Genetic Divergence for the Amphibian Pleurodeles waltl in Southwest Portugal: Dispersal Barriers Shaping Geographic Patterns
Dispersal and vicariance are the principal mechanisms responsible for the formation of biogeographic patterns, driven or maintained by the role of past and current barriers to dispersal. Southwest Portugal harbors a rich endemic fauna and flora where strongly differentiated taxa can be observed, suggesting ancient isolating mechanisms acted in this region. In this study, we used information from two partial mitochondrial sequences, combined with information from microsatellite loci and amplification success, to investigate biogeographic patterns of genetic divergence in populations of Pleurodeles waltl in Portugal. Our results demonstrate genetic differentiation at different time frames creating distinct populations in southwest Portugal, which might have arisen following isolation by a large river estuary and mountainous barriers. Effective conservation requires a step change in the way practitioners can contribute to science and

High-Performance Transactional Event Processing
Abstract. This paper presents a transactional framework for low-latency, high-performance, concurrent event processing in Java. At the heart of our framework lies Reflexes, a restricted programming model for highly responsive systems. A Reflex task is an event processor that can run at a higher priority and preempt any other Java thread, including the garbage collector. It runs in an obstruction-free manner with time-oblivious code. We extend Reflexes with a publish/subscribe communication system, itself based on an optimistic transactional event processing scheme, that provides efficient coordination between time-critical, low-latency tasks.We report on the comparison with a commercial JVM, and show that it is possible for tasks to achieve 50 µs response times with way less than 1% of the executions failing to meet their deadlines.
Arguing about causes in law: a semi-formal framework for causal arguments
In legal argumentation and liability attribution, disputes over causes play a central role. Legal discussions about causation often have difficulty with cause-in-fact in complex situations, e.g. overdetermination, preemption, omission. We first assess three theories of causation. Then we introduce a semi-formal framework to model causal arguments using both strict and defeasible rules. We apply the framework to the Althen vaccine injury case. Wrapping up the paper, we motivate a causal argumentation framework and propose to integrate current theories of causation
The Possibility Principle And The Truthmakers For Modal Truths
A necessary part of David Armstrong’s account of truthmakers for modal truths is his Possibility principle: any truthmaker for a contingent truth is also a truthmaker for the possibility of the complement of that contingent truth (if T makes p true and p is contingent, then T makes }*p true). I criticize Armstrong’s Possibility principle for two reasons. First, his argument for the Possibility principle both relies on an unwarranted generalization and vitiates his desire for relevant truthmakers. His argument undercuts relevant truthmakers by entailing that each contingent being is a truthmaker for all modal truths. Second, even if the argument seems successful, the Possibility principle is subject to counterexamples. Armstrong’s being composed of more than fifty atoms makes it true that something composed of more than fifty atoms exists and that truth is contingent, but his being composed of more than fifty atoms does not make it true that it is possible that it is not the case that something composed of more than fifty atoms exists
