted in a significant decrease in the knee extensor MVC force after the 30-min exercise (-10 ± 8%) and the time trial (-21 ± 9%). The voluntary activation level (VAL; -6 ± 8 and -12 ± 10%), peak twitch (Pt; -21 ± 16 and -32 ± 17%), and paired stimuli (P100 Hz; -7 ± 11 and -12 ± 13%) were also significantly reduced after the 30-min exercise and the time trial. The first exercise was followed by a decrease in the MRCP, mainly above the mean activity measured at electrodes FC1-FC2, whereas the reduction observed after the time trial was related to the FC1-FC2 and C2 electrodes. After both exercises, the reduction in the late MRCP component above FC1-FC2 was significantly correlated with the reduction in P100 Hz (r = 0.61), and the reduction in the same component above C2 was significantly correlated with the reduction in VAL (r = 0.64). In conclusion, large-muscle group exercise induced a reduction in pre-motor potential, which was related to muscle alterations and resulted in the inability to produce a maximal voluntary contraction
Risk assessment of an offshore wind turbine and remaining useful life estimation of the power converter. Improving availability by prioritising failures with higher risk to operation
By 2014, almost 2500 offshore wind turbines were installed in Europe representing 8GW of capacity connected to the grid and, there is a growing market penetration for the next years. Offshore wind farm operators are facing many challenges related to disparate data sources utilisation for O&M logistic optimisation. Therefore, the decision-making process needs to be based on sound analysis of the wind farm information or data available. According to several technical reports operation and maintenance (O&M) cost could reach until 30% of the levelised cost of energy (LCOE). Understanding the reliability of an offshore wind turbine and the resources required to maintain it is crucial to reduce O&M costs and thus, to reduce the levelised cost of energy (LCOE). There is a need to reduce unnecessary tasks, prioritise the most urgent tasks, improve usage of vessels, crew and technicians, reduce the cost of spare parts held and schedule preventative maintenance to minimise downtime and maximise revenue. Currently, risk assessment plays an important role in the operation and maintenance (O&M) strategies of offshore wind farms. A comprehensive failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) has been carried out to determine critical assemblies of a generic offshore wind turbine with an induction generator, three stages gearbox and monopile foundation. The main objectives of undertaking this comprehensive FMEA was to identify those failures with significant impact on the wind turbine operation and to identify or highlight areas of risk for maintainability and availability. The FMEA is validated with; widely-used data available in the public domain; Lloyd’s Register’s experience of working with wind farm operators and; Lloyd’s Register experience of working on reliability of the mechanical system of different industrial sectors for decades. The FMEA is further augmented and updated by the use of on-going measurements from operating wind farms. Yaw system, pitch system, power converter and gearbox have been identified in the FMEA as the most critical assemblies regarding risk to the turbine operation. Power converter analysis shows high failure rates and a large proportion of undetectable failures, therefore maintenance resources have been spent on fault finding with its corresponding cost. New approaches are necessary to tackle electrical or electronic failures, especially on the power converter. To improve overall reliability, a method to estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) of a fully-rated converter in a variable speed wind turbine is proposed using data commonly available for offshore wind farm operators. Studies show that the economic impact is dominated by failures related to power electronic components such as IGBTs and capacitors due to their higher repair cost. Quantum protocols for anonymous voting and surveying
We describe quantum protocols for voting and surveying. A key feature of our
schemes is the use of entangled states to ensure that the votes are anonymous
and to allow the votes to be tallied. The entanglement is distributed over
separated sites; the physical inaccessibility of any one site is sufficient to
guarantee the anonymity of the votes. The security of these protocols with
respect to various kinds of attack is discussed. We also discuss classical
schemes and show that our quantum voting protocol represents a N-fold reduction
