    Gravity-assist trajectories to Venus, Mars, and the ice giants: Mission design with human and robotic applications

    Gravity-assist trajectories to Uranus and Neptune are found (with the allowance of impulsive maneuvers using chemical propulsion) for launch dates ranging from 2024 to 2038 for Uranus and 2020 to 2070 for Neptune. Solutions are found using a patched conic model with analytical ephemeris via the Satellite Tour Design Program (STOUR), originally developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Delivered payload mass is computed for all solutions for select launch vehicles, and attractive solutions are identified as those that deliver a specified amount of payload mass into orbit at the target body in minimum time. The best cases for each launch year are cataloged for orbiter missions to Uranus and Neptune. Solutions with sufficient delivered payload for a multi-planet mission (e.g. sending a probe to Saturn on the way to delivering an orbiter at Uranus) become available when the Space Launch System (SLS) launch vehicle is employed. A set of possible approach trajectories are modeled at the target planet to assess what (if any) adjustments are needed for ring avoidance, and to determine the probe entry conditions. Mars free-return trajectories are found with an emphasis on short flight times for application to near-term human flyby missions (similar to that of Inspiration Mars). Venus free-returns are also investigated and proposed as an alternative to a human Mars flyby mission. Attractive Earth-Mars free-return opportunities are identified that use an intermediate Venus flyby. One such opportunity, in 2021, has been adopted by the Inspiration Mars Foundation as a backup to the currently considered 2018 Mars free-return opportunity. Methods to establish spacecraft into Earth-Mars cycler trajectories are also investigated to reduce the propellant cost required to inject a 95-metric ton spacecraft into a cycler orbit. The establishment trajectories considered use either a V-infinity leveraging maneuver or low thrust. The V-infinity leveraging establishment trajectories are validated using patched conics via the STOUR program. Establishment trajectories that use low-thrust were investigated with particular focus on validating the patched-conic based solutions at instances where Earth encounter times are not negligible

    Gravity-Assist Trajectories to the Ice Giants: An Automated Method to Catalog Mass- Or Time-Optimal Solutions

    This work presents an automated method of calculating mass (or time) optimal gravity-assist trajectories without a priori knowledge of the flyby-body combination. Since gravity assists are particularly crucial for reaching the outer Solar System, we use the Ice Giants, Uranus and Neptune, as example destinations for this work. Catalogs are also provided that list the most attractive trajectories found over launch dates ranging from 2024 to 2038. The tool developed to implement this method, called the Python EMTG Automated Trade Study Application (PEATSA), iteratively runs the Evolutionary Mission Trajectory Generator (EMTG), a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in-house trajectory optimization tool. EMTG finds gravity-assist trajectories with impulsive maneuvers using a multiple-shooting structure along with stochastic methods (such as monotonic basin hopping) and may be run with or without an initial guess provided. PEATSA runs instances of EMTG in parallel over a grid of launch dates. After each set of runs completes, the best results within a neighborhood of launch dates are used to seed all other cases in that neighborhood-allowing the solutions across the range of launch dates to improve over each iteration. The results here are compared against trajectories found using a grid-search technique, and PEATSA is found to outperform the grid-search results for most launch years considered

    Global, Multi-Objective Trajectory Optimization With Parametric Spreading

    Mission design problems are often characterized by multiple, competing trajectory optimization objectives. Recent multi-objective trajectory optimization formulations enable generation of globally-optimal, Pareto solutions via a multi-objective genetic algorithm. A byproduct of these formulations is that clustering in design space can occur in evolving the population towards the Pareto front. This clustering can be a drawback, however, if parametric evaluations of design variables are desired. This effort addresses clustering by incorporating operators that encourage a uniform spread over specified design variables while maintaining Pareto front representation. The algorithm is demonstrated on a Neptune orbiter mission, and enhanced multidimensional visualization strategies are presented

    Adopting Unmanned Flight Operations into Controlled Airspace

    Unmanned aircraft activity is becoming more common within the National Airspace System (NAS) and is expected to dominate the NAS in the near future. Specific procedures for adopting unmanned aircraft into the National Airspace System (NAS). A variation of the Military Grid Reference System was developed and digitally overlaid onto the radar display. To incorporate this grid system, a customized flight plan database was created for the storage of operator submitted flight plans. Instead of verbal communication, a computer chat system is used for communication because of the low altitude operations in the field. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has made UAS integration a top priority as they projected that the UAS market will reach 7 million systems by 2020. The JUAT is in the process of developing a conclusive solution that will help to safely adopt UAS

    Interplanetary Trajectory Design for NASA's Common Probe Study

    The Galileo Probe, Pioneer-Venus probes, and SPRITE concept all share a number of common characteristics. They all follow a similar entry and descent sequence, using an aeroshell to protect against entry environments, and parachutes to aid in extrusion and descent speed control of the descent vehicle containing the science instruments. The descent vehicles all contained similar instruments (e.g. mass spectrometers and atmosphere structure sensors), and data was either relayed back to a carrier spacecraft (Galileo Probe, SPRITE) or transmitted direct to Earth (Pioneer-Venus). Based on these similar characteristics, NASA initiated a study to investigate a common probe' that might be designed to perform similar science in a variety of planetary environments. This concept would leverage a common aeroshell design, and descent vehicle designs that could be made as similar as possible (the primary exception being that Venus will require a pressure vessel due to the extreme pressures and temperatures seen in the lower portion of the descent). To support the Common Probe study, GSFC and JPL performed a series of interplanetary trajectory analyses to help develop the mission designs for Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Primary considerations in the trajectory modeling included: a maximum of 12-year time of flight (for outer planet destinations), generation of both steep and shallow entry trajectories to each destination (where steep and shallow resulted in approximately 150 g and 50 g peak deceleration during entry at each location), and consideration of the data relay. Gravity assists and trajectories with low delta-V requirements (typically much less than 500 m/s) were also incorporated into the design process to enable launch on existing vehicles such as the Atlas V

    Demonstrating high-precision photometry with a CubeSat: ASTERIA observations of 55 Cancri e

    ASTERIA (Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research In Astrophysics) is a 6U CubeSat space telescope (10 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm, 10 kg). ASTERIA's primary mission objective was demonstrating two key technologies for reducing systematic noise in photometric observations: high-precision pointing control and high-stabilty thermal control. ASTERIA demonstrated 0.5 arcsecond RMS pointing stability and ±\pm10 milliKelvin thermal control of its camera payload during its primary mission, a significant improvement in pointing and thermal performance compared to other spacecraft in ASTERIA's size and mass class. ASTERIA launched in August 2017 and deployed from the International Space Station (ISS) November 2017. During the prime mission (November 2017 -- February 2018) and the first extended mission that followed (March 2018 - May 2018), ASTERIA conducted opportunistic science observations which included collection of photometric data on 55 Cancri, a nearby exoplanetary system with a super-Earth transiting planet. The 55 Cancri data were reduced using a custom pipeline to correct CMOS detector column-dependent gain variations. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach was used to simultaneously detrend the photometry using a simple baseline model and fit a transit model. ASTERIA made a marginal detection of the known transiting exoplanet 55 Cancri e (2\sim2~\Rearth), measuring a transit depth of 374±170374\pm170 ppm. This is the first detection of an exoplanet transit by a CubeSat. The successful detection of super-Earth 55 Cancri e demonstrates that small, inexpensive spacecraft can deliver high-precision photometric measurements.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures. Accepted in A

    c-di-GMP modulates type IV MSHA pilus retraction and surface attachment in Vibrio cholerae.

    Biofilm formation by Vibrio cholerae facilitates environmental persistence, and hyperinfectivity within the host. Biofilm formation is regulated by 3',5'-cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) and requires production of the type IV mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) pilus. Here, we show that the MSHA pilus is a dynamic extendable and retractable system, and its activity is directly controlled by c-di-GMP. The interaction between c-di-GMP and the ATPase MshE promotes pilus extension, whereas low levels of c-di-GMP correlate with enhanced retraction. Loss of retraction facilitated by the ATPase PilT increases near-surface roaming motility, and impairs initial surface attachment. However, prolonged retraction upon surface attachment results in reduced MSHA-mediated surface anchoring and increased levels of detachment. Our results indicate that c-di-GMP directly controls MshE activity, thus regulating MSHA pilus extension and retraction dynamics, and modulating V. cholerae surface attachment and colonization

    Characterization of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) DRB Exon 2 and DRA Exon 3 Fragments in a Primary Terrestrial Rabies Vector (Procyon lotor)

    The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) presents a unique system to explore links between genetic diversity and pathogens, as diversity within MHC is maintained in part by pathogen driven selection. While the majority of wildlife MHC studies have investigated species that are of conservation concern, here we characterize MHC variation in a common and broadly distributed species, the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor). Raccoons host an array of broadly distributed wildlife diseases (e.g., canine distemper, parvovirus and raccoon rabies virus) and present important human health risks as they persist in high densities and in close proximity to humans and livestock. To further explore how genetic variation influences the spread and maintenance of disease in raccoons we characterized a fragment of MHC class II DRA exon 3 (250bp) and DRB exon 2 (228 bp). MHC DRA was found to be functionally monomorphic in the 32 individuals screened; whereas DRB exon 2 revealed 66 unique alleles among the 246 individuals screened. Between two and four alleles were observed in each individual suggesting we were amplifying a duplicated DRB locus. Nucleotide differences between DRB alleles ranged from 1 to 36 bp (0.4–15.8% divergence) and translated into 1 to 21 (1.3–27.6% divergence) amino acid differences. We detected a significant excess of nonsynonymous substitutions at the peptide binding region (P = 0.005), indicating that DRB exon 2 in raccoons has been influenced by positive selection. These data will form the basis of continued analyses into the spatial and temporal relationship of the raccoon rabies virus and the immunogenetic response in its primary host

    Overview of Phobos/Deimos Regolith Ion Sample Mission (PRISM) Concept

    Far more definitive information on composition is required to resolve the question of origin for the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. Current infrared spectra of the objects are inconclusive due to the lack of strong diagnostic features.Definitive compositional measurements of Phobos could be obtained using in-situ X-ray, gamma-ray, or neutronspectroscopy or collecting and returning samples to Earth for analysis. We have proposed, in lieu of those methods, toderive Phobos and Deimos compositional data from secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurements by calibratingthe instrument to elemental abundance measurements made for known samples in the laboratory. We describe thePhobos/Deimos Regolith Ion Sample Mission (PRISM) concept here. PRISM utilizes a high-resolution TOF plasma composition analyzer to make SIMS measurements by observing the sputtered species from various locations of the moons' surfaces. In general, the SIMS technique and ion mass spectrometers complement and expand quadrupole mass spectrometer measurements by collecting ions that have been energized to higher energies, 50-100 eV, and making measurements at very low densities and pressures. Furthermore, because the TOF technique accepts all masses all the time,it obtains continuous measurements and does not require stepping through masses. The instrument would draw less than10 W and weigh less than 5 kg. The spacecraft, nominally a radiation-hardened 12U CubeSat, would use a low-thrust SolarElectric Propulsion system to send it on a two-year journey to Mars, where it would co-orbit with Deimos and then Phobo
