Cavity QED with Multiple Hyperfine Levels
We calculate the weak-driving transmission of a linearly polarized cavity
mode strongly coupled to the D2 transition of a single Cesium atom. Results are
relevant to future experiments with microtoroid cavities, where the
single-photon Rabi frequency g exceeds the excited-state hyperfine splittings,
and photonic bandgap resonators, where g is greater than both the excited- and
ground-state splitting.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figure

The Exhibitions of the Femmes Artistes Modernes (FAM), Paris, 1931-38
The Société des Femmes Artistes Modernes (FAM) opened up a productive space for women artists who were active in Paris during the 1930s through annual multigenerational exhibitions and international collaborations. I argue that FAM embodied a paradox: on the one hand, it supported artists wishing to question stereotypes of gender, race, class, and nation; on the other, its institutional structure and leadership did not challenge patriarchal assumptions about women’s subordinate role in society. The paper explores this tension by comparing the work and critical reception of several artists in the group who represented the theme of motherhood
Lipolysis: more than just a lipase
Successful adaptation to starvation in mammals depends heavily on the regulated mobilization of fatty acids from triacylglycerols stored in adipose tissue. Although it has long been recognized that cyclic AMP represents the critical second messenger and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL)* the rate-determining enzyme for lipolysis, simple activation of the enzyme has failed to account for the robust augmentation of fatty release in response to physiological agonists. In this issue, Sztalryd et al. (2003) provide convincing support to the notion that the subcellular compartmentalization of lipase also regulates lipolysis, and, more importantly, that proteins other than HSL are localized to the lipid droplet and are indispensable for its optimal hydrolysis
Looking for BRPF1 Presence in Differentiating Osteoclast Cells
Through this semester-long experiment, professor Birnbaum and I attempted to identify the presence of BRPF1 (Bromodomain And PHD Finger Containing 1) in harvested RAW osteoclast cells. This was done through a series of steps, beginning with growing RAW osteoclasts, differentiating them, harvesting them and finally running a Western Blot test to look for our target protein. Unfortunately, no major discoveries were made with this project, but there is still reason to be optimistic about the presence of other members of the BRPF family (BRPF3, BRPF4). With some knowledge on our procedure, future researchers should be able to note specific points that could be tweaked for improvement to yield better results
Of Mice and Men: Not ExAKTly the Same?
The serine-threonine protein kinase Akt2, also known as PKBβ, has been shown to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism in animal models. In a recent study published in Science, Hussain et al. (2011) report that in human subjects an activating mutation of Akt2 leads to hypoglycemia and, unexpectedly, asymmetric overgrowth
Cavity QED with Single Atoms and Photons
Recent experimental advances in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) have opened new possibilities for control of atom-photon interactions. A laser with "one and the same atom" demonstrates the theory of laser operation pressed to its conceptual limit. The generation of single photons on demand and the realization of cavity QED with well defined atomic numbers N = 0, 1, 2,... both represent important steps toward realizing diverse protocols in quantum information science. Coherent manipulation of the atomic state via Raman transitions provides a new tool in cavity QED for in situ monitoring and control of the atom-cavity system. All of these achievements share a common point of departure: the regime of strong coupling. It is thus interesting to consider briefly the history of the strong coupling criterion in cavity QED and to trace out the path that research has taken in the pursuit of this goal
