STOL aircraft transient ground effects. Part 1: Fundamental analytical study
The first phases of a fundamental analytical study of STOL ground effects were presented. Ground effects were studied in two dimensions to establish the importance of nonlinear effects, to examine transient aspects of ascent and descent near the ground, and to study the modelling of the jet impingement on the ground. Powered lift system effects were treated using the jet-flap analogy. The status of a three-dimensional jet-wing ground effect method was presented. It was shown, for two-dimensional unblown airfoils, that the transient effects are small and are primarily due to airfoil/freestream/ground orientation rather than to unsteady effects. The three-dimensional study showed phenomena similar to the two-dimensional results. For unblown wings, the wing/freestream/ground orientation effects were shown to be of the same order of magnitude as for unblown airfoils. This may be used to study the nonplanar, nonlinear, jet-wing ground effect
Darwin Meets Einstein: LISA Data Analysis Using Genetic Algorithms
This work presents the first application of the method of Genetic Algorithms
(GAs) to data analysis for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In
the low frequency regime of the LISA band there are expected to be tens of
thousands galactic binary systems that will be emitting gravitational waves
detectable by LISA. The challenge of parameter extraction of such a large
number of sources in the LISA data stream requires a search method that can
efficiently explore the large parameter spaces involved. As signals of many of
these sources will overlap, a global search method is desired. GAs represent
such a global search method for parameter extraction of multiple overlapping
sources in the LISA data stream. We find that GAs are able to correctly extract
source parameters for overlapping sources. Several optimizations of a basic GA
are presented with results derived from applications of the GA searches to

To BlikBook or not to BlikBook: Exploring student engagement of an online discussion platform
This paper reports on the use of BlikBook, a course engagement platform for tutors and students that facilitates academic engagement in higher education. Based on a case study where BlikBook was essential to the design and delivery of a large undergraduate module, the paper discusses how the platform opens new avenues for student feedback, and encourages more independence in peer-led student groups. The paper makes several important contributions to knowledge and practice. Firstly, it outlines the process of introducing new software within a university context, and identifies potential pitfalls. Secondly, it offers an assessment of BlikBook that was previously untried in the case study organisation. Thirdly, previous studies have focused primarily on students’ perceptions of online platforms, rather than on the differences in experiences between students and tutors, whereas the present study explores both aspects. Findings suggest that incorporating BlikBook in teaching could improve student engagement
A Solution to the Galactic Foreground Problem for LISA
Low frequency gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer
Space Antenna (LISA), will have to contend with large foregrounds produced by
millions of compact galactic binaries in our galaxy. While these galactic
signals are interesting in their own right, the unresolved component can
obscure other sources. The science yield for the LISA mission can be improved
if the brighter and more isolated foreground sources can be identified and
regressed from the data. Since the signals overlap with one another we are
faced with a ``cocktail party'' problem of picking out individual conversations
in a crowded room. Here we present and implement an end-to-end solution to the
galactic foreground problem that is able to resolve tens of thousands of
sources from across the LISA band. Our algorithm employs a variant of the
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, which we call the Blocked Annealed
Metropolis-Hastings (BAM) algorithm. Following a description of the algorithm
and its implementation, we give several examples ranging from searches for a
single source to searches for hundreds of overlapping sources. Our examples
include data sets from the first round of Mock LISA Data Challenges.Comment: 19 pages, 27 figure
Report on the second Mock LISA Data Challenge
The Mock LISA Data Challenges are a program to demonstrate LISA data-analysis capabilities and to encourage their development. Each round of challenges consists of several data sets containing simulated instrument noise and gravitational-wave sources of undisclosed parameters. Participants are asked to analyze the data sets and report the maximum information about source parameters. The challenges are being released in rounds of increasing complexity and realism: in this proceeding we present the results of Challenge 2, issued in January 2007, which successfully demonstrated the recovery of signals from supermassive black-hole binaries, from ~20,000 overlapping Galactic white-dwarf binaries, and from the extreme-mass-ratio inspirals of compact objects into central galactic black holes
A method for exploratory repeated-measures analysis applied to a breast-cancer screening study
When a model may be fitted separately to each individual statistical unit,
inspection of the point estimates may help the statistician to understand
between-individual variability and to identify possible relationships. However,
some information will be lost in such an approach because estimation
uncertainty is disregarded. We present a comparative method for exploratory
repeated-measures analysis to complement the point estimates that was motivated
by and is demonstrated by analysis of data from the CADET II breast-cancer
screening study. The approach helped to flag up some unusual reader behavior,
to assess differences in performance, and to identify potential random-effects

Differential Binding of Co(II) and Zn(II) to Metallo-β-Lactamase Bla2 from \u3cem\u3eBacillus anthracis\u3c/em\u3e
In an effort to probe the structure, mechanism, and biochemical properties of metallo-β-lactamase Bla2 from Bacillus anthracis, the enzyme was overexpressed, purified, and characterized. Metal analyses demonstrated that recombinant Bla2 tightly binds 1 equiv of Zn(II). Steady-state kinetic studies showed that mono-Zn(II) Bla2 (1Zn-Bla2) is active, while di-Zn(II) Bla2 (ZnZn-Bla2) was unstable. Catalytically, 1Zn-Bla2 behaves like the related enzymes CcrA and L1. In contrast, di-Co(II) Bla2 (CoCo-Bla2) is substantially more active than the mono-Co(II) analogue. Rapid kinetics and UV−vis, 1H NMR, EPR, and EXAFS spectroscopic studies show that Co(II) binding to Bla2 is distributed, while EXAFS shows that Zn(II) binding is sequential. To our knowledge, this is the first documented example of a Zn enzyme that binds Co(II) and Zn(II) via distinct mechanisms, underscoring the need to demonstrate transferability when extrapolating results on Co(II)-substituted proteins to the native Zn(II)-containing forms
Factors Associated with Asthma Self-Management in African American Adolescents
Few studies have focused on asthma self-management in African American adolescents, a group with high rates of the disease. This study examined factors associated with asthma self-management in 133 African Americans aged 14-16 years including gender, asthma impairment, prior asthma education, cognitive and emotional illness representations. Twenty-five percent of the variance in asthma self-management was explained by having attended an asthma education program, perceiving more asthma consequences (illness consequences), and reporting greater understanding of asthma as an illness (illness coherence). Findings suggest that these variables may be important targets of interventions to improve asthma self-management in African American middle adolescents
