Characterization of Si/Si_(1-y)C_y superlattices grown by surfactant assisted molecular beam epitaxy
Si/Si_(0.97)C_(0.03) superlattices grown on Si(001) substrates by Sb surfactant assisted molecular beam epitaxy are characterized by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution x‐ray diffraction. The RHEED shows that, in the absence of Sb, the growth front roughens during Si_(0.97)C_(0.03) growth and smooths during subsequent Si growth. In contrast, when Sb is present, the growth front remains smooth throughout the growth. This observation is confirmed by cross‐sectional TEM, which reveals that for samples grown without the use of Sb, the Si/Si_(0.97)C_(0.03) interfaces (Si_(0.97)C_(0.03) on Si) are much more abrupt than the Si_(0.97)C_(0.03)/Si interfaces. In the case of Sb assisted growth, there is no observable difference in abruptness between the two types of interfaces. Atomic force microscopy micrographs of the Si_(0.97)C_(0.03) surface reveal features that could be the source of the roughness observed by RHEED and TEM
Sb-surfactant-mediated growth of Si/Si1–yCy superlattices by molecular-beam epitaxy
Si/Si0.97C0.03 superlattices were grown on Si(001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to study the use of Sb as a surfactant during Si1–yCy growth. In situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) shows that while carbon easily disrupts the two-dimensional growth of homoepitaxial Si, such disruption is suppressed for layers grown on Sb-terminated Si(001) surfaces. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that for samples grown without the use of Sb, the Si/Si0.97C0.03 interfaces (Si0.97C0.03 on Si) were much more abrupt than Si0.97C0.03/Si interfaces. In the case of Sb-mediated growth, differences in abruptness between the two types of interfaces were not readily observable

representation of qubits which allows for an easy geometric and analytical

Large Magnetic Fields and Motions of OH Masers in W75 N
We report on a second epoch of VLBA observations of the 1665 and 1667 MHz OH
masers in the massive star-forming region W75 N. We find evidence to confirm
the existence of very strong (~40 mG) magnetic fields near source VLA 2. The
masers near VLA 2 are dynamically distinct and include a very bright spot
apparently moving at 50 km/s relative to those around VLA 1. This fast-moving
spot may be an example of a rare class of OH masers seen in outflows in
star-forming regions. Due to the variability of these masers and the rapidity
of their motions, tracking these motions will require multiple observations
over a significantly shorter time baseline than obtained here. Proper motions
of the masers near VLA 1 are more suggestive of streaming along magnetized
shocks rather than Keplerian rotation in a disk. The motions of the easternmost
cluster of masers in W75 N (B) may be tracing slow expansion around an unseen

Critical Casimir interaction of ellipsoidal colloids with a planar wall
Based on renormalization group concepts and explicit mean field calculations
we study the universal contribution to the effective force and torque acting on
an ellipsoidal colloidal particle which is dissolved in a critical fluid and is
close to a homogeneous planar substrate. At the same closest distance between
the substrate and the surface of the particle, the ellipsoidal particle prefers
an orientation parallel to the substrate and the magnitude of the fluctuation
induced force is larger than if the orientation of the particle is
perpendicular to the substrate. The sign of the critical torque acting on the
ellipsoidal particle depends on the type of boundary conditions for the order
parameter at the particle and substrate surfaces, and on the pivot with respect
to which the particle rotates
Validity and practical utility of accelerometry for the measurement of in-hand physical activity in horses
Background:
Accelerometers are valid, practical and reliable tools for the measurement of habitual physical activity (PA). Quantification of PA in horses is desirable for use in research and clinical settings. The objective of this study was to evaluate a triaxial accelerometer for objective measurement of PA in the horse by assessment of their practical utility and validity.
Horses were recruited to establish both the optimal site of accelerometer attachment and questionnaire designed to explore owner acceptance. Validity and cut-off values were obtained by assessing PA at various gaits. Validation study- 20 horses wore the accelerometer while being filmed for 10 min each of rest, walking and trotting and 5 mins of canter work. Practical utility study- five horses wore accelerometers on polls and withers for 18 h; compliance and relative data losses were quantified.
Results:
Accelerometry output differed significantly between the four PA levels (P <0•001) for both wither and poll placement. For withers placement, ROC analyses found optimal sensitivity and specificity at a cut-off of <47 counts per minute (cpm) for rest (sensitivity 99.5 %, specificity 100 %), 967–2424 cpm for trotting (sensitivity 96.7 %, specificity 100 %) and ≥2425 cpm for cantering (sensitivity 96.0 %, specificity 97.0 %). Attachment at the poll resulted in optimal sensitivity and specificity at a cut-off of <707 counts per minute (cpm) for rest (sensitivity 97.5 %, specificity 99.6 %), 1546–2609 cpm for trotting (sensitivity 90.33 %, specificity 79.25 %) and ≥2610 cpm for cantering (sensitivity 100 %, specificity 100 %) In terms of practical utility, accelerometry was well tolerated and owner acceptance high.
Conclusion:
Accelerometry data correlated well with varying levels of in-hand equine activity. The use of accelerometers is a valid method for objective measurement of controlled PA in the horse
The Star Clusters in the Starburst Irregular Galaxy NGC 1569
We examine star clusters in the irregular, starburst galaxy NGC 1569 from HST
images. In addition to the two known super star clusters, we identify 45 other
clusters that are compact but resolved. Integrated UVI colors of the clusters
span a large range, and suggest that ages range from 3 Myrs to 1 Gyr. However,
most of the clusters were formed at the tail end of the recent starburst.
Numerous clusters in addition to the know super star clusters are similar in
luminosity to a small globular cluster. We examined the radial surface
brightness of four of the clusters. Their half-light radii and core radii are
in the range observed in present-day globular clusters. Therefore, conditions
that produced the recent starburst have also been those necessary for producing
compact, bright star clusters.
We examine resolved stars in the outer parts of the two super star clusters.
Cluster A is dominated by bright blue stars with a small population of red
supergiants. Sub-components A1 and A2 have similar colors and a two-dimensional
color map does not offer evidence that one component is dominated by red
supergiants and the other not. The contradiction of the presence of red super-
giants with Wolf-Rayet stars may instead not be a contradiction at all since
there coexistence in a coeval population is not inconsistent with the evolution
of massive stars. Cluster B is dominated by red supergiants, and this is
confirmed by the presence of the stellar CO absorption feature in an integrated
spectrum. The various age indicators are consistent with a picture in which
cluster B is of order 10--20 Myrs old, and cluster A is >4-5 Myrs old.Comment: To be published in AJ, November 200
Re-entrant melting and freezing in a model system of charged colloids
We studied the phase behavior of charged and sterically stabilized colloids
using confocal microscopy in a less polar solvent (dielectric constant 5.4).
Upon increasing the colloid volume fraction we found a transition from a fluid
to a body centered cubic crystal at 0.0415+/-0.0005, followed by re-entrant
melting at 0.1165+/-0.0015. A second crystal of different symmetry, random
hexagonal close-packed, was formed at a volume fraction around 0.5, similar to
that of hard spheres. We attribute the intriguing phase behavior to particle
interactions that depend strongly on volume fraction, mainly due to changes in
the colloid charge. In this low polarity system the colloids acquire charge
through ion adsorption. The low ionic strength leads to fewer ions per colloid
at elevated volume fractions and consequently a density-dependent colloid

The Star Clusters in the Irregular Galaxy NGC 4449
We examine the star clusters in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. We use a
near-infrared spectrum and broad-band images taken with the HST to place a
limit of 8--15 Myrs on the age of the bright central ojbect in NGC 4449. Its
luminosity and size suggest that it is comparable to young super star clusters.
However, there is a peculiar nucleated-bar structure at the center of this star
cluster, and we suggest that this structure is debris from the interaction that
has produced the counter-rotating gas systems and extended gas streamers in the
galaxy.
From the images we identify 60 other candidate compact star clusters in NGC
4449. Fourteen of these could be background elliptical galaxies or old globular
star clusters. Of the star clusters, three, in addition to the central object,
are potentially super star clusters, and many others are comparable to the
populous clusters found in the LMC. The star clusters span a large range in
ages with no obvious peak in cluster formation that might be attributed to the

Time Course of Changes in Peripheral Blood Gene Expression During Medication Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder.
Changes in gene expression (GE) during antidepressant treatment may increase understanding of the action of antidepressant medications and serve as biomarkers of efficacy. GE changes in peripheral blood are desirable because they can be assessed easily on multiple occasions during treatment. We report here on GE changes in 68 individuals who were treated for 8 weeks with either escitalopram alone, or escitalopram followed by bupropion. GE changes were assessed after 1, 2, and 8 weeks of treatment, with significant changes observed in 156, 121, and 585 peripheral blood gene transcripts, respectively. Thirty-one transcript changes were shared between the 1- and 8-week time points (seven upregulated, 24 downregulated). Differences were detected between the escitalopram- and bupropion-treated subjects, although there was no significant association between GE changes and clinical outcome. A subset of 18 genes overlapped with those previously identified as differentially expressed in subjects with MDD compared with healthy control subjects. There was statistically significant overlap between genes differentially expressed in the current and previous studies, with 10 genes overlapping in at least two previous studies. There was no enrichment for genes overexpressed in nervous system cell types, but there was a trend toward enrichment for genes in the WNT/β-catenin pathway in the anterior thalamus; three genes in this pathway showed differential expression in the present and in three previous studies. Our dataset and other similar studies will provide an important source of information about potential biomarkers of recovery and for potential dysregulation of GE in MDD
