Exchange coupling in Eu monochalcogenides from first principles

Using a density functional method with explicit account for strong Coulomb repulsion within the 4f shell, we calculate effective exchange parameters and the corresponding ordering temperatures of the (ferro)magnetic insulating Eu monochalcogenides (EuX; X=O,S,Se,Te) at ambient and elevated pressure conditions. Our results provide quantitative account of the many-fold increase of the Curie temperatures with applied pressure and reproduce well the enhancement of the tendency toward ferromagnetic ordering across the series from telluride to oxide, including the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic ordering under pressure in EuTe and EuSe. The first and second neighbor effective exchange are shown to follow different functional dependencies. Finally, model calculations indicate a significant contribution of virtual processes involving the unoccupied f states to the effective exchange.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Changes in the Structure of Nest Complexes of the Red Wood Ants Formica rufa and F. polyctena (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in Urban Forests

The aim of this work is to evaluate changes in the structure of nest complexes of two species of red wood ants: Formica rufa Linnaeus, 1761 and F. polyctena Foerster, 1850, in the city of Kyiv (Ukraine) using morpho[1]metric indicators, as well as to evaluate their dynamics. In 2014–2022, nest complexes of two species of red wood ants (Formica rufa, F. polyctena) were observed in urbanised forests within the city of Kyiv. A total of 472 F. rufa and 411 F. polyctena nests were studied in 7 nest complexes (4 — F. polyctena, 3 — F. rufa). The total volume of F. polyctena nests were found to decrease by 2020–2021, while the volume of F. rufa nests remained at the same level or even increased. This suggests that F. rufa is more resistant to changes in forestry conditions

When assessing the condition of Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1858) nest complexes, plant communities should be considered. The aim of this work is to analyse ecological characteristics and structure of L. niger nest complexes using vegetation data. The study was conducted in Ukraine, in June 2017 (a nest complex on a territory near Vyshneve, Kyiv Oblast, 502 nest mounds) and in June 2022 (Chaika, Kyiv Oblast, 72 nest mounds, Stara Ushytsia, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, 134 nest mounds). Morphometric parametres of the mounds (diameter, height), their relative position and size classes in squares of 100 m2 were studied. At the same time, vegetation plots were carried out. Differences in the structure of L. niger nest mounds discussed previously are at least partly result from differences in the ecological conditions of the localities. Of the six ecological indicators (Hd — Tm), three — soil acidity and nitrogen, and the hemeroby indicator, which assesses the degree of anthropogenic pollution — have a significant influence on the abundance of L. niger nest mounds. These factors were shown to have a significant influence on the ant colony volume indicator. For most indicators, except moisture and light, the optimum for L. niger was close to 50 points (middle of the scale). For the anthropogenic factor, the range of values was the widest, which indirectly confirms the relative tolerance of this species to the anthropogenic influence of moderate intensity and allows its existence in urban conditions where competitive pressure from other species is lower. The sign of regression coefficient, especially the positive sign for the acidity and nitrogen indicators, demonstrates positive effect of these factors on the ant colony structure indicators

One of the main criteria for health is still a rate of a, which in civilization’s countries is constantly decreasing, which causes the lengthening of life. However, along with this significantly changes the structure of morbidity: reduction of infectious diseases accompanied by increased infectious. All of these diseases can be divided into professional and vocational-conditioned.   Key words: health, disease, occupational diseases, professional diseases due to

On multidimensional analogs of Melvin's solution for classical series of Lie algebras

A multidimensional generalization of Melvin's solution for an arbitrary simple Lie algebra G\cal G is presented. The gravitational model contains n 2-forms and lnl \geq n scalar fields, wheren is the rank of G\cal G. The solution is governed by a set of n functions obeying n ordinary differential equations with certain boundary conditions. It was conjectured earlier that these functions should be polynomials (the so-called fluxbrane polynomials). A program (in Maple) for calculating of these polynomials for classical series of Lie algebras is suggested (see Appendix). The polynomials corresponding to the Lie algebra D_4 are obtained. It is conjectured that the polynomials for A_n-, B_n- and C_n-series may be obtained from polynomials for D_{n+1}-series by using certain reduction formulas.Comment: 6 pages, based on a report at RUSGRAV-13 (23-28 June, 2008, PFUR, Moscow

Sulfonated octa-substituted Co(II) phthalocyanines immobilized on silica matrix as catalyst for Thiuram E synthesis

© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Silica nanoparticles were obtained during the work according to two different sol–gel methods. In first one Schtrober's technique and series of cobalt phthalocyanine metal complexes varying in peripheral substituents were used. Second method was performed using the same complexes but differed in applying surface-active substance (SAS) and two precursors – tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMOS). All obtained hybrid materials were analyzed via SEM, the size of single particle was studied, which in all cases was about 200 nm. In order to investigate hybrid's characteristics laser diffraction and liquid nitrogen adsorption methods were applied. Distinction in pore's specific volume of differently-obtained nanoparticles was found. Catalytic activity of all obtained materials were tested in conversion of N,N-diethylcarbamodithiolate to thiuram E. Effect of peripherally substituted phthalocyanines and morphology of matrixes were manifested on catalytic activity of the hybrids

Polymorphic loci of coat color in mini-pigs

The present work is phenomenological and purely descriptive. It shows polymorphism of colors in a breeding group of mini-pig in the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICG SB RAS) and makes some assumptions about the nature of this genetic diversity. In the ICG SB RAS mini-pig herd, wild-type coloration (agouti), black-spots, black and white color are present. All these options have variants, including previously undescribed, with genetically determined differences. In addition, the ICG SB RAS mini-pigs have variants inherent only to heterozygous individuals and archaic gray color described only in primitive domestic pig. Comparison of the observed color phenotypes in the breeding with literature data showed that EDNRB, KIT, KITLG and the MC1R are polymorphic loci, while ASIP, OCA2 and TYRP1 are monomorphic loci. Thus, the loci that control the most common coat colors in domestic pigs are polymorphic, while those controlling rare or relatively rare colors and monomorphic. The research allowed us to put forward some assumptions concerning the genetic determination of the phenotypic characteristics of color seen in the study group selection. Among these assumptions is one about the genetic control of juvenile colors in domestic pigs. Observations made in the ICG SB RAS mini-pig breeding group allowed us to examine and describe the features of age-related changes of an embodiment of black-motley suit, when newborn piglets originally have black-and-motley fur color on the brick-red background and at an age of one year, a gray roan background formed by a mixture of white and black hairs. In addition, it was shown that with the help of technical means black spots can also be detected on a black background

Juvenile coat colours in mini-pigs at ICG

This article continues a previous study colors in minipigs at ICG. It also has a phenomenological character, but it consideres juvenile colour, which is an integral element of the ontogenetic formation of the suit, wild type agouti pigs of the species Sus scrofa L. However, in ICG mini pigs, in addition to individuals with the suit of the wild type, juvenile colour is a feature of pigs with the black spotted suit. It should be noted that data about a similar phenomenon in pigs with black spotted colour were not found in the literature. We proposed that a unique juvenile colour of black spotted mini-pigs ICG is a consequence of increased synthesis of pigments of hair, the intensity of which obviously exceeds the performance by the wild boar and domestic pigs. Newborn piglets of mini pigs ICG of the colour of the wild type typically have too little or too much yellow (orange, brown) pigment, which makes the figure of juvenile livery blurry – low contrast, or the lack of it, with the result that they are gray or gray-blue color with dark gray longitudinal stripes. The pattern of juvenile livery piglets of mini pigs ICG is disrupted. As a rule, instead of a longitudinal stripe, a mesh pattern livery is observed. Therefore, the agouti like colour observed in mini-pigs ICG should rather be called more properly pseudowild type. It was suggested that the specially planned crosses were able to “reveal” the genetic load of mutations in the complex of alleles involved in the formation of the suit of the wild type and accumulated in the population, not exposed to stabilizing selection on this archaic for domestic pigs’ colour. The accumulation of this genetic cargo at the mini-pigs was made possible by gipostatic suit wild type relative to epistatic colour standard for modern commercial plant breeds
