    An Enhanced Features Extractor for a Portfolio of Constraint Solvers

    Recent research has shown that a single arbitrarily efficient solver can be significantly outperformed by a portfolio of possibly slower on-average solvers. The solver selection is usually done by means of (un)supervised learning techniques which exploit features extracted from the problem specification. In this paper we present an useful and flexible framework that is able to extract an extensive set of features from a Constraint (Satisfaction/Optimization) Problem defined in possibly different modeling languages: MiniZinc, FlatZinc or XCSP. We also report some empirical results showing that the performances that can be obtained using these features are effective and competitive with state of the art CSP portfolio techniques

    We consider a general reinforcement learning problem and show that carefully combining the Bayesian optimal policy and an exploring policy leads to minimax sample-complexity bounds in a very general class of (history-based) environments. We also prove lower bounds and show that the new algorithm displays adaptive behaviour when the environment is easier than worst-case

    MO-ParamILS: A Multi-objective Automatic Algorithm Configuration Framework

    International audienceAutomated algorithm configuration procedures play an increasingly important role in the development and application of algorithms for a wide range of computationally challenging problems. Until very recently, these configuration procedures were limited to optimising a single performance objective, such as the running time or solution quality achieved by the algorithm being configured. However, in many applications there is more than one performance objective of interest. This gives rise to the multi-objective automatic algorithm configuration problem, which involves finding a Pareto set of configurations of a given target algorithm that characterises trade-offs between multiple performance objectives. In this work, we introduce MO-ParamILS, a multi-objective extension of the state-of-the-art single-objective algorithm configuration framework ParamILS, and demonstrate that it produces good results on several challenging bi-objective algorithm configuration scenarios compared to a base-line obtained from using a state-of-the-art single-objective algorithm configurator

    Multi-Instanton Effects in QCD Sum Rules for the Pion

    Multi-instanton contributions to QCD sum rules for the pion are investigated within a framework which models the QCD vacuum as an instanton liquid. It is shown that in singular gauge the sum of planar diagrams in leading order of the 1/Nc1/N_{c} expansion provides similar results as the effective single-instanton contribution. These effects are also analysed in regular gauge. Our findings confirm that at large distances the correlator functions are more adequately described in the singular gauge rather than in the regular one.Comment: 11 pages RevTeX is use

    Experimental field cultivation of in vitro propagated high-yield varieties of Tropaeolum majus L.

    About 10,000 mass propagated clonal progenies of the medicinal plant Tropaeolum majus L. had been cultivated in an experimental field trial to analyze the large scale cultivation of nasturtium-plants for pharmaceutical utilization. The glucotropaeolin contents of the eight Tropaeolum-clones, which had been established and propagated by in vitro-culture techniques, had been monitored and compared with unselected plants from commercial seed mixtures (sm-plants). Whereas the intra-clonal variation of the glucosinolate levels was significantly lower than the variability of the sm-plants, the glucotropaeolin content in the clonal progenies was markedly lower than in both, in the clonal mother plants as well as in the sm-plants. The proposed explanation for this phenomenon is based on the fact that the genetically identical cloned plants reveal only a very narrow phenotypical amplitude, which accordingly resulted in designated glucosinolate levels due to the certain environmental situations. However, under changing conditions, the corresponding glucotropaeolin content might be much lower. In contrast, the sm-plants reveal – due to the strong genetic heterogeneity – a much broader phenotypical amplitude of their physiological characteristics. Consequently, under changing growth conditions various individual plants may accumulate high amounts of glucotropaeolin. These coherences explain both, firstly, the finding that the clonal mother plants revealed very high glucotropaeolin levels under the certain – maybe spatial limited cultivation conditions – whereas their progenies accumulate far less glucosinolates; and secondly, that the average content in the sm-plants is higher than the mean content of the clonal progenies.These data suggest that the much cheaper growing of nasturtium plants from seeds should be favoured over the more sophisticated in vitro-propagation techniques. Anyhow, for industrial farming there is one great advantage for the usage of in vitro generated Tropaeolum plants: the selected, high glucosinolate-nasturtium clones all reveal a compact growth with short tendrils. Therefore, the mechanical harvest of the corresponding clonal progenies, is quite unproblematic in comparison to the difficile harvest of sm-plants, most exhibiting tendrils of several meters

    Accurate Hartree-Fock energy of extended systems using large Gaussian basis sets

    Calculating highly accurate thermochemical properties of condensed matter via wave function-based approaches (such as e.g. Hartree-Fock or hybrid functionals) has recently attracted much interest. We here present two strategies providing accurate Hartree-Fock energies for solid LiH in a large Gaussian basis set and applying periodic boundary conditions. The total energies were obtained using two different approaches, namely a supercell evaluation of Hartree-Fock exchange using a truncated Coulomb operator and an extrapolation toward the full-range Hartree-Fock limit of a Pad\'e fit to a series of short-range screened Hartree-Fock calculations. These two techniques agreed to significant precision. We also present the Hartree-Fock cohesive energy of LiH (converged to within sub-meV) at the experimental equilibrium volume as well as the Hartree-Fock equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus.Comment: 7.5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Thermoreversible gels for the encapsulation of macrophages: evaluation of polymer type on rheology and cytocompatibility

This research aimed to determine the biocompatibility of specific thermoreversible gels for immunocompetent cell models containing ImmuPHAGETM, human alveolar macrophage-like cells. Four polymers were selected based on their transition temperatures, including three commercially available pharmaceutical excipients, namely poloxamer 407, soluplus, and methylcellulose. The fourth system, poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide), was synthesised in-house. Initially, the phase behaviour of these four polymers was evaluated visually by warming the polymer solutions and determining the state of the solution by vial inversion. Subsequently, a combination of rheological measurements was employed to compare the properties of these thermoreversible gels in culture media. The physical characterisation was followed by conducting cytocompatibility tests using human alveolar macrophages to assess their suitability as a scaffold for cell culture in vitro and to determine the cell response to different culturing environments. The study concluded that methylcellulose is the most promising and cost-effective material worth further exploration as a responsive matrix for immune cell encapsulation.     Electron correlation in C_(4N+2) carbon rings: aromatic vs. dimerized structures

    The electronic structure of C_(4N+2) carbon rings exhibits competing many-body effects of Huckel aromaticity, second-order Jahn-Teller and Peierls instability at large sizes. This leads to possible ground state structures with aromatic, bond angle or bond length alternated geometry. Highly accurate quantum Monte Carlo results indicate the existence of a crossover between C_10 and C_14 from bond angle to bond length alternation. The aromatic isomer is always a transition state. The driving mechanism is the second-order Jahn-Teller effect which keeps the gap open at all sizes.Comment: Submitted for publication: 4 pages, 3 figures. Corrected figure

    A Parameter Study of Classical Be Star Disk Models Constrained by Optical Interferometry

    We have computed theoretical models of circumstellar disks for the classical Be stars κ\kappa Dra, β\beta Psc, and υ\upsilon Cyg. Models were constructed using a non-LTE radiative transfer code developed by \citet{sig07} which incorporates a number of improvements over previous treatments of the disk thermal structure, including a realistic chemical composition. Our models are constrained by direct comparison with long baseline optical interferometric observations of the Hα\alpha emitting regions and by contemporaneous Hα\alpha line profiles. Detailed comparisons of our predictions with Hα\alpha interferometry and spectroscopy place very tight constraints on the density distributions for these circumstellar disks.Comment: 10 figures,28 pages, accepted by Ap
