Power Factor Correction for Thyristor Equipment in Glass Industry
Thyristor power controllers are now widely used in the glass industry for controlling furnace temperature. While offering a number of operational advantages, they operate at lagging power factors which require correction for minimum power cost. Harmonic resonance with the utility feed, however, complicate the use of capacitor banks. The nature of harmonic problems is described and the use of inductors to tune capacitor banks below any possible harmonic frequency is demonstrated.The Information Manager Vol. 8 (1) 2008: pp. 22-2
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and The PNPLA3 Gene
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a rapidly emerging worldwide public health concern strongly associated with obesity, insulin resistance/diabetes type 2, and the metabolic syndrome (Younossi et al., 2011). It is the most common cause of liver disease in the world (World Gastro - enterology Organisation [WGO], 2012). Defined as a total liver weight comprised of more than 5% fat, NAFLD can progress from simple fatty liver disease to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis with or without fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, or liver failure resulting in premature death (Levene & Goldin, 2012). The development and progression of NAFLD is influenced by genetic and environmental factors that may have implications for health (Romeo et al., 2008; Romeo et al., 2009; Valenti et al., 2010). A description of NAFLD is provided in this article, with information about the genetic basis of NAFLD and potential implications of genetic health information related to NAFLD. Nurses’ critical role in health promotion, disease prevention, and management of chronic disease in persons with NAFLD also will be discussed
Report of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Hypertension Teaching Seminar organized by the ISH Africa Regional Advisory Group: Maputo, Mozambique, 2016
The International Society of Hypertension (ISH), in fulfilment of its mission of promoting hypertension control and prevention and also of advancing knowledge globally, organizes hypertension teaching seminars or ‘summer schools’ worldwide through the ISH Regional Advisory Groups. In Africa, seven of such seminars have been organized. This is a report of the eighth seminar held in Maputo, Mozambique, April, 2016. The seminar was attended by over 65 participants from 11 African countries. The Faculty consisted of 11 international hypertension experts. The eighth African hypertension seminar was a great success as confirmed by a pre- and post-test questionnaire
The appraisal of transport infrastructure projects in the municipal sphere of government in South Africa, with reference to the city of Tshwane
The annual budget cycle in urban road/transport authorities by implication requires transport infrastructure projects to be ranked in terms of their relative value, to enable project selection by starting from the most deserving proposal. This follows from the fact that the total cost of feasible projects practically always exceeds available funds, signalling the need for some kind of selection protocol. Cost benefit analysis (CBA), when applied in a narrow sense, is not suitable for this purpose as it focuses on economic efficiency only. Attempts to broaden it have been criticized by some scholars. Although the diversity of impacts points to a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) approach, this is considered unscientific in certain quarters; at best, its practical value needs to be demonstrated. In the case of the City of Tshwane (CoT), problems with current project appraisal are evident in that different methods – none of which is defensible – are used, sometimes resulting in rankings that are contradictory.
This thesis therefore attempts the following: (a) to develop a basic approach that combines the best elements of traditional methods; (b) to customize this approach to the specific context and needs of road authorities in the municipal sphere of government, using CoT as an example; and (c) to demonstrate the application of the resulting appraisal framework, utilizing appropriate decision-support software for this purpose.
Recommendations include the following: An appraisal framework should combine CBA and MCA by adopting an overall MCA approach with economic efficiency – focusing on the optimal allocation of scarce resources – as one of the decision criteria. For completeness‟ sake, three additional decision criteria are deemed necessary: equity (focusing on income distribution impacts); sustainability (focusing on environmental impacts); and compatibility (focusing on the alignment of projects with stated goals and objectives). This framework may well apply to road authorities in other spheres of government – the optimum application in each case will depend on the composition of the relevant decision-making team. The inherent nature of project appraisal requires a two-phased approach in all cases: the evaluation of mutually exclusive alternatives, followed by the ranking of independent projects. Dust Dynamics in Compressible MHD Turbulence
We calculate the relative grain-grain motions arising from interstellar
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The MHD turbulence includes both fluid
motions and magnetic fluctuations. While the fluid motions accelerate grains
through hydro-drag, the electromagnetic fluctuations accelerate grains through
resonant interactions. We consider both incompressive (Alfv\'{e}n) and
compressive (fast and slow) MHD modes and use descriptions of MHD turbulence
obtained in Cho & Lazarian (2002). Calculations of grain relative motion are
made for realistic grain charging and interstellar turbulence that is
consistent with the velocity dispersions observed in diffuse gas, including
cutoff of the turbulence from various damping processes. We show that fast
modes dominate grain acceleration, and can drive grains to supersonic
velocities. Grains are also scattered by gyroresonance interactions, but the
scattering is less important than acceleration for grains moving with
sub-Alfv\'{e}nic velocities. Since the grains are preferentially accelerated
with large pitch angles, the supersonic grains will be aligned with long axes
perpendicular to the magnetic field. We compare grain velocities arising from
MHD turbulence with those arising from photoelectric emission, radiation
pressure and H thrust. We show that for typical interstellar conditions
turbulence should prevent these mechanisms from segregating small and large
grains. Finally, gyroresonant acceleration is bound to preaccelerate grains
that are further accelerated in shocks. Grain-grain collisions in the shock may
then contribute to the overabundance of refractory elements in the composition
of galactic cosmic rays.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figure
Detection of new sources of methanol emission at 107 and 108 GHz with the Mopra telescope
A southern hemisphere survey of methanol emission sources in two millimeter
wave transitions has been carried out using the ATNF Mopra millimetre
telescope. Sixteen emission sources have been detected in the 3(1)-4(0)A+
transition of methanol at 107 GHz, including six new sources exhibiting class
II methanol maser emission features. Combining these results with the similar
northern hemisphere survey, a total of eleven 107-GHz methanol masers have been
detected. A survey of the methanol emission in the 0(0)-1(-1)E transition at
108 GHz resulted in the detection of 16 sources; one of them showing maser
characteristics. This is the first methanol maser detected at 108 GHz,
presumably of class II. The results of LVG statistical equilibrium calculations
