    Inhomogeneous Fixed Point Ensembles Revisited

The density of states of disordered systems in the Wigner-Dyson classes approaches some finite non-zero value at the mobility edge, whereas the density of states in systems of the chiral and Bogolubov-de Gennes classes shows a divergent or vanishing behavior in the band centre. Such types of behavior were classified as homogeneous and inhomogeneous fixed point ensembles within a real-space renormalization group approach. For the latter ensembles the scaling law μ=dν1\mu=d\nu-1 was derived for the power laws of the density of states ρEμ\rho\propto|E|^\mu and of the localization length ξEν\xi\propto|E|^{-\nu}. This prediction from 1976 is checked against explicit results obtained meanwhile.Comment: Submitted to 'World Scientific' for the volume 'Fifty Years of Anderson Localization'. 12 page

Quasispecies evolution in general mean-field landscapes

I consider a class of fitness landscapes, in which the fitness is a function of a finite number of phenotypic "traits", which are themselves linear functions of the genotype. I show that the stationary trait distribution in such a landscape can be explicitly evaluated in a suitably defined "thermodynamic limit", which is a combination of infinite-genome and strong selection limits. These considerations can be applied in particular to identify relevant features of the evolution of promoter binding sites, in spite of the shortness of the corresponding sequences.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Europhysics Letters style (included) Finite-size scaling analysis sketched. Rotordynamic Forces on Centrifugal Pump Impellers

    Get PDF
The asymmetric flow around an impeller in a volute exerts a force upon the impeller. To study the rotordynamic force on an impeller which is vibrating around its machine axis of rotation, the impeller, mounted on a dynamometer, is made to whirl in a circular orbit within the volute. The measured force is expressed as the sum of a steady radial force and an unsteady force due to the eccentric motion of the impeller. These forces were measured in separate tests on a centrifugal pump with radically increased shroud clearance, a two-dimensional impeller, and an impeller with an inducer, the impeller of the HPOTP (High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump) of the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Enginer). In each case, a destabilizing force was observed over a region of positive whirl

Local density of states for the corner geometry interface of d-wave superconductors, within the extended Hubbard model

The spatial variations of the order parameter, and the local density of states (LDOS) on the corner of s-wave or dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors, as well as in superconductor-insulator-normal metal interfaces, are calculated self consistently using the Bogoliubov-deGennes formalism within the two dimensional extended Hubbard model. The exact diagonalization method is used. Due to the suppression of the dominant d-wave order parameter, the extended s-wave order parameter is induced near the surface, that alternates its sign for the topmost sites at adjacent edges of the lattice and decays to zero in the bulk. The presence of surface roughness results into the appearance of the zero band conduction peak (ZBCP) near the corner surface which lacks from the predictions of the quasiclassical theory.Comment: 13 pages with 17 figure

Influence of the passive region on Zero Field Steps for window Josephson junctions

We present a numerical and analytic study of the influence of the passive region on fluxon dynamics in a window junction. We examine the effect of the extension of the passive region and its electromagnetic characteristics, its surface inductance and capacitance. When the velocity in the passive region vIv_{I} is equal to the Swihart velocity (1) a one dimensional model describes well the operation of the device. When vIv_{I} is different from 1, the fluxon adapts its velocity to vIv_{I}. In both cases we give simple formulas for the position of the limiting voltage of the zero field steps. Large values of inductance and capacitance lead to different types of solutions which are analyzed.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure

Correlation and response in the Backgammon model: the Ehrenfest legacy

We pursue our investigation of the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Backgammon model, a dynamical urn model which exhibits aging and glassy behavior at low temperature. We present an analytical study of the scaling behavior of the local correlation and response functions of the density fluctuations of the model, and of the associated fluctuation- dissipation ratios, throughout the alpha regime of low temperatures and long times. This analysis includes the aging regime, the convergence to equilibrium, sand the crossover behavior between them.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Journal of Physics

Chandra and HST Confirmation of the Luminous and Variable X-ray Source IC 10 X-1 as a Possible Wolf-Rayet, Black-Hole Binary

We present a Chandra and HST study of IC 10 X-1, the most luminous X-ray binary in the closest starburst galaxy to the Milky Way. Our new hard X-ray observation of X-1 confirms that it has an average 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 1.5e38 erg/s, is strongly variable (a factor of ~2 in >3 ks), and is spatially coincident (within 0.'23 +/-0.'30) with the Wolf-Rayet (WR) star [MAC92] 17A in IC 10. The spectrum of X-1 is best fit by a power law with photon index of ~1.8 and a thermal plasma with kT~1.5 keV, although systematic residuals hint at further complexity. Taken together, these facts suggest that X-1 may be a black hole belonging to the rare class of WR binaries; it is comparable in many ways to Cyg X-3. The Chandra observation also finds evidence for extended X-ray emission co-spatial with the large non-thermal radio superbubble surrounding X-1.Comment: ApJL in press (Oct 2003), 4 pages, 4 figures (w/ fig1 at severely reduced quality), latest emulateapj.cls use

Hamiltonian formulation of nonAbelian noncommutative gauge theories

    Get PDF
We implement the Hamiltonian treatment of a nonAbelian noncommutative gauge theory, considering with some detail the algebraic structure of the noncommutative symmetry group. The first class constraints and Hamiltonian are obtained and their algebra derived, as well as the form of the gauge invariance they impose on the first order action.Comment: enlarged version, 7 pages, RevTe

A Numerical Study of Ultrametricity in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

We use a constrained Monte Carlo technique to analyze ultrametric features of a 4 dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass with quenched couplings J=\pm 1. We find that in the large volume limit an ultrametric structure emerges quite clearly in the overlap of typical equilibrium configurations.Comment: 8 one column pages, latex, 4 figures with epsfig.st
