Joint searches between gravitational-wave interferometers and high-energy neutrino telescopes: science reach and analysis strategies

    Get PDF
    Many of the astrophysical sources and violent phenomena observed in our Universe are potential emitters of gravitational waves (GWs) and high-energy neutrinos (HENs). A network of GW detectors such as LIGO and Virgo can determine the direction/time of GW bursts while the IceCube and ANTARES neutrino telescopes can also provide accurate directional information for HEN events. Requiring the consistency between both, totally independent, detection channels shall enable new searches for cosmic events arriving from potential common sources, of which many extra-galactic objects.Comment: 4 pages. Dzyaloshinski-Moriya Interaction in the 2D Spin Gap System SrCu2(BO3)2

    Full text link
    The Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction partially lifts the magnetic frustration of the spin-1/2 oxide SrCu2(BO3)2. It explains the fine structure of the excited triplet state and its unusual magnetic field dependence, as observed in previous ESR and new neutron inelastic scattering experiments. We claim that it is mainly responsible for the dispersion. We propose also a new mechanism for the observed ESR transitions forbidden by standard selection rules, that relies on an instantaneous Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction induced by spin-phonon couplings.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, symmetries clarified, added references, (v3) correct addres

    Microscopic Mechanism and Pairing Symmetry of Superconductivity in the Noncentrosymmetric Heavy Fermion Systems CeRhSI3_3 and CeIrSi3_3

    Full text link
    We study the pairing symmetry of the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors CeRhSi3_3 and CeIrSi3_3 under pressures, which are both antiferromagnets at ambient pressure. We solve the Eliashberg equation by means of the random phase approximation and find that the mixed state of extended s-wave and p-wave rather than the d+fd+f wave state could be realized by enhanced antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. It is elucidated that the gap function has line nodes on the Fermi surface and the resulting density of state in the superconducting state shows a similar character to that of usual d-wave superconductors, resulting in the NMR relaxation rate 1/(T1T)1/(T_1T) that exhibits no coherence peak and behaves like 1/(T1T)T21/(T_1T)\propto T^2 at low temperatures

    Memory improvement in the AβPP/PS1 mouse model of familial Alzheimer's disease induced by carbamylated-erythropoietin is accompanied by modulation of synaptic genes

    Neuroprotection of erythropoietin (EPO) following long-term administration is hampered by the associated undesirable effects on hematopoiesis and body weight. For this reason, we tested carbamylated-EPO (CEPO), which has no effect on erythropoiesis, and compared it with EPO in the AβPP/PS1 mouse model of familial Alzheimer's disease. Groups of 5-month-old wild type (WT) and transgenic mice received chronic treatment consisting of CEPO (2,500 or 5,000 UI/kg) or EPO (2,500 UI/kg) 3 days/week for 4 weeks. Memory at the end of treatment was assessed with the object recognition test. Microarray analysis and quantitative-PCR were used for gene expression studies. No alterations in erythropoiesis were observed in CEPO-treated WT and AβPP/PS1 transgenic mice. EPO and CEPO improved memory in AβPP/PS1 animals. However, only EPO decreased amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque burden and soluble Aβ40. Microarray analysis of gene expression revealed a limited number of common genes modulated by EPO and CEPO. CEPO but not EPO significantly increased gene expression of dopamine receptors 1 and 2, and adenosine receptor 2a, and significantly down-regulated adrenergic receptor α1D and gastrin releasing peptide. CEPO treatment resulted in higher protein levels of dopamine receptors 1 and 2 in WT and AβPP/PS1 animals, whereas the adenosine receptor 2a was reduced in WT animals. The present results suggest that the improved behavior observed in AβPP/PS1 transgenic mice after CEPO treatment may be mediated, at least in part, by the observed modulation of the expression of molecules involved in neurotransmission

    Spectral Correlation in Incommensurate Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    Full text link
    We investigate the energy spectra of clean incommensurate double-walled carbon nanotubes, and find that the overall spectral properties are described by the so-called critical statistics of Anderson metal-insulator transition. In the energy spectra, there exist three different regimes characterized by Wigner-Dyson, Poisson, and semi-Poisson distributions. This feature implies that the electron transport in incommensurate multi-walled nanotubes can be either diffusive, ballistic, or intermediate between them, depending on the position of the Fermi energy.Comment: final version to appear in Phys. Study of B -> \rho \pi decays at Belle

    Full text link
    This paper describes a study of B meson decays to the pseudoscalar-vector final state \rho\pi using 31.9\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions B(B^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+) = (8.0^{+2.3+0.7}_{-2.0-0.7}) \times 10^{-6} and B(B^0 -> \rho^{+-} \pi^{-+}) = (20.8^{+6.0+2.8}_{-6.3-3.1}) \times 10^{-6} are obtained. In addition, a 90% confidence level upper limit of B(B^0 \to \rho^0\pi^0) < 5.3 \times 10^{-6}is reported.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Anomalous Spin Response in Non-centrosymmetric Compounds

    Full text link
    We examine static spin susceptibilities χαβ(q)\chi_{\alpha\beta}({\bf q}) of spin components SαS_{\alpha} and SβS_{\beta} in the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal system. These show anomalous momentum dependences like χxx(q)χyy(q)qx2qy2\chi_{xx}({\bf q})-\chi_{yy}({\bf q})\sim q_x^2-q_y^2 and χxy(q)+χyx(q)qxqy\chi_{xy}({\bf q})+\chi_{yx}({\bf q})\sim q_x q_y, which vanish in centrosymmetric systems. The magnitudes of the anomalous spin susceptibilities are enhanced by the on-site Coulomb interaction, especially, around an ordering wave vector. The significant and anomalous momentum dependences of these susceptibilities are explained by a group theoretical analysis. As the direct probe of the anomalous spin susceptibility, we propose a polarized neutron scattering experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 4 figure
