XMM-Newton and Deep Optical Observations of the OTELO fields: the Groth-Westphal Strip
OTELO (OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object Survey) will be carried out with
the OSIRIS instrument at the 10 m GTC telescope at La Palma, and is aimed to be
the deepest and richest survey of emission line objects to date. The deep
narrow-band optical data from OSIRIS will be complemented by means of
additional observations that include: (i) an exploratory broad-band survey that
is already being carried out in the optical domain, (ii) FIR and sub-mm
observations to be carried with the Herschel space telescope and the GTM, and
(iii) deep X-Ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra. Here we present a
preliminary analysis of public EPIC data of one of the OTELO targets, the
Groth-Westphal strip, gathered from the XMM-Newton Science Archive (XSA). EPIC
images are combined with optical BVRI data from our broadband survey carried
out with the 4.2m WHT at La Palma. Distance-independent diagnostics (involving
X/O ratio, hardness ratios, B/T ratio) are tested.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, uses graphicx package. To appear in proceedings

Active galactic nuclei synapses: X-ray versus optical classifications using artificial neural networks
(Abridged) Many classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been defined
entirely throughout optical wavelengths while the X-ray spectra have been very
useful to investigate their inner regions. However, optical and X-ray results
show many discrepancies that have not been fully understood yet. The aim of
this paper is to study the "synapses" between the X-ray and optical
classifications.
For the first time, the new EFLUXER task allowed us to analyse broad band
X-ray spectra of emission line nuclei (ELN) without any prior spectral fitting
using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Our sample comprises 162 XMM-Newton/pn
spectra of 90 local ELN in the Palomar sample. It includes starbursts (SB),
transition objects (T2), LINERs (L1.8 and L2), and Seyferts (S1, S1.8, and S2).
The ANNs are 90% efficient at classifying the trained classes S1, S1.8, and
SB. The S1 and S1.8 classes show a wide range of S1- and S1.8-like components.
We suggest that this is related to a large degree of obscuration at X-rays. The
S1, S1.8, S2, L1.8, L2/T2/SB-AGN (SB with indications of AGN), and SB classes
have similar average X-ray spectra within each class, but these average spectra
can be distinguished from class to class. The S2 (L1.8) class is linked to the
S1.8 (S1) class with larger SB-like component than the S1.8 (S1) class. The L2,
T2, and SB-AGN classes conform a class in the X-rays similar to the S2 class
albeit with larger fractions of SB-like component. This SB-like component is
the contribution of the star-formation in the host galaxy, which is large when
the AGN is weak. An AGN-like component seems to be present in the vast majority
of the ELN, attending to the non-negligible fraction of S1-like or S1.8-like
component. This trained ANN could be used to infer optical properties from
X-ray spectra in surveys like eRosita.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Appendix B only

Habitability: CAMELOT 4
During 1988 to 1989 the NASA/USRA Advanced Design Program sponsored research and design efforts aimed at developing habitability criteria and at defining a habitability concept as a useful tool in understanding and evaluating dwellings for prolonged stays in extraterrestrial space. The Circulating Auto sufficient Mars-Earth Luxurious Orbital Transport (CAMELOT) was studied as a case in which the students would try to enhance the quality of life of the inhabitants by applying architectural design methodology. The study proposed 14 habitability criteria considered necessary to fulfill the defined habitability concept, which is that state of equilibrium that results from the interaction between components of the Individual Architecture Mission Complex, which allows a person to sustain physiological homeostatis, adequate performance, and acceptable social relationships. Architecture, design development, refinements and revisions to improve the quality of life, new insights on artificial gravity, form and constitution problems, and the final design concept are covered
Light Sterile Neutrino from extra dimensions and Four-Neutrino Solutions to Neutrino Anomalies
We propose a four-neutrino model which can reconcile the existing data coming
from underground experiments in terms of neutrino oscillations, together with
the hint from the LSND experiment and a possible neutrino contribution to the
hot dark matter of the Universe. It applies the idea that extra compact
dimensions, probed only by gravity and possibly gauge-singlet fields, can lower
the fundamental scales such as the Planck, string or unification scales. Our
fourth light neutrino ( for sterile) is identified with the zero
mode of the Kaluza-Klein states. To first approximation \nu_sterile combines
with the nu_mu in order to form a Dirac neutrino with mass in the eV range
leaving the other two neutrinos massless. The smallness of this mass scale
(suitable for LSND and Hot Dark Matter) arises without appealing neither to a
see-saw mechanism nor to a radiative mechanism, but from the volume factor
associated with the canonical normalization of the wave-function of the bulk
field in the compactified dimensions. % On the other hand the splitting between
\nm and \nu_sterile (atmospheric scale) as well as the mass of the two other
neutrinos (solar mass scale) arise from the violation of the fermion number on
distant branes. We also discuss alternative scenarios involving
flavour-changing interactions. In one of them \ne can be in the electron-volt
range and therefore be probed in beta decay studies.Comment: 12 pages, latex, no figures, title changed, final version to be

Three-Neutrino Mixing after the First Results from K2K and KamLAND
We analyze the impact of the data on long baseline \nu_\mu disappearance from
the K2K experiment and reactor \bar\nu_e disappearance from the KamLAND
experiment on the determination of the leptonic three-generation mixing
parameters. Performing an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric,
reactor and long baseline neutrino data in the context of three-neutrino
oscillations, we determine the presently allowed ranges of masses and mixing
and we consistently derive the allowed magnitude of the elements of the
leptonic mixing matrix. We also quantify the maximum allowed contribution of
\Delta m^2_{21} oscillations to CP-odd and CP-even observables at future long
baseline experiments.Comment: Some typos correcte
Extraction of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes from experimental event rate data
The precise knowledge of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes is a key ingredient
in the interpretation of the results from any atmospheric neutrino experiment.
In the standard atmospheric neutrino data analysis, these fluxes are
theoretical inputs obtained from sophisticated numerical calculations. In this
contribution we present an alternative approach to the determination of the
atmospheric neutrino fluxes based on the direct extraction from the
experimental data on neutrino event rates. The extraction is achieved by means
of a combination of artificial neural networks as interpolants and Monte Carlo
methods.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figs, to appear in the proceedings of the 2nd
