Single spike solutions for strings on S2 and S3

    Get PDF
We study solutions for rigidly rotating strings on a two sphere. Among them we find two limiting cases that have a particular interest, one is the already known giant magnon and the other we call the single spike solution. The limiting behavior of this last solution is a string infinitely wrapped around the equator. It differs from that solution by the existence of a single spike of height theta that points toward the north pole. We study its properties and compute its energy E and angular momentum J as a function of theta. We further generalize the solution by adding one angular momentum to obtain a solution on S3. We find a spin chain interpretations of these results in terms of free fermions and the Hubbard model but the exact relation with the same models derived from the field theory is not clear.Comment: LaTeX, 20 pages, 3 figures. v2: Refs adde

D-brane Description of New Open String Solutions in AdS(5)

In this paper we find D-brane descriptions of some of new open string solutions that were found in 0804.3438[hep-th]. These D5-brane and D3-brane configurations give gravitational dual descriptions of Wilson loops in some particular representations.Comment: 13 pages, references adde

Notes on Euclidean Wilson loops and Riemann Theta functions

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM theory to minimal area surfaces in AdS5 space. In this paper we consider the case of Euclidean flat Wilson loops which are related to minimal area surfaces in Euclidean AdS3 space. Using known mathematical results for such minimal area surfaces we describe an infinite parameter family of analytic solutions for closed Wilson loops. The solutions are given in terms of Riemann theta functions and the validity of the equations of motion is proven based on the trisecant identity. The world-sheet has the topology of a disk and the renormalized area is written as a finite, one-dimensional contour integral over the world-sheet boundary. An example is discussed in detail with plots of the corresponding surfaces. Further, for each Wilson loops we explicitly construct a one parameter family of deformations that preserve the area. The parameter is the so called spectral parameter. Finally, for genus three we find a map between these Wilson loops and closed curves inside the Riemann surface.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures, pdflatex. V2: References added. Typos corrected. Spiky Strings on I-brane

We study rigidly rotating strings in the near horizon geometry of the 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of NS5-branes, the so called I-brane background. We solve the equations of motion of the fundamental string action in the presence of two form NS-NS fluxes that the I-brane background supports and write down general form of conserved quantities. We further find out two limiting cases corresponding to giant magnon and single spike like strings in various parameter space of solutions.Comment: 17 pages, major restructuring of text, added a referenc

    Generating AdS String Solutions

We use a Pohlmeyer type reduction to generate classical string solutions in AdS spacetime. In this framework we describe a correspondence between spikes in AdS_3 and soliton profiles of the sinh-Gordon equation. The null cusp string solution and its closed spinning string counterpart are related to the sinh-Gordon vacuum. We construct classical string solutions corresponding to sinh-Gordon solitons, antisolitons and breathers by the inverse scattering technique. The breather solutions can also be reproduced by the sigma model dressing method.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, references adde

Dual Spikes; New Spiky String Solutions

We find a new class of spiky solutions for closed strings in flat, AdS3⊂AdS5AdS_3\subset AdS_5 and R×S2(⊂S5)R\times S^2(\subset S^5) backgrounds. In the flat case the new solutions turn out to be T-dual configurations of spiky strings found by Kruczenski hep-th/0410226. In the case of solutions living in AdSAdS, we make a semi classical analysis by taking the large angular momentum limit. The anomalous dimension for these dual spikes is similar to that for rotating and pulsating circular strings in AdS with angular momentum playing the role of the level number. This replaces the well known logarithmic dependence for spinning strings. For the dual spikes living on sphere we find that no large angular momentum limit exists.Comment: Added reference

Neumann and Neumann-Rosochatius integrable systems from membranes on AdS_4xS^7

It is known that large class of classical string solutions in the type IIB AdS_5xS^5 background is related to the Neumann and Neumann-Rosochatius integrable systems, including spiky strings and giant magnons. It is also interesting if these integrable systems can be associated with some membrane configurations in M-theory. We show here that this is indeed the case by presenting explicitly several types of membrane embedding in AdS_4xS^7 with the searched properties.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, no figures;v2: comments and citations added;v3: 20 pages, new subsection, explanations, comments and references added; v4: some typos fixed, to appear in JHE

Three Spin Spiky Strings in beta-deformed Background

We study rigidly rotating strings in β\beta-deformed AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5 background with one spin along AdS5_5 and two angular momenta along S5S^5. We find the spiky string solutions and present the dispersion relation among various charges in this background. We further generalize the result to the case of four angular momenta along AdS5×Sγ5AdS_5 \times S_{\gamma}^5.Comment: 12 pages, minor corrections, added references, to appear in JHE

    Semiclassical strings in AdS(3) X S^2

In this paper, we investigate the semiclassical strings in AdS(3)XS^2, in which the string configuration of AdS(3) is classified to three cases depending on the parameters. Each of these has a different anomalous dimension proportional to logS, S^(1/3) and S, where S is a angular momentum on AdS(3). Further we generalize the dispersion relations for various string configuration on AdS(3)XS^2.Comment: 15 pages, added reference

Generalized cusp in AdS_4 x CP^3 and more one-loop results from semiclassical strings

    Get PDF
We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings whose world-surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS_4 and has a "jump" in CP^3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM generalized cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_{cusp}^{ABJM} (phi, theta) up to NLO in sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS_3 parts of AdS_4 x CP^3 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 backgrounds. Results are obtained applying to the string solutions relevant for the AdS_4/CFT_3 and AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence the tools previously developed for their AdS_5 x S^5 counterparts.Comment: 48 pages, 2 figures, version 3, corrected misprints in formulas 2.12, B.86, C.33, added comment on verification of the light-like limi
