Nonlinear fiber gyroscope for quantum metrology
We examine the performance of a nonlinear fiber gyroscope for improved signal
detection beating the quantum limits of its linear counterparts. The
performance is examined when the nonlinear gyroscope is illuminated by
practical field states, such as coherent and quadrature squeezed states. This
is compared with the case of more ideal probes such as photon-number states.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Staurosira magallanesica, a replacement name for Staurosira patagonica
Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales described a new species found in material of Maar Magallanes, Patagonia, Argentina and other lakes in southern Patagonia. This new species was analysed in detail by light and electron microscopy and a comprehensive description is given in Garcia et al. (2017: 107, 114, figs 2-45). However, this name is a later homonym of Staurosira patagonica Cleve, 1882. If we compare our species to Cleve’s illustration (Cleve 1882: pl. 16: fig. 13), we can easily differentiate the two by their general valve outline and morphometric data. As pointed out by Garcia et al. (2017), re-examination of the type material of members of the Fragilariaceae is needed to confirm identities, establish taxonomic boundaries and to facilitate identification, and this is also the case with Staurosira patagonica Cleve. A new name is, however, required for Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales as it is an illegitimate name: Staurosira magallanesica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales nom. nov. Replaced synonym: Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales Nova Hedwigia, Beiheft 146: 107, 114, figs 2-45, 2017, nom illeg., non Staurosira patagonica Cleve 1882 Öfversigt af Kongliga Svenska Vetenskaps-Akademiens Förhandlingar 38(10): 13, pl. 16: fig. 13, 1882 ‘1881’. Etymology: we have derived the specific epithet from the name of the paleolake Maar Magallanes where this new species was found for the first time by N.I.
Internet offers many lists of interactive resources; however, it is difficult to find analysis or
guides for using interactive applications for teaching Mathematics. This Final Degree Project,
framed in the modality of theoretical revision, has as its objective the analysis and selection of
interactive materials for the teaching of Block II: Numbers of the curriculum of Mathematics
in Primary Education. For this reason, the internet has been used for a systematic review of
educational resources, paying attention to those in which the mathematical motive is enough
solid to attract the attention of the students. The initial analysis concludes with the selection of
six sources of interactive mathematical resources, from which eight classified applications are
extracted as they are used to acquire or crystallize mathematical concepts related to Block II:
Numbers. Each resource has examples of use within the classroom turning this work into a
brief guide of Mathematical applications that saves time to those teachers who want to make
use of these interactive Mathematical resources.
Boundary conditions effects by Discontinuous Galerkin solvers for Boltzmann-Poisson models of electron transport
In this paper we perform, by means of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) Finite
Element Method (FEM) based numerical solvers for Boltzmann-Poisson (BP)
semiclassical models of hot electronic transport in semiconductors, a numerical
study of reflective boundary conditions in the BP system, such as specular
reflection, diffusive reflection, and a mixed convex combination of these
reflections, and their effect on the behavior of the solution. A boundary layer
effect is observed in our numerical simulations for the kinetic moments related
to diffusive and mixed reflection.Comment: appears in Computational Electronics (IWCE), 2014 International

Entropy-stable positivity-preserving DG schemes for Boltzmann-Poisson models of collisional electronic transport along energy bands
This work develops entropy-stable positivity-preserving DG methods as a
computational scheme for Boltzmann-Poisson systems modeling the pdf of
electronic transport along energy bands in semiconductor crystal lattices. We
pose, using spherical or energy-angular variables as momentum coordinates, the
corresponding Vlasov Boltzmann eq. with a linear collision operator with a
singular measure modeling the scattering as functions of the energy band. We
show stability results of semi-discrete DG schemes under an entropy norm for
1D-position 2D-momentum, and 2D-position 3D-momentum, using the dissipative
properties of the collisional operator given its entropy inequality, which
depends on the whole Hamiltonian rather than only the kinetic energy. For the
1D problem, knowledge of the analytic solution to Poisson and of the
convergence to a constant current is crucial to obtain full stability. For the
2D problem, specular reflection BC are considered in addition to periodicity in
the estimate for stability under an entropy norm. Regarding positivity
preservation (1D position), we treat the collision operator as a source term
and find convex combinations of the transport and collision terms which
guarantee the positivity of the cell average of our numerical pdf at the next
time step. The positivity of the numerical pdf in the whole domain is
guaranteed by applying the natural limiters that preserve the cell average but
modify the slope of the piecewise linear solutions in order to make the
function non-negative. The use of a spherical coordinate system
is slightly different to the choice
in previous DG solvers for BP, since the proposed DG formulation gives simpler
integrals involving just piecewise polynomial functions for both transport and
collision terms, which is more adequate for Gaussian quadrature than previous
approaches.Comment: Preprint. The first author acknowledges discussions with Eirik Endeve

Plasma cholesteryl ester fatty acids do not mediate the association of ethnicity with type 2 diabetes: results from the HELIUS study
Scope:
Ethnic minority groups have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the host population. Our aim was to identify whether plasma cholesteryl ester fatty acids (CEFA) mediate the ethnic differences in type 2 diabetes.
Methods and results:
We included 202 Dutch, 206 South-Asian Surinamese, 205 African Surinamese, 215 Turkish and 213 Moroccan origin participants of the HELIUS study (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Logistic regression was used to determine the associations between plasma CEFA and T2D. Mediation analysis was used to identify whether CEFA contributed to the association between ethnicity and T2D. We adjusted for ethnicity, age, sex, smoking, physical activity and BMI. Associations between plasma CEFA and T2D were similar across all ethnic groups. Although differences in plasma CEFA across ethnic groups were observed, CEFA did not mediate the differences in T2D prevalence between ethnic groups.
Conclusion:
Although ethnic differences in plasma CEFA were found and CEFA were associated with T2D, CEFA did not contribute to the difference in T2D prevalence between ethnic groups. If confirmed, this implies that maintenance of the more beneficial CEFA profiles in the non-Dutch ethnic groups may be encouraged to prevent an even higher prevalence of T2D in these groups
Diatom record of the last 1400 years in Laguna Pululos Jujuy, Argentina
This paper presents high-resolution (multi-decadal) paleoenvironmental data of the last 1400 years in the northwestern sector of the dry Puna, Jujuy Province (Argentina). This information results from the analysis of the diatom assemblies recovered from sediment core samples collected at Laguna Pululos (22º32’43’’ S; 66º48’25’’ W), a shallow lake located at 4557 m.a.s.l. In this work we present and discuss the main results regarding the species composition of the diatom assemblages, and the observed paleoenvironmental trends related to the main characteristics and chronology of the medieval climatic anomaly (MCA) and little ice age (LIA). The results of the study indicate the onset of very arid conditions between ~800 and 1500 AD, and a sharp change to moister conditions from the latter period until the end of the XIX century. Noteworthy, two periods could be recognized, one between 600 and 800 AD (the moistest phase of the last 1400 years), and between 1366 and 1463 AD (a particularly arid phase). These periods recorded in Laguna Pululos apparently shared characteristics with the MCA and LIA, although, showing differences with chronologies found in the North Hemisphere, with an extended span of the arid conditions during the MCA in comparison with other paleoenvironmental records of the Andes.Fil: Morales, Marcelo Raul.
