    Diversity of adsorbed hydrogen on the TiC (001) surface at high coverages

    The catalyzed dissociation of molecular hydrogen on the surfaces of diverse materials is currently widely studied due to its importance in a broad range of hydrogenation reactions that convert noxious exhaust products and/or greenhouse gases into added-value greener products such as methanol. In the search for viable replacements for expensive late transition metal catalysts TiC has been increasingly investigated as a potential catalyst for H2 dissociation. Here, we report on a combination of experiments and density functional theory calculations on the well-defined TiC(001) surface revealing that multiple H and H2 species are available on this substrate, with different binding configurations and adsorption energies. Our calculations predict an initial occupancy of H atoms on surface C atom sites, which then enables the subsequent stabilization of H atoms on top of surface Ti atoms. Further H2 can be also molecularly adsorbed over Ti sites. These theoretical predictions are in full accordance with information extracted from X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption experiments. The experimental results show that at high coverages of hydrogen there is a reconstruction of the TiC(001) surface which facilitates the binding of the adsorbate

    Changes in compliance with school-based physical activity recommendations in Spanish youth: The UP&DOWN longitudinal study

    The study aimed (a) to examine changes in physical activity (PA) during the whole day, school hours, recess, and physical education classes (PEC) during a 2-year period in primary and secondary students; (b) to identify changes in the proportion of compliance with specific PA recommendations for these periods; and (c) to examine whether PA levels at baseline are associated with PA levels 2 years later. Eight hundred and fourteen (51.8% boys) children and 658 (50.1% boys) adolescents from 41 Spanish schools participated in the study. Hip-worn accelerometers were used to assess PA during different time periods. Light PA (LPA) declined during the whole day, school hours, recess (all P < 0.001, except child girls for recess), and PEC (all, P < 0.05) in children and adolescents. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) during the whole day and recess declined in child boys (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively) and adolescent boys (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively). MVPA during PEC declined in adolescent boys (P < 0.001) and adolescent girls (all P < 0.05). The proportion of compliance with the specific PA recommendations for these periods declined (P < 0.05), except for PEC in adolescent girls. PA during the whole day at baseline was moderately associated with PA during the whole day years later (ICCs = 0.210-0.544, with one exception), but this association was lower for the school-based PA. In conclusion, time spent in MVPA and LPA during the whole day and recess declined over time in child and adolescent boys and during PEC in adolescents. These findings highlight the need to promote PA interventions in these settings

    Escuela y comunidad: Una experiencia de desarrollo comunitario

    Nuestra comunicación presenta la experiencia que se está desarrollando en dos barrios periféricos con la participación de cuatro centros educativos: dos de educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP) y dos Institutos de Educación Secundaria (IES). Partiendo de la cultura como manifestación social, reflexionamos sobre la cultura escolar y su relación con el fracaso escolar, y analizamos las posibilidades del desarrollo comunitario como vía para afrontarlo. En esta experiencia, el proceso de desarrollo comunitario está en su fase inicial y se ha consolidado la coordinación de los diferentes servicios y recursos públicos y privados que inciden en la zona. El trabajo de prevención y promoción que se está realizando en las calles gracias al proceso “El Patio”, se complementa con la participación de los centros educativos, además del uso comunitario de sus instalaciones. Actualmente estamos realizando un diagnóstico comunitario en el que hemos finalizado la recopilación de datos objetivos y estadísticos así como el proceso de audición para la parte subjetiva. Con la síntesis de estos datos se iniciará un proceso de discusión con toda la población para la búsqueda comunitaria de alternativas

    Low doses of ivermectin cause sensory and locomotor disorders in dung beetles

    Ivermectin is a veterinary pharmaceutical generally used to control the ecto- and endoparasites of livestock, but its use has resulted in adverse effects on coprophilous insects, causing population decline and biodiversity loss. There is currently no information regarding the direct effects of ivermectin on dung beetle physiology and behaviour. Here, based on electroantennography and spontaneous muscle force tests, we show sub-lethal disorders caused by ivermectin in sensory and locomotor systems of Scarabaeus cicatricosus, a key dung beetle species in Mediterranean ecosystems. Our findings show that ivermectin decreases the olfactory and locomotor capacity of dung beetles, preventing them from performing basic biological activities. These effects are observed at concentrations lower than those usually measured in the dung of treated livestock. Taking into account that ivermectin acts on both glutamate-gated and GABA-gated chloride ion channels of nerve and muscle cells, we predict that ivermectin’s effects at the physiological level could influence many members of the dung pat community.     Making city in the "Non-City": the integration of irregular settlements in Andalusia. A case study

    The problems associated with numerous irregular buildings existing in Andalucia today, demands a new approach. In order to deepen the definition of strategies of urbano-territorial integration of these settlements, we present a case study in which, at the end of its implementation in agent-based simulation models, we summarize the ODD Protocol which will form the basis of the simulation, indicating the determining factors to consider for an effective and participatory planning, that minimize the progressive estrangement between the normative framework and the reality that is tried to order.

    Room temperature methane capture and activation by Ni clusters supported on TiC(001): effects of metal-carbide interactions on the cleavage of the C-H bond

    Methane is an extremely stable molecule, a major component of natural gas, and also one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to global warming. Consequently, the capture and activation of methane is a challenging and intensively studied topic. A major research goal is to find systems that can activate methane even at low temperature. Here, combining ultrahigh vacuum catalytic experiments followed by X-ray photoemission spectra and accurate density functional theory (DFT) based calculations, we show that small Ni clusters dispersed on the (001) surface of TiC are able to capture and dissociate methane at room temperature. Our DFT calculations reveal that two-dimensional Ni clusters are responsible of this chemical transformation, evidencing that the lability of the supported clusters appears to be a critical aspect in the strong adsorption of methane. A small energy barrier of 0.18 eV is predicted for CH4 dissociation into adsorbed methyl and hydrogen atom species. In addition, the calculated reaction free energy profile at 300 K and 1 atm of CH4 shows no effective energy barriers in the system. Comparing with other reported systems which activate methane at room temperature, including oxide and zeolite-based materials, indicates that a different chemistry takes place on our metal/carbide system. The discovery of a carbide-based surface able to activate methane at low temperatures paves the road for the design of new types of catalysts towards an efficient conversion of this hydrocarbon into other added-value chemicals, with implications in climate change mitigation

    Validity and reliability of the international fItness scale (IFIS) in preschool children

    Objectives Examine the validity and reliability of parent-reported International FItness Scale (IFIS) in preschoolers. Method A cross-sectional study of 3051 Spanish preschoolers (3-5 years). Fitness was measured by PREFIT battery and reported by parents using an adapted version of the IFIS. Waist circumference was evaluated, and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) was calculated. Seventy-six parents of randomly selected schoolchildren completed the IFIS twice for a reliability assessment. Results ANCOVA, adjusted for sex, age and WHtR, showed that preschoolers who were scored by their parents as having average-to-very good fitness had better levels of measured physical fitness than those preschoolers who were classified as having very poor/poor fitness levels (18.1laps to 22.1laps vs 15.6laps for cardiorespiratory fitness; 6.6 kg to 7.5 kg vs 5.3 kg for muscular fitness-handgrip-; 71.7 cm to 76.4 cm vs 62.0 cm for muscular fitness-standing long jump-; 17.2s to 16.2s vs 18.2s for speed/agility; and 11.2s to 15.6s vs 8.7s for balance; p < 0.001). The weighted kappa for concordance between parent-reported fitness levels and objective assessment was poor (kappa <= 0.18 for all fitness measures). Overall, the mean values of the abdominal adiposity indicators were significantly lower in high-level fitness categories reported by parents than in low-level fitness categories (p < 0.05). The test-retest reliability ranged from 0.46 to 0.62. Conclusions The reliability of the parent-reported IFIS are acceptable, but the concordance between parents reported and objectively measures fitness levels is poor, suggesting that parents' responses may not be able to correctly classify preschoolers according to their fitness level.The PREFIT project takes place thanks to the funding linked to the Ramon y Cajal grant held by Ortega FB (RYC-2011-09011)

    Estudio del mecanismo de eliminación demagnesio de aleaciones Al-Si en estado líquido mediante inyección de minerales base sílice

    RESUMEN Se empleó el método de inyección sumergida de polvos por medio de un gas de arrastre inerte (Ar) con el fin de eliminar el magnesio de la aleación Al-Si A380 a 750 °C. Los polvos inyectados al baño de metal fundido fueron zeolita mineral, arena sílice y mezclas de ambas. Las variables de respuesta medidas fueron el contenido de magnesio en el baño metálico respecto al tiempo de inyección y las mermas de metal al final de cada experimento. En el análisis de resultados, la mezcla sílice:zeolita 66:34 % e.p. obtuvo la mayor eficiencia, lográndose una disminución en el contenido de magnesio en el baño metálico de 1 a 0.0066 % e.p. Los productos de reacción se analizaron por difracción de rayos-X, microscopía electrónica de barrido y de transmisión. Los resultados de estos análisis y el empleo del paquete termodinámico FactSage, versión 6, permitieron justificar el mecanismo de reacción entre los minerales y el aluminio líquido. ABSTRAC In order to eliminate magnesium from an A 380 Al-Si alloy at 750°C, the submerged powder injection method, using an inert carrier gas (Ar), was applied. The injected powders in the liquid aluminum bath were zeolite, silica and mixtures of zeolite-silica minerals. For each experiment the response variables were: eliminated magnesium versus injection time and quantity of drosses produced. Chemical analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry showed that mixtures of silica-zeolite 66:34 wt% have the best results with regarding to the removal magnesium from 1 to 0.0066 wt%. During the elimination of magnesium complex stoichiometry compounds were formed due to the reactions among zeolite, water steam and liquid aluminum. These compounds were analyzed by XRD, SEM and TEM. The results obtained, along with using the FactSage 6 thermodynamic software, allowed to elucidate the reaction mechanism between the minerals used and liquid aluminum
