Generic spectral properties of right triangle billiards
This article presents a new method to calculate eigenvalues of right triangle
billiards. Its efficiency is comparable to the boundary integral method and
more recently developed variants. Its simplicity and explicitness however allow
new insight into the statistical properties of the spectra. We analyse
numerically the correlations in level sequences at high level numbers (>10^5)
for several examples of right triangle billiards. We find that the strength of
the correlations is closely related to the genus of the invariant surface of
the classical billiard flow. Surprisingly, the genus plays and important role
on the quantum level also. Based on this observation a mechanism is discussed,
which may explain the particular quantum-classical correspondence in right
triangle billiards. Though this class of systems is rather small, it contains
examples for integrable, pseudo integrable, and non integrable (ergodic,
mixing) dynamics, so that the results might be relevant in a more general
context.Comment: 18 pages, 8 eps-figures, revised: stylistic changes, improved

Modification of pet ion-track membranes by silica nanoparticles for direct contact membrane distillation of salt solutions
The paper describes desalination by membrane distillation (MD) using ion-track membranes. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) ion-track membranes were hydrophobized by the immobilization of hydrophobic vinyl-silica nanoparticles (Si NPs). Si NPs were synthesized by the sol-gel method, and the addition of the surfactant led to the formation of NPs with average size of 40 nm. The thermal initiator fixed to the surface of membranes allowed attachment of triethoxyvinyl silane Si NPs at the membrane surface. To further increase hydrophobicity, ethoxy groups were fluorinated. The morphology and chemical structure of prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XPS spectroscopy, and a gas permeability test. Hydrophobic properties were evaluated by contact angle (CA) and liquid entry pressure (LEP) measurements. Membranes with CA 125–143◦ were tested in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) of 30 g/L saline solution. Membranes showed water fluxes from 2.2 to 15.4 kg/(m2·h) with salt rejection values of 93–99%. © 2020 by the authors. Measurement of the decay form factors in the OKA experiment
A precise measurement of the vector and axial-vector form factors difference
in the decay is presented.
About 95K events of are selected in
the OKA experiment. The result is .
Both errors are smaller than in the previous measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Spectral properties of quantized barrier billiards
The properties of energy levels in a family of classically pseudointegrable
systems, the barrier billiards, are investigated. An extensive numerical study
of nearest-neighbor spacing distributions, next-to-nearest spacing
distributions, number variances, spectral form factors, and the level dynamics
is carried out. For a special member of the billiard family, the form factor is
calculated analytically for small arguments in the diagonal approximation. All
results together are consistent with the so-called semi-Poisson statistics.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Classical wave experiments on chaotic scattering
We review recent research on the transport properties of classical waves
through chaotic systems with special emphasis on microwaves and sound waves.
Inasmuch as these experiments use antennas or transducers to couple waves into
or out of the systems, scattering theory has to be applied for a quantitative
interpretation of the measurements. Most experiments concentrate on tests of
predictions from random matrix theory and the random plane wave approximation.
In all studied examples a quantitative agreement between experiment and theory
is achieved. To this end it is necessary, however, to take absorption and
imperfect coupling into account, concepts that were ignored in most previous
theoretical investigations. Classical phase space signatures of scattering are
being examined in a small number of experiments.Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures; invited review for the Special Issue of J.

The Polarised Valence Quark Distribution from semi-inclusive DIS
The semi-inclusive difference asymmetry A^{h^{+}-h^{-}} for hadrons of
opposite charge has been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data
were collected in the years 2002-2004 using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam
scattered off a large polarised ^6LiD target and cover the range 0.006 < x <
0.7 and 1 < Q^2 < 100 (GeV/c)^2. In leading order QCD (LO) the asymmetry
A_d^{h^{+}-h^{-}} measures the valence quark polarisation and provides an
evaluation of the first moment of Delta u_v + Delta d_v which is found to be
equal to 0.40 +- 0.07 (stat.) +- 0.05 (syst.) over the measured range of x at
Q^2 = 10 (GeV/c)^2. When combined with the first moment of g_1^d previously
measured on the same data, this result favours a non-symmetric polarisation of
light quarks Delta u-bar = - Delta d-bar at a confidence level of two standard
deviations, in contrast to the often assumed symmetric scenario Delta u-bar =
Delta d-bar = Delta s-bar = Delta s.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, COMPASS, revised: details added, author list

Determination of scattering lengths from measurement of atom lifetime
The DIRAC experiment at CERN has achieved a sizeable production of
atoms and has significantly improved the precision on its lifetime
determination. From a sample of 21227 atomic pairs, a 4% measurement of the
S-wave scattering length difference
has been attained, providing an important test of Chiral Perturbation Theory.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
