The incidence and risk factors for new onset atrial fibrillation in the PROSPER study
Aims Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in older people. It associates with reduced exercise capacity, increased risk of stroke, and mortality. We aimed to determine retrospectively whether pravastatin reduces the incidence of AF and whether any electrocardiographic measures or clinical conditions might be risk factors for its development. Methods and results The PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) was a randomized, double-blind controlled trial that recruited 5804 individuals aged 70-82 years with a history of, or risk factors for, vascular disease. A total of 2891 were allocated to pravastatin and 2913 to placebo; mean follow-up was 3.2 years. Electrocardiograms (ECGs), which were recorded at baseline, annually thereafter, and at run-out, were processed by computer and reviewed manually. In all, 264 of 2912 (9.1%) of the placebo group and 283 of 2888 (9.8%) of the pravastatin-treated group developed AF [hazard ratio 1.08 (0.92,1.28), P = 0.35)]. Multivariate analysis showed that PR and QTc intervals, age, left ventricular hypertrophy, and ST-T abnormalities were related to development of AF after adjustment for many variables including alcohol consumption, which itself was univariately predictive of developing AF. Previous myocardial infarction on the ECG was not a risk factor. A history of vascular disease was strongly linked with developing AF but not diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion Pravastatin does not reduce the incidence of AF in older people at risk of vascular disease, at least in the short-medium term. The two sided parsec scale structure of the Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus in NGC 4278
We present new Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the LINER
galaxy NGC 4278. The observations were taken with the Very Long Baseline Array
(VLBA) and a single antenna of the Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz and 8.4 GHz
and have a linear resolution of <0.1 pc. Our radio data reveal a two sided
structure, with symmetric S-shaped jets emerging from a flat spectrum core. We
fit the jet brightness with gaussian components, which we identify from a
previous observation taken five years before. By comparing the positions of the
components in the two epochs, we measure motions between 0.45 +/- 0.14 and 3.76
+/- 0.65 mas, corresponding to apparent velocities < 0.2c, and to ages in the
range 8.3 - 65.8 years. Assuming that the radio morphology is intrinsically
symmetric and its appearance is governed by Doppler beaming effects, we find
that NGC4278 has mildly relativistic jets (beta ~ 0.75), closely aligned to the
line-of-sight (2 degrees < theta < 4 degrees). Alternatively, the source could
be oriented at a larger angle and asymmetries could be related to the jet
interaction with the surrounding medium. We also present new simultaneous VLA
observations between 1.4 and 43 GHz, and a 5 GHz light curve between 1972 and
2003. The radio spectrum can be fit by a relatively steep power-law (alpha =
0.54). We find significant variability at 5 GHz. All these arguments indicate
that the radiation from NGC 4278 is emitted via the synchrotron process by
relativistic particles accelerated by a supermassive black hole. Despite a much
lower power, this is the same process that takes place in ordinary radio loud

Information relating to the prevalence and destructiveness of diseases of plants has been recorded in various journals and papers ever since the beginning of agriculture in Iowa. Most of these records are specific and valuable; some, however, especially for the early years, are so general as to have little value. In this paper an attempt has been made to summarize available records of the prevalence and destructiveness of the diseases of cereals and flax in Iowa and to interpret the early general reports on the basis of our present knowledge of plant pathology
Diseases of Potatoes in Iowa
It is a well-known fact that potato production in Iowa has decreased since 1895. This raises the question as to the cause of this decline. Many factors contributed to the decrease in potato production, one of which was the destructiveness of various diseases. Many diseases tend to initiate sharp fluctuations in yield and quality, two factors that have much to do with the stability of a given crop. Previous to 1895 there were no well-developed control measures for any of the potato diseases: in fact the causal agencies of many of them were quite unknown. Consequently, as different pathogens became established in the virgin soil they accentuated the annual fluctuation in production. The decline following 1895 warrants study particularly from the viewpoint of the role of diseases. The 1998 Center for Simulation of Dynamic Response in Materials Annual Technical Report
Introduction:
This annual report describes research accomplishments for FY 98 of the Center for Simulation
of Dynamic Response of Materials. The Center is constructing a virtual shock physics facility
in which the full three dimensional response of a variety of target materials can be computed
for a wide range of compressive, tensional, and shear loadings, including those produced by
detonation of energetic materials. The goals are to facilitate computation of a variety of
experiments in which strong shock and detonation waves are made to impinge on targets
consisting of various combinations of materials, compute the subsequent dynamic response
of the target materials, and validate these computations against experimental data
A model of fasciculation and sorting in mixed populations of axons
We extend a recently proposed model (Chaudhuri et al., EPL 87, 20003 (2009))
aiming to describe the formation of fascicles of axons during neural
development. The growing axons are represented as paths of interacting directed
random walkers in two spatial dimensions. To mimic turnover of axons, whole
paths are removed and new walkers are injected with specified rates. In the
simplest version of the model, we use strongly adhesive short-range inter-axon
interactions that are identical for all pairs of axons. We generalize the model
to adhesive interactions of finite strengths and to multiple types of axons
with type-specific interactions. The dynamic steady state is characterized by
the position-dependent distribution of fascicle sizes. With distance in the
direction of axon growth, the mean fascicle size and emergent time scales grow
monotonically, while the degree of sorting of fascicles by axon type has a
maximum at a finite distance. To understand the emergence of slow time scales,
we develop an analytical framework to analyze the interaction between

The molecular genetic analysis of the expanding pachyonychia congenita case collection
BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant keratinizing disorder characterized by severe, painful, palmoplantar keratoderma and nail dystrophy, often accompanied by oral leucokeratosis, cysts and follicular keratosis. It is caused by mutations in one of five keratin genes: KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16 or KRT17. OBJECTIVES: To identify mutations in 84 new families with a clinical diagnosis of PC, recruited by the International Pachyonychia Congenita Research Registry during the last few years. METHODS: Genomic DNA isolated from saliva or peripheral blood leucocytes was amplified using primers specific for the PC-associated keratin genes and polymerase chain reaction products were directly sequenced. RESULTS: Mutations were identified in 84 families in the PC-associated keratin genes, comprising 46 distinct keratin mutations. Fourteen were previously unreported mutations, bringing the total number of different keratin mutations associated with PC to 105. CONCLUSIONS: By identifying mutations in KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16 or KRT17, this study has confirmed, at the molecular level, the clinical diagnosis of PC in these families

Sensitivity of the Brewer-Dobson circulation and polar vortex variability to parameterized nonorographic gravity wave drag in a high-resolution atmospheric model
The role of parametrized nonorographic gravity wave drag (NOGWD) and its seasonal interaction with the resolved wave drag in the stratosphere has been extensively studied in low-resolution (coarser than 1.9 x 2.5 degrees) climate models but is comparatively unexplored in higher-resolution models. Using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Integrated Forecast System at 0.7 x 0.7 degrees resolution, the wave drivers of the Brewer-Dobson circulation are diagnosed and the circulation sensitivity to the NOGW launch flux is explored. NOGWs are found to account for nearly 20% of the lower stratospheric Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar cap downwelling and for less than 10% of the lower-stratospheric tropical upwelling and Northern Hemisphere (NH) polar cap downwelling. Despite these relatively small numbers, there are complex interactions between NOGWD and resolved wave drag, in both polar regions. Seasonal cycle analysis reveals a temporal offset in the resolved and parametrized wave interaction: The NOGWD response to altered source fluxes is largest in mid-winter, while the resolved wave response is largest in the late winter and spring. This temporal offset is especially prominent in the SH. The impact of NOGWD on sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) life-cycles and the final warming date in the SH is also investigated. An increase in NOGWD leads to an increase in SSW frequency, reduction in amplitude and persistence, and an earlier recovery of the stratopause following a SSW event. The SH final warming date is also brought forward when NOGWD is increased. Thus, NOGWD is still found to be a very important parameterization for stratospheric dynamics even in a high-resolution atmospheric model
The brightest OH maser in the sky: a flare of emission in W75 N
A flare of maser radio emission in the OH-line 1665 MHz has been discovered
in the star forming region W75 N in 2003, with the flux density of about 1000
Jy. At the time it was the strongest OH maser detected during the whole history
of observations since the discovery of cosmic masers in 1965. The flare
emission is linearly polarized with a degree of polarization near 100%. A
weaker flare with a flux of 145 Jy was observed in this source in 2000 - 2001,
which was probably a precursor of the powerful flare. Intensity of two other
spectral features has decreased after beginning of the flare. Such variation of
the intensity of maser condensation emission (increasing of one and decreasing
of the other) can be explained by passing of the magneto hydrodynamic shock

Sub-milliarcsecond Imaging of Quasars and AGN
We have used the VLBA at 15 GHz to image the structure of 132 strong compact
AGN and quasars with a resolution better than one milliarcsecond and a dynamic
range typically exceeding 1000 to 1. These observations were made as part of a
program to investigate the sub-parsec structure of quasars and AGN and to study
the changes in their structure with time. Many of the sources included in our
study, particularly those located south of +35 degrees, have not been
previously imaged with milliarcsecond resolution. Each of the sources has been
observed at multiple epochs. In this paper we show images of each of the 132
sources which we have observed. For each source we present data at the epoch
which had the best quality data. The milliarcsecond jets generally appear
one-sided but two-sided structure is often found in lower luminosity radio
galaxies and in high luminosity quasars with gigahertz peaked spectra. Usually
the structure is unresolved along the direction perpendicular to the jet, but a
few sources have broad plumes. In some low luminosity radio galaxies, the
structure appears more symmetric at 2 cm than at long wavelengths. The apparent
long wavelength symmetry in these sources is probably due to absorption by
intervening material. A few sources contain only a single component with any
secondary feature at least a thousand times weaker. We find no obvious
correlation of radio morphology and the detection of gamma-ray emission by
