Forest resource planning in Cross River State : analysis of issues
The study is an effort to:
1. Review and analyze methods of forest resource planning to see how the existing knowledge can be applied to resource planning problems in the Cross River State forestry sector in Nigeria.
2. Review and analyze the planning environment regarding forestry in the Cross River State of Nigeria.
3. Develop an Agenda for improving forest resource planning in the Cross River State.
Most of the information for this study was gathered through library research and the author\u27s contact with resource planners in the U.S.A. Also part of the information comes from the author\u27s experience while working with the Cross River State Forest Service.
The Cross River State Forest Service is charged with the responsibility of administering the policy and laws relating to one of the state\u27s most important natural resources--the forests. This is a heavy administrative burden because the forest resource base faces increasing use pressures due to the rapidly rising population. Given relatively scarce forest resources, past management and planning procedures will not satisfy future demands.
Accordingly, there is need for the state government to rekindle its interest in long-range forest resource planning. A realistic process is needed to guide and develop the resource planning effort and the activities of the forest service. Such a planning process and state-wide forestry plan should spell out the role of the Cross River State Forest Service within the National Forestry Plan and identify the programmes necessary to fulfill this role.
Planning in general and forestry planning were reviewed. Samples of forestry plans from various states in the U.S.A. were analyzed. The common elements in these plans are the utilization of public involvement in plan design and the adoption of a planning process which consists of the following planning elements: issue identification; goal formulation; development of alternatives; evaluation and selection of alternative; implementation of the alternative chosen; and feedback.
An overview of the Cross River State planning environment is developed and outlines the economic, demographic, socio-cultural and institutional conditions impacting planning. Further background for understanding the specific barriers to forest resource planning and development in the state is also provided. Suggestions are made on how to solve the problems of data, personnel, finance, and organization. These issues are the priority items to be considered in trying to improve forestry planning in the Cross River State. Finally, a summary of the need for a state forestry plan and recommendations on potential areas of improvement are provided
Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Berry Essences
Inflammation is one of defense reactions of our body tissues against harmful stimuli such as infection and tissue injury. However, it has been reported that chronic inflammation can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This transition from acute to chronic inflammation state is usually induced by pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines including nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), which accelerate the development of other chronic diseases. Accordingly, targeting these pro-inflammatory factors is one of the important roles for anti-inflammatory agents. For last two decades, researches about anti-inflammatory effect of bioactive compounds from fruits and vegetables have increased. Among fruits and vegetables, berries are one of the most consumed fruits in our diet and have plenty of nutritive and non-nutritive components such as vitamins, minerals, and especially polyphenols and volatiles. Berry phenolic compounds are well known for having anti-inflammatory effect as well as antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity activities. However, berry volatiles, which are responsible for fruit flavor, have very limited information of health beneficial. Therefore, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of berry volatiles using LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cell model, by studying the modulation of production of NO, IL-6, and TNF-α and comparing results to berry phenolics. We found that volatiles from six berries (blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry) have comparable anti-inflammatory activity to berry phenolics by reducing the production of NO, IL-6, and TNF-α in vitro. Results from this study suggest that berry volatiles may be potential effective treatments to prevent inflammation-related diseases

Nurturing Cultures - A Cross-Cultural Perspective on the Intersection of Parenting and Teaching
Every society invests enormous resources to ensure that children grow up with the skills, knowledge, and values that will enable them to be successful. Yet cultures vary in their beliefs about what effective parenting and teaching require. Nurturing children involves a collaboration among parents, teachers, and students and reflects cultural beliefs about how to best foster learning. This dissertation consists of three studies that used different methods to reveal cultural beliefs about teaching and learning. Study 1 used PISA parent survey and achievement data to examine whether there are cultural differences in the kinds of parental involvement in schooling that predict children’s success. We found important cross-national differences in the types of parental involvement that predicts academic success, suggesting that not all types of parental involvement are equally effective and its utility depends on the cultural context in which it occurs. We argue that these different patterns of effective parental involvement exist because school systems vary in what they expect of students, the ways in which they are open to parental participation, and the extent to which learning opportunities exist outside of schools.
Study 2 used the same international dataset to cross-culturally compare students’ and parents’ perspectives on parental involvement in education and how these different perceptions relate to academic achievement. We found that the extent to which parent and child perceptions of parental support agree depends on both the type of parental involvement examined and the cultural context involved. Cross-national differences were particularly pronounced in one type of parental involvement – parental educational spending – suggesting that parental financial investment in education has different psychological and academic consequences for students in each cultural context.
Study 3 used an experimental approach and a new paradigm to obtain real-time data on how college students experience and learn from various aspects of teaching. We examined how students process initial perceptions and/or judgments of teachers as well as learn from the teaching quality they receive. Our results suggest that overall quality of instruction, as well as the specific teaching strategies and behaviors included in a lesson have significant consequences on both student learning and evaluation of the instruction. And contrary to what past research suggests, first impressions that teachers make in the first few minutes of a class do not matter as much as the quality of the lesson that follows. Most importantly, the continuous data collection technique used in this study has the potential to identify ways of improving and/or reinforcing various aspects instructional strategies that could in turn change the way students learn from classroom lessons.
By using such a wide range of methodological approaches, we were able to identify how different cultures organize the collaborative process of nurturing students into competent adults, and how students experience the education they receive. Taken together, the three studies examined the broader cultural context in which these nurturing efforts take place and how these different cultural models influence student learning. The results shed light on aspects of teaching and learning that are universal and also identify unique beliefs and practices that could be used to improve our own nurturing process in the U.S.PHDEducation & PsychologyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. On the Role of Primary and Secondary Assets in Adaptive Security: An Application in Smart Grids
peer-reviewedAdaptive security aims to protect valuable assets
managed by a system, by applying a varying set of security
controls. Engineering adaptive security is not an easy task. A
set of effective security countermeasures should be identified.
These countermeasures should not only be applied to (primary)
assets that customers desire to protect, but also to other
(secondary) assets that can be exploited by attackers to harm
the primary assets. Another challenge arises when assets vary
dynamically at runtime. To accommodate these variabilities, it
is necessary to monitor changes in assets, and apply the most
appropriate countermeasures at runtime. The paper provides
three main contributions for engineering adaptive security.
First, it proposes a modeling notation to represent primary
and secondary assets, along with their variability. Second,
it describes how to use the extended models in engineering
security requirements and designing required monitoring functions.
Third, the paper illustrates our approach through a set
of adaptive security scenarios in the customer domain of a
smart grid. We suggest that modeling secondary assets aids
the deployment of countermeasures, and, in combination with
a representation of assets variability, facilitates the design of
monitoring function

Economic impotance of flying visitors: migratory birds
This review aims to give a comprehensive summary of the economic importance of migratory birds using theoretical and empirical evidence provided in different literature and its influence on conservation and national development. Migration is a general phenomenon in the animal kingdom, which occurs in almost any vertebrate family on earth, several million European migratory birds en route to their winter quarters in Africa and on pre-nuptial flight to their European breeding grounds. It is a fundamental characteristic of the life history of many organisms and it is surely one of the most fascinating of all behaviours in animals without reservation. The huge number of migrating birds represents an important component of biodiversity indicators, occurring high in food chain and they are wide spread, diverse and mobile in most terrestrial and marine habitat across the continents. Many bird species display elaborate ornaments including feather structures such as facial plumes, crests, and tail streamers and bare part ornaments such as bill plates, knobs and wattles during their breeding seasons which promote tourism and hunting basically for trophies. Apart from that, game birds are also capable of producing oil. Nature based tourism and recreation, such as the viewing of wildlife coupled with; management of migratory birds promotes market for other industrial goods such as lead shot, guns and binocular. Keywords: Migration; Recreation and Tourism; Trophies; Ornament; Food; Production of Oi
