Short- and medium-term outcomes of accelerated infant growth in a Hong Kong Chinese birth cohort.
1. In a large, population representative,Chinese birth cohort, higher birth weight and rapid growth, particularly at 0-3 months, were associated with higher body mass index (BMI) at 7 years. 2. Boys born heavy who had grown fast had the highest BMI, but rapid growth had the largest impact in lighter-born boys. 3. Rapid growth at 0-3 months or 3-12 months was not associated with a compensatory lower risk of serious infectious morbidity. 4. The ability to grow fast may be an embodiment of good health status, rather than fast growth being causally protective.published_or_final_versio
Hydrodynamics of a 5D Einstein-dilaton black hole solution and the corresponding BPS state
We apply the potential reconstruction approach to generate a series of
asymptotically AdS (aAdS) black hole solutions, with a self-interacting bulk
scalar field. Based on the method, we reproduce the pure AdS solution as a
consistency check and we also generate a simple analytic 5D black hole
solution. We then study various aspects of this solution, such as temperature,
entropy density and conserved charges. Furthermore, we study the hydrodynamics
of this black hole solution in the framework of fluid/gravity duality, e.g. the
ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density. In a degenerate case of
the 5D black hole solution, we find that the c function decreases monotonically
from UV to IR as expected. Finally, we investigate the stability of the
degenerate solution by studying the bosonic functional energy of the gravity
and the Witten-Nester energy . We confirm that the degenerate solution
is a BPS domain wall solution. The corresponding superpotential and the
solution of the killing spinor equation are found explicitly.Comment: V2: 23 pages, no figure, minor changes, typos corrected, new

Acoustic black holes for relativistic fluids
We derive a new acoustic black hole metric from the Abelian Higgs model. In
the non-relativistic limit, while the Abelian Higgs model becomes the
Ginzburg-Landau model, the metric reduces to an ordinary Unruh type. We
investigate the possibility of using (type I and II) superconductors as the
acoustic black holes. We propose to realize experimental acoustic black holes
by using spiral vortices solutions from the Navier-stokes equation in the
non-relativistic classical fluids.Comment: 16 pages. typos corrected, contents expande
Necessary and sufficient conditions of solution uniqueness in minimization
This paper shows that the solutions to various convex minimization
problems are \emph{unique} if and only if a common set of conditions are
satisfied. This result applies broadly to the basis pursuit model, basis
pursuit denoising model, Lasso model, as well as other models that
either minimize or impose the constraint , where
is a strictly convex function. For these models, this paper proves that,
given a solution and defining I=\supp(x^*) and s=\sign(x^*_I),
is the unique solution if and only if has full column rank and there
exists such that and for . This
condition is previously known to be sufficient for the basis pursuit model to
have a unique solution supported on . Indeed, it is also necessary, and
applies to a variety of other models. The paper also discusses ways to
recognize unique solutions and verify the uniqueness conditions numerically.Comment: 6 pages; revised version; submitte
Analytical study on holographic superconductors in external magnetic field
We investigate the holographic superconductors immersed in an external
magnetic field by using the analytical approach. We obtain the spatially
dependent condensate solutions in the presence of the magnetism and find
analytically that the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation
given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We observe analytically the reminiscent of
the Meissner effect where the magnetic field expels the condensate. Extending
to the D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes, we examine the influence
given by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the condensation. Different from the
positive coupling, we find that the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling enhances the
condensation when the external magnetism is not strong enough.Comment: revised version, to appear in JHE
Hedgehog/notch-induced premature gliogenesis represents a new disease mechanism for Hirschsprung disease in mice and humans
Hirschsprung (HSCR) disease is a complex genetic disorder attributed to a failure of the enteric neural crest cells (ENCCs) to form ganglia in the hindgut. Hedgehog and Notch are implicated in mediating proliferation and differentiation of ENCCs. Nevertheless, how these signaling molecules may interact to mediate gut colonization by ENCCs and contribute to a primary etiology for HSCR are not known. Here, we report our pathway- based epistasis analysis of data generated by a genome-wide association study on HSCR disease, which indicates that specific genotype constellations of Patched (PTCH1) (which encodes a receptor for Hedgehog) and delta-like 3 (DLL3) (which encodes a receptor for Notch) SNPs confer higher risk to HSCR. Importantly, deletion of Ptch1 in mouse ENCCs induced robust Dll1 expression and activation of the Notch pathway, leading to premature gliogenesis and reduction of ENCC progenitors in mutant bowels. Dll1 integrated Hedgehog and Notch pathways to coordinate neuronal and glial cell differentiation during enteric nervous system development. In addition, Hedgehog-mediated gliogenesis was found to be highly conserved, such that Hedgehog was consistently able to promote gliogenesis of human neural crest-related precursors. Collectively, we defined PTCH1 and DLL3 as HSCR susceptibility genes and suggest that Hedgehog/Notch-induced premature gliogenesis may represent a new disease mechanism for HSCR.published_or_final_versio
The Beta Ansatz: A Tale of Two Complex Structures
Brane tilings, sometimes called dimer models, are a class of bipartite graphs on a torus which encode the gauge theory data of four-dimensional SCFTs dual to D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. An efficient way of encoding this information exploits the theory of dessin dâenfants, expressing the structure in terms of a permutation triple, which is in turn related to a Belyi pair, namely a holomorphic map from a torus to a P1 with three marked points. The procedure of a-maximization, in the context of isoradial embeddings of the dimer, also associates a complex structure to the torus, determined by the R-charges in the SCFT, which can be compared with the Belyi complex structure. Algorithms for the explicit construction of the Belyi pairs are described in detail. In the case of orbifolds, these algorithms are related to the construction of covers of elliptic curves, which exploits the properties of WeierstraĂ elliptic functions. We present a counter example to a previous conjecture identifying the complex structure of the Belyi curve to the complex structure associated with R-charges
A child presenting with acute renal failure secondary to a high dose of indomethacin: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Acute renal failure caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs administered at therapeutic doses is generally mild, non-anuric and transitory. There are no publications on indomethacin toxicity secondary to high doses in children. The aim of this article is to describe acute renal failure secondary to a high dose of indomethacin in a child and to review an error in a supervised drug prescription and administration system.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>Due to a medication error, a 20-day-old infant in the postoperative period of surgery for Fallot's tetralogy received a dose of 10 mg/kg of indomethacin, 50 to 100 times higher than the therapeutic dose. The child presented with acute, oligo-anuric renal failure requiring treatment with continuous venovenous renal replacement therapy, achieving complete recovery of renal function with no sequelae.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In order to reduce medication errors in critically ill children, it is necessary to develop a supervised drug prescription and administration system, with controls at various levels.</p
