    Hepatitis C Screening in the Baby Boomer Cohort

    The USPSTF recommends a one-time screening for Hepatitis C, irrespective of prior risk factors, for individuals born between 1945-1965. Many patients in this group may not be aware of this recommendation or understand very much about Hepatitis C infection. This project sought to educate and promote screening among the Baby Boomer cohort at Hinesburg Family Medicine Clinic.     Sunlight reflections from a solar power satellite on solar mirrors should not harm the eyes

    The potential hazard imposed by the reflection of the Sun's image by the solar power satellite (SPS) was examined. In the worst case, where the transmitter is assumed to be a perfect mirror reflecting the Sun's image normal to the atmosphere, the total energy received by the eye would be 3.36 x 10 to the -7th power watts. The eye's optics would blur the 5.6 sec of art image of the transmitter over a disk approximately 6 minutes arc in diameter, reducing the maximum intensity at the retina by 99%. A given cone in the retina would receive even less energy due to the constant random microtremors and microsaccadic movements of the eye muscles which move the retina over an area some 8 minutes of arc in radius, even during steady fixation. Therefore, very conservative estimates show that the reflections from the transmitter could be viewed safety for at least 3.2 hours and that the entire SPS structure could be viewed for a minimum of 1 hour. The solares mirror is briefly considered and is shown to be safe to view for at least 2.4 minutes

With the American Red Cross’ access to fast and affordable communication and this notion in mind, there is potential to develop new recruitment strategies and better methods of ensuring blood donation commitments.     Monodisperse, polymeric microspheres produced by irradiation of slowly thawing frozen drops

    Monodisperse, polymeric microspheres are formed by injecting uniformly shaped droplets of radiation polymerizable monomers, preferably a biocompatible monomer, having covalent binding sites such as hydroxyethylmethacrylate, into a zone, impressing a like charge on the droplet so that they mutually repel each other, spheroidizing the droplets within the zone and collecting the droplets in a pool of cryogenic liquid. As the droplets enter the liquid, they freeze into solid, glassy microspheres, which vaporizes a portion of the cryogenic liquid to form a layer. The like-charged microspheres, suspended within the layer, move to the edge of the vessel holding the pool, are discharged, fall and are collected. The collected microspheres are irradiated while frozen in the cryogenic liquid to form latent free radicals. The frozen microspheres are then slowly thawed to activate the free radicals which polymerize the monomer to form evenly-sized, evenly-shaped, monodisperse polymeric microspheres

    Dental amalgam fillings: An under-investigated source of mercury exposure

    Dental amalgam fillings, which contain about 50% mercury, have been used since the early 19th century. However, their use has been controversial, particularly because they continually release small amounts of mercury. Inorganic mercury is known to be highly toxic, particularly to the nervous system and kidneys, but exposures from amalgam fillings are generally well below those established as toxic. However, uncertainties about threshold concentrations of effect and the nature of any long-term exposure effects remain. Considering the long-standing and widespread use of these fillings, there has been remarkably little investigation of their safety and most epidemiologic studies have been relatively recent. In general, investigations to date have shown little evidence of effects on general chronic disease incidence or mortality. There have been few studies so far of neurodegenerative diseases and results have been equivocal. Assessments of the safety of dental amalgam have mainly been based on studies of occupationally exposed populations. However, the amalgam-exposed population contains a broader, potentially more susceptible, spectrum of people. In that regard, a number of studies of children that have found no evidence of health effects have provided some reassurance
