    The Perils of Pandemic Exceptionalism

    In response to the pandemic, most states have enacted special measures to protect national economies and public health. Many of these measures would likely violate trade and investment disciplines unless they qualify for one of several exceptions. This Essay examines the structural implications of widespread anticipated defenses premised on the idea of “exceptionalism.” It argues that the pandemic reveals the structural weakness of the exceptions-oriented paradigm of justification in international economic law

    Nonferrous waste foundry sand and milling fly ash as alternative low mechanical strength materials for construction industry: effect on mortars at early ages

    An alternative solution to reduce environmental pollution using aluminum waste foundry sand (AWFS) and fly ash (FA) to produce sustainable construction materials was studied. New mortars were prepared by partially replacing ordinary Portland cement with fly ash at 5, 10 and 15 % mass. and a total replace of Ottawa sand (OS) with AWFS. The specimens were cured at 25°C with a 100% relative humidity. The mechanical behavior was evaluated by compression test at the ages of 7, 14 and 28 days. The microstructural characteristics were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the addition of milling fly ash in AWFS mortars increases the mechanical resistance, mostly at 5% mass reaching the maximum value of 10 MPa at 28 days of age. Microstructurally, it was found a porous cement matrix with some cracking caused by the reaction of portland cement with the metallic aluminum remaining in the waste sand, which is correlated to the low mechanical resistance obtained. The final mechanical characteristic makes this new product a serious candidate to be used as a sustainable building material working at low load

    Os sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) representam uma alternativa agroecolĂłgica de produção, sob regime sustentĂĄvel, para os agricultores familiares na vĂĄrzea dos Rios SolimĂ”es/Amazonas, principalmente no que se refere ao manejo florestal, Ă  diversidade de produtos e Ă  geração de renda. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender as diferentes formas de apropriação e de manejo dos recursos naturais atravĂ©s dos SAFs, nos subsistemas roça, sĂ­tio e lagos, como componente para a sustentabilidade dos agricultores familiares da localidade Costa da Terra Nova, municĂ­pio do Careiro da VĂĄrzea, Amazonas. O mĂ©todo empregado foi o Estudo de Caso com aplicação de questionĂĄrios, entrevistas e observação participante. A produção familiar na Costa da Terra Nova Ă© representada pelos SAFs, constituĂ­do pelos os subsistemas: roça quintal e lago, que proporcionam produtos tanto para subsistĂȘncia quanto para comercialização local, e estabelecendo a agricultura como fundamental atividade na localidade. O principal produto para comercialização Ă© obtido das hortaliças cultivadas na Ă©poca da vazante no subsistema roça nas comunidades SĂŁo Francisco e Nossa Senhora da Conceição; e do extrativismo pesqueiro no subsistema lago, na Ă©poca da cheia, principalmente na comunidade SĂŁo JosĂ©. A criação de animal se dĂĄ no subsistema sĂ­tio e Ă© apenas para subsistĂȘncia, sendo as aves e os suĂ­nos os principais animais domĂ©sticos criados nas trĂȘs comunidades.     1989 as a mimetic revolution: Russia and the challenge of post-communism

    Various terms have been used to describe the momentous events of 1989, including JĂŒrgen Habermas’s ‘rectifying revolution,’ and my own notion of 1989 as a type of ‘anti-revolution’: repudiating not only what had come before, but also denying the political logic of communist power, as well as the emancipatory potential of revolutionary socialism in its entirety. In the event, while the negative agenda of 1989 has been fulfilled, it failed in the end to transcend the political logic of the systems that collapsed at that time. This paper explores the unfulfilled potential of 1989. Finally, 1989 became more of a counter- rather than an anti-revolution, replicating in an inverted form the practices of the mature state socialist regimes. The paucity of institutional and intellectual innovation arising from 1989 is striking. The dominant motif was ‘returnism,’ the attempt to join an established enterprise rather than transforming it. Thus, 1989 can be seen as mimetic revolution, in the sense that it emulated systems that were not organically developed in the societies in which they were implanted. For Eastern Europe ‘returning’ to Europe appeared natural, but for Russia the civilizational challenge of post-communism was of an entirely different order. There could be no return, and instead of a linear transition outlined by the classic transitological literature, Russia’s post-communism demonstrated that the history of others could not be mechanically transplanted from one society to another

    Season of birth, clinical manifestations and Dexamethasone Suppression Test in unipolar major depression

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reports in the literature suggest that the season of birth might constitute a risk factor for the development of a major psychiatric disorder, possibly because of the effect environmental factors have during the second trimester of gestation. The aim of the current paper was to study the possible relationship of the season of birth and current clinical symptoms in unipolar major depression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study sample included 45 DSM-IV major depressive patients and 90 matched controls. The SCAN v. 2.0, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS) were used to assess symptomatology, and the 1 mg Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) was used to subcategorize patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Depressed patients as a whole did not show differences in birth season from controls. However, those patients born during the spring manifested higher HDRS while those born during the summer manifested the lowest HAS scores. DST non-suppressors were almost exclusively (90%) likely to be born during autumn and winter. No effect from the season of birth was found concerning the current severity of suicidal ideation or attempts.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The current study is the first in this area of research using modern and rigid diagnostic methodology and a biological marker (DST) to categorize patients. Its disadvantages are the lack of data concerning DST in controls and a relatively small size of patient sample. The results confirm the effect of seasonality of birth on patients suffering from specific types of depression.</p

    Thermostable Direct Hemolysin Downregulates Human Colon Carcinoma Cell Proliferation with the Involvement of E-Cadherin, and ÎČ-Catenin/Tcf-4 Signaling

    BACKGROUND: Colon cancers are the frequent causes of cancer mortality worldwide. Recently bacterial toxins have received marked attention as promising approaches in the treatment of colon cancer. Thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) secreted by Vibrio parahaemolyticus causes influx of extracellular calcium with the subsequent rise in intracellular calcium level in intestinal epithelial cells and it is known that calcium has antiproliferative activity against colon cancer. KEY RESULTS: In the present study it has been shown that TDH, a well-known traditional virulent factor inhibits proliferation of human colon carcinoma cells through the involvement of CaSR in its mechanism. TDH treatment does not induce DNA fragmentation, nor causes the release of lactate dehydrogenase. Therefore, apoptosis and cytotoxicity are not contributing to the TDH-mediated reduction of proliferation rate, and hence the reduction appears to be caused by decrease in cell proliferation. The elevation of E-cadherin, a cell adhesion molecule and suppression of ÎČ-catenin, a proto-oncogene have been observed in presence of CaSR agonists whereas reverse effect has been seen in presence of CaSR antagonist as well as si-RNA in TDH treated cells. TDH also triggers a significant reduction of Cyclin-D and cdk2, two important cell cycle regulatory proteins along with an up regulation of cell cycle inhibitory protein p27(Kip1) in presence of CaSR agonists. CONCLUSION: Therefore TDH can downregulate colonic carcinoma cell proliferation and involves CaSR in its mechanism of action. The downregulation occurs mainly through the involvement of E-cadherin-ÎČ-catenin mediated pathway and the inhibition of cell cycle regulators as well as upregulation of cell cycle inhibitors

    Assessing ecotoxicity of an innovative bio-based mulch film: a multi-environmental and multi-bioassay approach

    Among the highly diverse range of biobased polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) received vast attention in recent years due to its versatility for different applications and being the first commercially used polymer produced from renewable sources. Production and application of bio-based, biodegradable plastics will have one of the most crucial roles in tackling worldwide plastic pollution. Methods: This study is based on integrative ecotoxicological assessment of an innovative PLA-based agricultural mulch film (BPE-AMF-PLA), developed under the H2020 EU project “BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE”, towards organisms from different environmental compartments (soil, fresh water and marine) and from different trophic levels. Such comprehensive evaluation has an overarching goal to promote environmentally safe and sustainable use of these PLA-based plastics for agricultural and other potential applications. Results: Low-to-no phytotoxicity was obtained in both single-species standardized bioassays, and in a multi-species microcosms experiment. Earthworm reproduction was negatively affected at the lowest test concentration of 0.1% w/w of PLA-based plastic particles. For freshwater Daphnia, reproduction was found a sensitive endpoint, upon exposure to the leachates of the PLA-based plastic. However, the reported toxicity seemed to be caused by the presence of 2-methylnaphthalene, which can be avoided in the production process. As for the marine organisms, algae growth was inhibited with a LOEC = 25 g L−1, whereas test with brine shrimp only revealed stimulation of lipase upon digestion of micro-sized PLA-based plastics. Marine lugworm ingested pristine and UV pre-treated micro-sized plastics, yet without impact either on biological activity, or on the health of the test individuals. Discussion: The approach used in the present work will contribute to product development, environmental safety and sustainable applications of the PLA-based mulch film BPE-AMF-PLA, in the scope of project BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE. Furthermore, the tools and results obtained in this work are a relevant contribution in the framework development for additional support in the certification of the bio-based polymers, being aligned with European zero waste and non-toxicity strategies, certification, and regulations
