On invariants of almost symplectic connections
We study the irreducible decomposition under Sp(2n, R) of the space of
torsion tensors of almost symplectic connections. Then a description of all
symplectic quadratic invariants of torsion-like tensors is given. When applied
to a manifold M with an almost symplectic structure, these instruments give
preliminary insight for finding a preferred linear almost symplectic connection
on M . We rediscover Ph. Tondeur's Theorem on almost symplectic connections.
Properties of torsion of the vectorial kind are deduced
Principal Component Analysis of Cavity Beam Position Monitor Signals
Model-independent analysis (MIA) methods are generally useful for analysing
complex systems in which relationships between the observables are non-trivial
and noise is present. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is one of MIA methods
allowing to isolate components in the input data graded to their contribution
to the variability of the data. In this publication we show how the PCA can be
applied to digitised signals obtained from a cavity beam position monitor
(CBPM) system on the example of a 3-cavity test system installed at the
Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK in Japan. We demonstrate that the PCA
based method can be used to extract beam position information, and matches
conventional techniques in terms of performance, while requiring considerably
less settings and data for calibration
Effect of Compton Scattering on the Electron Beam Dynamics at the ATF Damping Ring
Compton scattering provides one of the most promising scheme to obtain
polarized positrons for the next generation of -- colliders.
Moreover it is an attractive method to produce monochromatic high energy
polarized gammas for nuclear applications and X-rays for compact light sources.
In this framework a four-mirror Fabry-P\'erot cavity has been installed at the
Accelerator Test Facility (ATF - KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and is used to produce an
intense flux of polarized gamma rays by Compton scattering
\cite{ipac-mightylaser}. For electrons at the ATF energy (1.28 GeV) Compton
scattering may result in a shorter lifetime due to the limited bucket
acceptance. We have implemented the effect of Compton scattering on a 2D
tracking code with a Monte-Carlo method. This code has been used to study the
longitudinal dynamics of the electron beam at the ATF damping ring, in
particular the evolution of the energy spread and the bunch length under
Compton scattering. The results obtained are presented and discussed. Possible
methods to observe the effect of Compton scattering on the ATF beam are
proposed
Twistor theory on a finite graph
We show how the description of a shear-free ray congruence in Minkowski space
as an evolving family of semi-conformal mappings can naturally be formulated on
a finite graph. For this, we introduce the notion of holomorphic function on a
graph. On a regular coloured graph of degree three, we recover the space-time
picture. In the spirit of twistor theory, where a light ray is the more
fundamental object from which space-time points should be derived, the line
graph, whose points are the edges of the original graph, should be considered
as the basic object. The Penrose twistor correspondence is discussed in this
context

Cosmological perturbations in a healthy extension of Horava gravity
In Horava's theory of gravity, Lorentz symmetry is broken in exchange for
renormalizability, but the original theory has been argued to be plagued with
problems associated with a new scalar mode stemming from the very breaking of
Lorentz symmetry. Recently, Blas, Pujolas, and Sibiryakov have proposed a
healthy extension of Horava gravity, in which the behavior of the scalar mode
is improved. In this paper, we study scalar modes of cosmological perturbations
in extended Horava gravity. The evolution of metric and density perturbations
is addressed analytically and numerically. It is shown that for vanishing
non-adiabatic pressure of matter the large scale evolution of cosmological
perturbations converges to that described by a single constant, , which
is an analog of a curvature perturbation on the uniform-density slicing
commonly used in usual gravitational theories. The subsequent evolution is thus
determined completely by the value of .Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; v2: published versio
An ingress and a complete transit of HD 80606 b
We have used four telescopes at different longitudes to obtain
near-continuous lightcurve coverage of the star HD 80606 as it was transited by
its \sim 4-MJup planet. The observations were performed during the predicted
transit windows around the 25th of October 2008 and the 14th of February 2009.
Our data set is unique in that it simultaneously constrains the duration of the
transit and the planet's period. Our Markov-Chain Monte Carlo analysis of the
light curves, combined with constraints from radial-velocity data, yields
system parameters consistent with previously reported values. We find a
planet-to-star radius ratio marginally smaller than previously reported,
corresponding to a planet radius of Rp = 0.921 \pm 0.036RJup .Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, MNRAS accepte
A Simple Operator Check of the Effective Fermion Mode Function during Inflation
We present a relatively simple operator formalism which reproduces the
leading infrared logarithm of the one loop quantum gravitational correction to
the fermion mode function on a locally de Sitter background. This rule may
serve as the basis for an eventual stochastic formulation of quantum gravity
during inflation. Such a formalism would not only effect a vast simplification
in obtaining the leading powers of at fixed loop orders, it would also
permit us to sum the series of leading logarithms. A potentially important
point is that our rule does not seem to be consistent with any simple infrared
truncation of the fields. Our analysis also highlights the importance of spin
as a gravitational interaction that persists even when kinetic energy has
redshifted to zero.Comment: 39 pages, no figuire.(1) New version has clarified the ultimate
motivation by adding sentences to the abstract and to the penultimate
paragraph of the introduction. (2) By combining a number of references and
equations we have managed to reduce the length by 2 page

The ocean's gravitational potential energy budget in a coupled climate model
This study examines, in a unified fashion, the budgets of ocean gravitational potential energy (GPE) and available gravitational potential energy (AGPE) in the control simulation of the coupled atmosphere–ocean general
circulation model HadCM3. Only AGPE can be converted into kinetic energy by adiabatic processes. Diapycnal mixing supplies GPE, but not AGPE, whereas the reverse is true of the combined effect of surface buoyancy forcing and convection. Mixing and buoyancy forcing, thus, play complementary roles in sustaining the large scale circulation. However, the largest globally integrated source of GPE is resolved advection (+0.57 TW) and the largest sink is through parameterized eddy transports (-0.82 TW). The effect of these adiabatic processes on AGPE is identical to their effect on GPE, except for
perturbations to both budgets due to numerical leakage exacerbated by non-linearities in the equation of state
