    Teachers’ Perceptions of The Wiggle Whomper Kit: Improving Sensory Regulation in the General Education Classroom®: A Pilot Study

    Increased emphasis on Response to Intervention and population based approaches in school systems is gaining popularity in literature. The current study examined the perceived effectiveness and patterns of use of The Wiggle Whomper Kit, a sensory regulation activity tool kit that was provided in all classrooms at a suburban elementary school. Thirty-six teachers and support personnel who had access to The Wiggle Whomper Kit were surveyed electronically, and member checking was performed through an interview with the school principal who was involved in The Wiggle Whomper Kit development and implementation. Responses (N = 9) indicated that The Wiggle Whomper Kit was most effective in increasing levels of attention, decreasing levels of hyperactivity, and increasing engagement in activities. Tools in The Wiggle Whomper Kit were used more often than activities, and tools were used by individual students more than by the class as a whole. Results also indicated that those who had a relationship with the school occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant rated The Wiggle Whomper Kit as effective more often, indicating that collaboration is an essential component for successful implementation of any tool or program

    A vane-type air-flow-direction pickup is described which is suitable for telemetering angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip data from rocket-propelled pilotless aircraft models. Test results which are presented show that the device performs well under high accelerations and is stable throughout a Mach number rage from subsonic to above a Mach number of 2.5

    The Aesthetic Experience, Flow, and Smart Technology: Viewing Art in a Virtual Environment

    Smart technology can support art educators and museum professionals in mediating the aesthetic experience. It can also increase museum attendance, enrich the viewer\u27s delight and engagement with artworks and art collections, and provide an avenue for extending art on a global level. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a mobile art app with text-based narrative influences scores on an aesthetic experience questionnaire. This quantitative research measured the difference in pretest and posttest human-computer interaction scores on the Aesthetic Experience Questionnaire Form after participants used two versions of a mobile art app. Csikszentmihalyi\u27s flow was the theoretical framework. After the administration of the pretest to 67 participants, 25 participants successfully viewed an art app with or without verbiage and then completed the posttest. Results revealed a significant (p \u3c .001) mean increase in questionnaire scores among the group that used the app with verbiage (mean difference = 0.41), but no significant improvement among the group that used the app without verbiage (mean difference = -0.03). These findings indicate that certain mobile technologies are capable of mediating an aesthetic experience. Future research may provide information to educators and museums about the quality of the aesthetic experience. This information may increase and enrich human aesthetic experiences with art and may assist to develop human understanding of different perceptions that ultimately engender inclusivity and positive social change

    Self-potential and direct current resistivity surveys are carried out at the Hidden Dam site in Raymond, California to assess present-day seepage patterns and better understand the hydrogeologic mechanisms that likely influence seepage. Numerical modeling is utilized in conjunction with the geophysical measurements to predict variably-saturated flow through typical two-dimensional dam cross-sections as a function of reservoir elevation. Several different flow scenarios are investigated based on the known hydrogeology, as well as information about typical subsurface structures gained from the resistivity survey. The flow models are also used to simulate the bulk electrical resistivity in the subsurface under varying saturation conditions, as well as the self-potential response using petrophysical relationships and electrokinetic coupling equations. The self-potential survey consists of 512 measurements on the downstream area of the dam, and corroborates known seepage areas on the northwest side of the dam. Two direct current resistivity profiles, each approximately 2,500 ft (762 m) long, indicate a broad sediment channel under the northwest side of the dam, which may be a significant seepage pathway through the foundation. A focusing of seepage in low-topography areas downstream of the dam is confirmed from the numerical flow simulations, which is also consistent with past observations. Little evidence of seepage is identified from the self-potential data on the southeast side of the dam, also consistent with historical records, though one possible area of focused seepage is identified near the outlet works. Integration of the geophysical surveys, numerical modeling, and observation well data provides a framework for better understanding seepage at the site through a combined hydrogeophysical approach

    Citizen education for adolescents has been judged ineffective for the most part because an academic orientation has failed to foster participatory citizenship. Recent research in the political socialization of youth strongly suggests that the schools have great potential for socializing youth for an active civic role. It was the purpose of this study to create and test a model of citizen education for early adolescents whose premise was that the political socialization of these young people could be enhanced by school and field experiences designed to promote personal development and commitment to responsible community involvement. The model drew upon: (a) Newmann's work with adolescents in a curriculum of active citizen education, (b) Mosher's work with adolescents in a curriculum of moral education, and (c) Hampden-Turner's model of psycho-social development from Radical Man.
