    A Full-Scale Evaluation of Lightweight Personal Protective Ensembles for Demining in Providing Protection Against Blast-Type Anti-Personnel Mines

    A wide range of equipment, in the form of helmets, vests, aprons and trousers, is currently in use around the world to protect deminers against the effects of AP mines. Significant variations exist in terms of the level of protection afforded, operational usefulness, quality of manufacturing and cost of each of these components. To date, there have been limited studies undertaken to systematically and quantitatively assess the effectiveness of the different protective components applied to both the civilian and military demining theaters. This study summarizes the efforts of numerous full-scale test series carried out in 1999, with particular emphasis on quantifying the protective performance against blast AP mines of selected concepts of humanitarian demining ensembles. It was also possible to assess aspects of the blast and related fragmentation resistance of individual components

    It is well established from numerous documented cases of bomb blasts that, under certain conditions (determined by the amount and proximity of explosive), the transmitted shock wave and associated overpressure generated by the detonation of an explosive device can cause critical and fatal injuries to the thorax, e.g., “blast lung.” As such injuries tend to be internal and thus difficult to detect, there has been considerable debate in recent years on the significance of the blast overpressure injury in the context of demining/mine clearance compared to more visible injuries, such as, amputation of extremities, fragmentation wounds and blindness.     Adherence to Canada's Food Guide Recommendations during Pregnancy:Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health

    Background: In Canada, pregnant women are typically referred to Canada's Food Guide (CFG), a set of national dietary recommendations designed to promote adequate nutrient intake. Pregnant women are also advised to gain weight within the Institute of Medicine guidelines, which differ by prepregnancy body mass index (BMI). However, CFG recommendations do not account for prepregnancy BMI and provide no guidance on "less healthy" (LH) foods. Objective: The aim of this study was to score women's diets according to adherence to CFG recommendations and consumption of LH foods and to examine differences between these diet scores by prepregnancy BMI. Methods: Participants enrolled in the APrON (Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition) prospective cohort study completed a 24-h recall in their second trimester (n = 1630). A score was created on the basis of each daily dietary CFG recommendation met, ranging from 0 to 9. The distribution of consumption (grams per day) of 8 LH food groups was given a score of 0 (none) or 1, 2, or 3 (representing the lowest, middle, or highest tertiles, respectively) and summed giving a total LH score of 0-24. Results: There were few differences in CFG recommendations met by prepregnancy BMI status, although fewer women who were overweight or obese prepregnancy met the specific recommendation to consume 7-8 servings of fruit or vegetables/d than did those who were under- or normal weight (47% and 41% compared with 50% and 54%, respectively). Although differences were small, women who were obese prepregnancy had lower CFG scores (β = -0.28; 95% CI:-0.53, -0.02) and higher LH scores (β = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.86) than did those who were normal weight. Conclusion: The study results suggest that more attention may need to be paid to individualized counseling on dietary recommendations that take account of prepregnancy BMI

    Periodic venting of MABR lumen allows high removal rates and high gas-transfer efficiencies

    The membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is a novel treatment technology that employs gas-supplying membranes to deliver oxygen directly to a biofilm growing on the membrane surface. When operated with closed-end membranes, the MABR provides 100-percent oxygen transfer efficiencies (OTE), resulting in significant energy savings. However, closed-end MABRs are more sensitive to back-diffusion of inert gases, such as nitrogen. Back-diffusion reduces the average oxygen transfer rates (OTR), consequently decreasing the average contaminant removal fluxes (J). We hypothesized that venting the membrane lumen periodically would increase the OTR and J. Using an experimental flow cell and mathematical modeling, we showed that back-diffusion gas profiles developed over relatively long timescales. Thus, very short ventings could re-establish uniform gas profiles for relatively long time periods. Using modeling, we systematically explored the effect of the venting interval (time between ventings). At moderate venting intervals, opening the membrane for 20 s every 30 min, the venting significantly increased the average OTR and J without substantially impacting the OTEs. When the interval was short enough, in this case shorter than 20 min, the OTR was actually higher than for continuous open-end operation. Our results show that periodic venting is a promising strategy to combine the advantages of open-end and closed end operation, maximizing both the OTR and OTE.Primary funding for this work was from Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) project U2R14.     Search algorithms as a framework for the optimization of drug combinations

    Combination therapies are often needed for effective clinical outcomes in the management of complex diseases, but presently they are generally based on empirical clinical experience. Here we suggest a novel application of search algorithms, originally developed for digital communication, modified to optimize combinations of therapeutic interventions. In biological experiments measuring the restoration of the decline with age in heart function and exercise capacity in Drosophila melanogaster, we found that search algorithms correctly identified optimal combinations of four drugs with only one third of the tests performed in a fully factorial search. In experiments identifying combinations of three doses of up to six drugs for selective killing of human cancer cells, search algorithms resulted in a highly significant enrichment of selective combinations compared with random searches. In simulations using a network model of cell death, we found that the search algorithms identified the optimal combinations of 6-9 interventions in 80-90% of tests, compared with 15-30% for an equivalent random search. These findings suggest that modified search algorithms from information theory have the potential to enhance the discovery of novel therapeutic drug combinations.
