Magnetic Susceptibility of the Quark Condensate and Polarization from Chiral Models
We compute the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate and the
polarization of quarks at zero temperature and in a uniform magnetic
background. Our theoretical framework consists of two chiral models that allow
to treat self-consistently the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry: the
linear model coupled to quarks, dubbed quark-meson model, and the
Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We also perform analytic estimates of the same
quantities within the renormalized quark-meson model, both in the regimes of
weak and strong fields. Our numerical results are in agreement with the recent
literature; moreover, we confirm previous Lattice findings, related to the
saturation of the polarization at large fields.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Geometrical bounds on irreversibility in open quantum systems
Clausius inequality has deep implications for reversibility and the arrow of
time. Quantum theory is able to extend this result for closed systems by
inspecting the trajectory of the density matrix on its manifold. Here we show
that this approach can provide an upper and lower bound to the irreversible
entropy production for open quantum systems as well. These provide insights on
the thermodynamics of the information erasure. Limits of the applicability of
our bounds are discussed, and demonstrated in a quantum photonic simulator
Bridging thermodynamics and metrology in non-equilibrium Quantum Thermometry
Single-qubit thermometry presents the simplest tool to measure the
temperature of thermal baths with reduced invasivity. At thermal equilibrium,
the temperature uncertainty is linked to the heat capacity of the qubit,
however the best precision is achieved outside equilibrium condition. Here, we
discuss a way to generalize this relation in a non-equilibrium regime, taking
into account purely quantum effects such as coherence. We support our findings
with an experimental photonic simulation.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Gravitino Dark Matter and Neutrino Masses in Partial Split Supersymmetry
Partial Split Supersymmetry with bilinear R-parity violation allows to
reproduce all neutrino mass and mixing parameters. The viable dark matter
candidate in this model is the gravitino. We study the hypothesis that both
possibilities are true: Partial Split Supersymmetry explains neutrino physics
and that dark matter is actually composed of gravitinos. Since the gravitino
has a small but non-zero decay probability, its decay products could be
observed in astrophysical experiments. Combining bounds from astrophysical
photon spectra with the bounds coming from the mass matrix in the neutrino
sector we derive a stringent upper limit for the allowed gravitino mass. This
mass limit is in good agreement with the results of direct dark matter
searches.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figure
Chiral magnetic effect in the PNJL model
We study the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop
(PNJL model) in the presence of a strong magnetic field and a chiral chemical
potential which mimics the effect of imbalanced chirality due to QCD
instanton and/or sphaleron transitions. Firstly we focus on the properties of
chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement crossover under the strong magnetic
field. Then we discuss the role of on the phase structure. Finally the
chirality charge, electric current, and their susceptibility, which are
relevant to the Chiral Magnetic Effect, are computed in the model.Comment: Some reference added. Minor revisions. One figure added. To appear on

Vapor–Liquid Equilibria of Quaternary Systems of Interest for the Supercritical Antisolvent Process
In the Supercritical Antisolvent process (SAS), the thermodynamic behavior of complex multicomponent systems can influence the particles’ morphology. However, due to the limited thermodynamic data for multicomponent systems, the effect of solutes is often neglected, and the system is considered as pseudo-binary. It has been demonstrated that the presence of a solute can significantly influence the thermodynamic behavior of the system. In particular, when the SAS process is adopted for the production of drug/polymer coprecipitated microparticles, the effect of both the drug and the polymer in the solvent/CO2 mixture should be considered. In this work, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), used as the carrier, and of the liposoluble vitamins menadione (MEN) and α-tocopherol (TOC), as model drugs, was investigated as a deviation from the fundamental thermodynamic behavior of the DMSO/CO2 binary system. Vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) were evaluated at 313 K, with a PVP concentration in the organic solution equal to 20 mg/mL. The effect of the presence of PVP, MEN, and TOC on DMSO/CO2 VLE at 313 K was studied; furthermore, the effect of PVP/MEN and PVP/TOC, at a polymer/drug ratio of 5/1 and 3/1, was determined. Moreover, SAS precipitation experiments were performed at the same polymer/drug ratios using a pressure of 90 bar. Thermodynamic studies revealed significant changes in phase behavior for DMSO/CO2/PVP/TOC and DMSO/CO2/PVP/MEN systems compared to the binary DMSO/CO2 system. From the analysis of the effect of the presence of a single compound on the binary system VLE, it was noted that PVP slightly affected the thermodynamic behavior of the system. In contrast, these effects were more evident for the DMSO/CO2/TOC and DMSO/CO2/MEN systems. SAS precipitation experiments produced PVP/MEN and PVP/TOC microparticles, and the obtained morphology was justified considering the quaternary systems VLE

A Spitzer view of protoplanetary disks in the gamma Velorum cluster
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of stars in the young ~5
Myr gamma Velorum stellar cluster. Combining optical and 2MASS photometry, we
have selected 579 stars as candidate members of the cluster. With the addition
of the Spitzer mid-infrared data, we have identified 5 debris disks around
A-type stars, and 5-6 debris disks around solar-type stars, indicating that the
strong radiation field in the cluster does not completely suppress the
production of planetesimals in the disks of cluster members. However, we find
some evidence that the frequency of circumstellar primordial disks is lower,
and the IR flux excesses are smaller than for disks around stellar populations
with similar ages. This could be evidence for a relatively fast dissipation of
circumstellar dust by the strong radiation field from the highest mass star(s)
in the cluster. Another possibility is that gamma Velorum stellar cluster is
slightly older than reported ages and the the low frequency of primordial disks
reflects the fast disk dissipation observed at ~5 Myr.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal: 32 pages; 11
