Data and the city – accessibility and openness. a cybersalon paper on open data
This paper showcases examples of bottom–up open data and smart city applications and identifies lessons for future such efforts. Examples include Changify, a neighbourhood-based platform for residents, businesses, and companies; Open Sensors, which provides APIs to help businesses, startups, and individuals develop applications for the Internet of Things; and Cybersalon’s Hackney Treasures. a location-based mobile app that uses Wikipedia entries geolocated in Hackney borough to map notable local residents. Other experiments with sensors and open data by Cybersalon members include Ilze Black and Nanda Khaorapapong's The Breather, a "breathing" balloon that uses high-end, sophisticated sensors to make air quality visible; and James Moulding's AirPublic, which measures pollution levels. Based on Cybersalon's experience to date, getting data to the people is difficult, circuitous, and slow, requiring an intricate process of leadership, public relations, and perseverance. Although there are myriad tools and initiatives, there is no one solution for the actual transfer of that data
New-Physics Effects on Triple-Product Correlations in Lambda_b Decays
We adopt an effective-lagrangian approach to compute the new-physics
contributions to T-violating triple-product correlations in charmless Lambda_b
decays. We use factorization and work to leading order in the heavy-quark
expansion. We find that the standard-model (SM) predictions for such
correlations can be significantly modified. For example, triple products which
are expected to vanish in the SM can be enormous (~50%) in the presence of new
physics. By measuring triple products in a variety of Lambda_b decays, one can
diagnose which new-physics operators are or are not present. Our general
results can be applied to any specific model of new physics by simply

Detection of synchronization from univariate data using wavelet transform
A method is proposed for detecting from univariate data the presence of
synchronization of a self-sustained oscillator by external driving with varying
frequency. The method is based on the analysis of difference between the
oscillator instantaneous phases calculated using continuous wavelet transform
at time moments shifted by a certain constant value relative to each other. We
apply our method to a driven asymmetric van der Pol oscillator, experimental
data from a driven electronic oscillator with delayed feedback and human
heartbeat time series. In the latest case, the analysis of the heart rate
variability data reveals synchronous regimes between the respiration and slow
oscillations in blood pressure.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Twisted Split Fermions
The observed flavor structure of the standard model arises naturally in
"split fermion" models which localize fermions at different places in an extra
dimension. It has, until now, been assumed that the bulk masses for such
fermions can be chosen to be flavor diagonal simultaneously at every point in
the extra dimension, with all the flavor violation coming from the Yukawa
couplings to the Higgs. We consider the more natural possibility in which the
bulk masses cannot be simultaneously diagonalized, that is, that they are
twisted in flavor space. We show that, in general, this does not disturb the
natural generation of hierarchies in the flavor parameters. Moreover, it is
conceivable that all the flavor mixing and CP-violation in the standard model
may come only from twisting, with the five-dimensional Yukawa couplings taken

Non-Gaussian velocity distributions in excited granular matter in the absence of clustering
The velocity distribution of spheres rolling on a slightly tilted rectangular
two dimensional surface is obtained by high speed imaging. The particles are
excited by periodic forcing of one of the side walls. Our data suggests that
strongly non-Gaussian velocity distributions can occur in dilute granular
materials even in the absence of significant density correlations or
clustering. When the surface on which the particles roll is tilted further to
introduce stronger gravitation, the collision frequency with the driving wall
increases and the velocity component distributions approach Gaussian

Supersymmetry Breaking in Warped Geometry
We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in supersymmetric
theories on a slice of AdS_5 which generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings
by dynamically localizing the bulk matter fields in extra dimension. Such
models can be regarded as the AdS dual of the recently studied 4-dimensional
models which contain a supersymmetric CFT to generate the hierarchical Yukawa
couplings. In such models, if supersymmetry breaking is mediated by the bulk
radion superfield and/or some brane chiral superfields, potentially dangerous
flavor-violating soft parameters can be naturally suppressed, thereby avoiding
the SUSY flavor problem. We present some models of radion-dominated
supersymmetry breaking which yield a highly predictive form of soft parameters
