More on the Narrowing of Impact Broadened Radio Recombination Lines at High Principal Quantum Number
Recently Alexander and Gulyaev have suggested that the apparent decrease in
impact broadening of radio recombination lines seen at high principal quantum
number n may be a product of the data reduction process, possibly resulting
from the presence of noise on the telescope spectra that is not present on the
calculated comparison spectra. This is an interesting proposal. However, there
are serious problems with their analysis that need to be pointed out. Perhaps
the most important of these is the fact that for principal quantum numbers
below n = 200, where the widths are not in question, their processed generated
profile widths do not fit the widths of the processed lines obtained at the
telescope. After processing, the halfwidths of the generated and telescope
profiles must agree below n = 200 if we are to believe that the processed
generated linewidths above n = 200 are meaningful. Theirs do not. Furthermore,
we find that after applying the linewidth reduction factors found by Alexander
and Gulyaev for their noise added profiles to our generated profiles to
simulate their noise adding effect, the processed widths we obtain still do not
come close to explaining the narrowing seen in the telescope lines for n values
in the range 200 < n < 250. It is concluded that what is needed to solve this
mystery is a completely new approach using a different observing technique
instead of simply a further manipulation of the frequency-switched data.Comment: Six pages with 4 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics

Prevalence of incidental breast cancer and precursor lesions in autopsy studies: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Background Autopsy studies demonstrate the prevalence pool of incidental breast cancer in the population, but estimates are uncertain due to small numbers in any primary study. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of autopsy studies to estimate the prevalence of incidental breast cancer and precursors. Methods Relevant articles were identified through searching PubMed and Embase from inception up to April 2016, and backward and forward citations. We included autopsy studies of women with no history of breast pathology, which included systematic histological examination of at least one breast, and which allowed calculation of the prevalence of incidental breast cancer or precursor lesions. Data were pooled using logistic regression models with random intercepts (non-linear mixed models). Results We included 13 studies from 1948 to 2010, contributing 2363 autopsies with 99 cases of incidental cancer or precursor lesions. More thorough histological examination (≥20 histological sections) was a strong predictor of incidental in-situ cancer and atypical hyperplasia (OR = 126·8 and 21·3 respectively, p < 0·001), but not invasive cancer (OR = 1·1, p = 0·75). The estimated mean prevalence of incidental cancer or precursor lesion was 19·5% (0·85% invasive cancer + 8·9% in-situ cancer + 9·8% atypical hyperplasia). Conclusion Our systematic review in ten countries over six decades found that incidental detection of cancer in situ and breast cancer precursors is common in women not known to have breast disease during life. The large prevalence pool of undetected cancer in-situ and atypical hyperplasia in these autopsy studies suggests screening programs should be cautious about introducing more sensitive tests that may increase detection of these lesions
Sensitive Observations of Radio Recombination Lines in Orion and W51: The Data and Detection of Systematic Recombination Line Blueshifts Proportional to Impact Broadening
Sensitive spectral observations made in two frequency bands near 6.0 and 17.6
GHz are described for Orion and W51. Using frequency switching we were able to
achieve a dynamic range in excess of 10,000 without fitting sinusoidal or
polynomial baselines. This enabled us to detect lines as weak as T\Delta n$ as
high as 25 have been detected in Orion. In the Orion data, where the lines are
stronger, we have also detected a systematic shift in the line center
frequencies proportional to linewidth that cannot be explained by normal

Determination of energy barrier profiles for high-k dielectric materials utilizing bias-dependent internal photoemission
We utilize bias-dependent internal photoemission spectroscopy to determine the metal/dielectric/silicon energy barrier profiles for Au/HfO2/Si and Au/Al2O3/Si structures. The results indicate that the applied voltage plays a large role in determining the effective barrier height and we attribute much of the variation in this case to image potential barrier lowering in measurements of single layers. By measuring current at both positive and negative voltages, we are able to measure the band offsets from Si and also to determine the flatband voltage and the barrier asymmetry at 0 V. Our SiO2 calibration sample yielded a conduction band offset value of 3.03+/-0.1 eV. Measurements on HfO2 give a conduction band offset value of 2.7+/-0.2 eV (at 1.0 V) and Al2O3 gives an offset of 3.3+/-0.1 (at 1.0 V). We believe that interfacial SiO2 layers may dominate the electron transport from silicon for these films. The Au/HfO2 barrier height was found to be 3.6+/-0.1 eV while the Au/Al2O3 barrier is 3.5+/-0.1 eV
Experimental demonstration of coupled optical springs
Optical rigidity will play an important role in improving the sensitivity of future generations of gravitational wave (GW) interferometers, which employ high laser power in order to reach and exceed the standard quantum limit. Several experiments have demonstrated the combined effect of two optical springs on a single system for very low-weight mirror masses or membranes. In this paper we investigate the complex interactions between multiple optical springs and the surrounding apparatus in a system of comparable dynamics to a large-scale GW detector. Using three 100 g mirrors to form a coupled cavity system capable of sustaining two or more optical springs, we demonstrate a number of different regimes of opto-mechanical rigidity and measurement techniques. Our measurements reveal couplings between each optical spring and the control loops that can affect both the achievable increase in sensitivity and the stability of the system. Hence this work establishes a better understanding of the realisation of these techniques and paves the way to their application in future GW observatories, such as upgrades to Advanced LIGO
Analysis of leaf surfaces using scanning ion conductance microscopy
Leaf surfaces are highly complex functional systems with well defined chemistry and structure dictating the barrier and transport properties of the leaf cuticle. It is a significant imaging challenge to analyse the very thin and often complex wax-like leaf cuticle morphology in their natural state. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and to a lesser extent Atomic force microscopy are techniques that have been used to study the leaf surface but their remains information that is difficult to obtain via these approaches. SEM is able to produce highly detailed and high-resolution images needed to study leaf structures at the submicron level. It typically operates in a vacuum or low pressure environment and as a consequence is generally unable to deal with the in situ analysis of dynamic surface events at submicron scales. Atomic force microscopy also possess the high-resolution imaging required and can follow dynamic events in ambient and liquid environments, but can over exaggerate small features and cannot image most leaf surfaces due to their inherent roughness at the micron scale. Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), which operates in a liquid environment, provides a potential complementary analytical approach able to address these issues and which is yet to be explored for studying leaf surfaces. Here we illustrate the potential of SICM on various leaf surfaces and compare the data to SEM and atomic force microscopy images on the same samples. In achieving successful imaging we also show that SICM can be used to study the wetting of hydrophobic surfaces in situ. This has potentially wider implications than the study of leaves alone as surface wetting phenomena are important in a range of fundamental and applied studies
Effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid/vitamin E (PUFA/tocopherol) ratio on antioxidant defence mechanisms of juvenile gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L., Osteichthyes, Sparidae)
Lipid peroxidation, specifically polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) oxidation is highly deleterious, resulting in damage to cellular biomembranes, and may be a principal cause of several diseases in fish including jaundice and nutritional muscular dystrophy. Tissue lipid PUFA content and composition are critical factors in lipid peroxidation, as is the level of endogenous antioxidant molecules such as vitamin E. The primary objective of the present study was the characterization of antioxidant systems in a cultured juvenile marine fish, gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) with the underlying aim to understand how to avoid oxidation problems that may cause pathologies and disease and so to enhance growth and quality of early ongrowing stages. Juvenile sea bream were fed diets having either high or low levels of fish oil and supplemented or basal levels of vitamin E with PUFA/vitamin E ratios ranging from 117 ± 12 in the diet with low PUFA supplemented with vitamin E to 745 ± 48 in the diet with high PUFA with no additional vitamin E. None of the diets had serious deliterious effects on growth or survival of the fish, but the different dietary regimes were effective in significantly altering the PUFA/vitamin E ratios in the fish livers with values ranging from 5.7 ± 0.4 in fish fed the diet with low PUFA supplemented with vitamin E to 91.1 ± 13.2 in fish fed the diet with high PUFA with no additional vitamin E. This had effects on the peroxidation status of the fish as indicated by the significantly altered levels of in vivo lipid peroxidation products measured in liver, with fish fed the diet rich in PUFA and low in vitamin E showing significantly higher values of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and isoprostanes. The isoprostane levels generally followed the same pattern as the TBARS levels supporting its value as an indicator of in vivo oxidative stress in fish, as it is in mammals. However, few significant effects on antioxidant enzyme activities were observed suggesting that more severe conditions may be required to affect these activities such as increasing the PUFA/vitamin E ratio or by increasing peroxidative stress through the feeding of oxidized oils
Effects of partial substitution of dietary fish oil with blends of vegetable oils, on blood leukocyte fatty acid compositions, immune function and histology in European sea bass, (Dicentrarchus labrax L.)
Within a decade or so insufficient fish oil (FO) will be available to meet the requirements for aquaculture growth. Consequently, alternative sources are being investigated to reduce reliance on wild fish as a source of FO. Vegetable oils (VO) are a feasible alternative to FO. However, it is important to establish that alternative dietary lipids are not only supplied in the correct quantities and balance for optimal growth, but can maintain immune function and prevent infection, since it is known that the nutritional state of the fish can influence their immune function and disease resistance. A way of maintaining immune function, while replacing dietary FO, is by using a blend of VOs rather than a single oil. In this study, juvenile European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, were fed diets with a 60 % substitution of FO with a blend of rapeseed (RO), linseed (LO) and palm oils (PO). Two oil blends were used to achieve a fatty acid composition similar to FO, in terms of energy content and provide a similar balance of saturates, monounsaturates and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fish were fed the diets for 64 weeks, after which time growth and fatty acid compositions of liver and blood leukocytes were monitored. The impact of the dietary blends on selected innate immune responses and histopathology were also assessed, together with levels of plasma prostaglandin E2. The results suggest that potential exists for replacing FO with a VO blend farmed sea bass feeds without compromising growth, non-specific immune function or histology
Star-Forming or Starbursting? The Ultraviolet Conundrum
Compared to starburst galaxies, normal star forming galaxies have been shown
to display a much larger dispersion of the dust attenuation at fixed reddening
through studies of the IRX-beta diagram (the IR/UV ratio "IRX" versus the UV
color "beta"). To investigate the causes of this larger dispersion and attempt
to isolate second parameters, we have used GALEX UV, ground-based optical, and
Spitzer infrared imaging of 8 nearby galaxies, and examined the properties of
individual UV and 24 micron selected star forming regions. We concentrated on
star-forming regions, in order to isolate simpler star formation histories than
those that characterize whole galaxies. We find that 1) the dispersion is not
correlated with the mean age of the stellar populations, 2) a range of dust
geometries and dust extinction curves are the most likely causes for the
observed dispersion in the IRX-beta diagram 3) together with some potential
dilution of the most recent star-forming population by older unrelated bursts,
at least in the case of star-forming regions within galaxies, 4) we also
recover some general characteristics of the regions, including a tight positive
correlation between the amount of dust attenuation and the metal content.
Although generalizing our results to whole galaxies may not be immediate, the
possibility of a range of dust extinction laws and geometries should be

Zeolite-Catalyzed Isobutene Amination: Mechanism and Kinetics
Amination of isobutene with NH was investigated over Brønsted acidic zeolites at 1 atm and 453-483 K. To compare catalytic activities over different zeolites, the measured reaction rates are normalized by the number of active sites determined by tert-butylamine temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). Small- A nd medium-pore zeolites with one-dimensional channels exhibit low activity because of pore blockage by adsorbed tert-butylammonium ions. However, turnover frequencies and activation energies are not sensitive to framework identity, as long as the active site is accessible to isobutene and tert-butylamine. Kinetic measurements and FTIR spectroscopy reveal that the Brønsted acid sites in MFI are covered predominantly with tert-butylammonium ions under reaction conditions. The desorption of tert-butylamine is assisted by the concurrent adsorption of isobutene. DFT simulations show that at very low tert-butylamine partial pressures, for example, at the inlet to the reactor, tert-butylamine desorption is rate-limiting. However, at sufficiently high tert-butylamine partial pressures (>0.03 kPa), protonation of isobutene to the corresponding carbenium ion limits the rate of amination.
