Summary of the Mini BNL/LARP/CARE-HHH Workshop on Crab Cavities for the LHC (LHC-CC08)
The first mini-workshop on crab compensation for the LHC luminosity upgrade (LHC-CC08) was held February 24-25, 2008 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. A total of 35 participants from 3 continents and 15 institutions from around the world participated to discuss the exciting prospect of a crab scheme for the LHC. If realized it will be the first demonstration in hadron colliders. The workshop is organized by joint collaboration of BNL, US-LARP and CARE-HHH. The enormous interest in the subject of crab cavities for the international linear collider and future light sources has resulted in a large international collaboration to exchange aspects of synergy and expertise. A central repository for this exchange of information documenting the latest design effort for LHC crab cavities is consolidated in a wiki page: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Main/LHCCrabCavities. The main goal of this workshop was to define a road-map for a prototype crab cavity to be installed in the LHC and to discuss the associated R&D and beam dynamics challenges. The diverse subject of implementing the crab scheme resulted in a scientific program with a wide range of subtopics which were divided into 8 sessions. Each session was given a list of fundamental questions to be addressed and used as a guideline to steer the discussions
A mathematical formalism for the Kondo effect in WZW branes
In this paper, we show how to adapt our rigorous mathematical formalism for
closed/open conformal field theory so that it captures the known physical
theory of branes in the WZW model. This includes a mathematically precise
approach to the Kondo effect, which is an example of evolution of one
conformally invariant boundary condition into another through boundary
conditions which can break conformal invariance, and a proposed mathematical
statement of the Kondo effect conjecture. We also review some of the known
physical results on WZW boundary conditions from a mathematical perspective.Comment: Added explanations of the settings and main result
Review of Linac-Ring Type Collider Proposals
There are three possibly types of particle colliders schemes: familiar (well
known) ring-ring colliders, less familiar however sufficiently advanced linear
colliders and less familiar and less advanced linac-ring type colliders. The
aim of this paper is two-fold: to present possibly complete list of papers on
linac-ring type collider proposals and to emphasize the role of linac-ring type

The first terawatt picosecond CO{sub 2} laser for advanced accelerator studies at the Brookhaven ATF
The first terawatt picosecond C0{sub 2} laser system is under development at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility. Presently operational 1 Joule 100-ps ATF laser will be upgraded with a 10 atm amplifier capable of delivery {approximately} 15 Joules of laser energy in a 3 ps pulse. We describe the design of the x-ray preionized 10 atm amplifier of a 10 liter active volume energized by a 1 MV, 200 kA transverse electric discharge. The amplifier, equipped with internal optics, permits the accommodation of a regenerative stage and a multi-pass booster in a relatively compact single discharge volume. The ATF terawatt C0{sub 2} laser shall become operational in 1997 to serve for laser acceleration, x-ray generation and other strong-field physics experiments
