NOAO fundamental plane survey II: Age and metallicity along the red sequence from line-strength data
We present spectroscopic line-strength data for 4097 red-sequence galaxies in 93 low-redshift galaxy clusters and use these to investigate variations in average stellar populations as a function of galaxy mass. Our analysis includes an improved treatment of nebular emission contamination, which affects 10% of the sample galaxies. Using the stellar population models of D. Thomas and collaborators, we simultaneously fit 12 observed line-strength relations in terms of common underlying trends of age, [Z/H] (total metallicity), and [/Fe] (-element enhancement). We find that the observed line-strength relations can be explained only if higher mass red-sequence galaxies are, on average, older, more metal-rich, and more -enhanced than lower mass galaxies. Quantitatively, the scaling relations are age0.59±0.13, Z/H0.53±0.08, and /Fe0.31±0.06, where the errors reflect the range obtained using different subsets of indices. Our conclusions are not strongly dependent on which Balmer lines are used as age indicators. The derived age- relation is such that if the largest (400 km s-1) galaxies formed their stars 13 Gyr ago, then the mean age of low-mass (50 km s-1) objects is only 4 Gyr. The data also suggest a large spread in age at the low-mass end of the red sequence, with 68% of the galaxies having ages between 2 and 8 Gyr. We conclude that although the stars in giant red galaxies in clusters formed early, most of the galaxies at the faint end joined the red sequence only at recent epochs. This "downsizing" trend is in good qualitative agreement with observations of the red sequence at higher redshifts but is not predicted by semianalytic models of galaxy formation
Power spectrum of many impurities in a d-wave superconductor
Recently the structure of the measured local density of states power spectrum
of a small area of the \BSCCO (BSCCO) surface has been interpreted in terms of
peaks at an "octet" of scattering wave vectors determined assuming weak,
noninterfering scattering centers. Using analytical arguments and numerical
solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we discuss how the
interference between many impurities in a d-wave superconductor alters this
scenario. We propose that the peaks observed in the power spectrum are not the
features identified in the simpler analyses, but rather "background" structures
which disperse along with the octet vectors. We further consider how our
results constrain the form of the actual disorder potential found in this

The Energy-dependent Checkerboard Patterns in Cuprate Superconductors
Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments [J.
E. Hoffman {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002); K. McElroy {\it et
al.}, Nature (to be published)], we investigate the real space local density of
states (LDOS) induced by weak disorder in a d-wave superconductor. We first
present the energy dependent LDOS images around a single weak defect at several
energies, and then point out that the experimentally observed checkerboard
pattern in the LDOS could be understood as a result of quasiparticle
interferences by randomly distributed defects. It is also shown that the
checkerboard pattern oriented along to the Cu-O bonds at low energies
would transform to that oriented parallel to the Cu-O bonds at higher energies.

A forage-only diet alters the metabolic response of horses in training
Most athletic horses are fed a high-starch diet despite the risk of health problems. Replacing starch concentrate with high-energy forage would alleviate these health problems, but could result in a shift in major substrates for muscle energy supply from glucose to short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) due to more hindgut fermentation of fibre. Dietary fat inclusion has previously been shown to promote aerobic energy supply during exercise, but the contribution of SCFA to exercise metabolism has received little attention.
This study compared metabolic response with exercise and lactate threshold (VLa4) in horses fed a forage-only diet (F) and a more traditional high-starch, low-energy forage diet (forage–concentrate diet - FC). The hypothesis was that diet F would increase plasma acetate concentration and increase VLa4 compared with diet FC. Six Standardbred geldings in race training were used in a 29-day change-over experiment. Plasma acetate, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), lactate, glucose and insulin concentrations and
venous pH were measured in samples collected before, during and after a treadmill exercise test (ET, day 25) and muscle glycogen concentrations before and after ET. Plasma acetate concentration was higher before and after exercise in horses on diet F compared with diet FC, and there was a tendency ( P50.09) for increased VLa4 on diet F. Venous pH and plasma glucose concentrations during exercise were higher in horses on diet F than diet FC, as was plasma NEFA on the day after ET. Plasma insulin and muscle glycogen concentrations were lower for diet F, but glycogen utilisation was similar for the two diets. The results show that a high-energy, forage-only diet alters the metabolic response to exercise and, with the exception of lowered glycogen stores, appears to have positive rather than negative effects on performance traits
Kondo effect of non-magnetic impurities and the co-existing charge order in the cuprate superconductors
We present a theory of Kondo effect caused by an induced magnetic moment near
non-magnetic impurities such as Zn and Li in the cuprate superconductors. Based
on the co-existence of charge order and superconductivity, a natural
description of the induced moment and the resulting Kondo effect is obtained in
the framework of bond-operator theory of microscopic t-J-V Hamiltonian. The
local density of state near impurities is computed in a self-consistent
Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory which shows a low-energy peak in the middle of
superconducting gap. Our theory also suggests that the charge order can be

Efficacy of Telephone Information and Advice on Welfare: the Need for Realist Evaluation
In the context of increased marketisation in welfare provision, formal information and advice (I&A) is widely assumed to enable users, as consumers, to make informed choices about services, support and care. There is emerging evidence that telephone I&A services represent important ways of providing such services. This article proposes a framework that identifies key areas of focus delineating the efficacy of I&A, which is then used in a comprehensive literature review to critique existing research on outcomes and/or impact of telephone I&A. Existing, predominately quantitative, research has critical weaknesses. There is a lack of adequate contextual focus, understanding agency, and how I&A is used in different contexts to influence causal processes. The article contends that the efficacy of I&A is not adequately reported and provides much needed theoretical clarity in key areas, including the desirability of further realist evaluation approaches
Impurity and interface bound states in and superconductors
Motivated by recent discoveries of novel superconductors such as
NaCoOHO and SrRuO, we analysize features of
quasi-particle scattering due to impurities and interfaces for possible gapful
and Cooper pairing. A bound state appears near
a local impurity, and a band of bound states form near an interface. We
obtained analytically the bound state energy, and calculated the space and
energy dependent local density of states resolvable by high-resolution scanning
tunnelling microscopy. For comparison we also sketch results of impurity and
surface states if the pairing is nodal p- or d-wave.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
An investigation of a criterion- referenced test using G-theory, and factor and cluster analyses
There has been relatively little research on analytical procedures for examin ing the dependability and validity of criterion-referenced tests especially when compared to similar investigations for norm-referenced ESL or EFL tests. This study used three analytical procedures, namely, G-theory, factor and cluster analyses, to investigate the dependability and validity of a criterion-referenced test developed at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1989. Dependability estimates showed that test scores are not equally depend able for all placement groups and are rather undependable for two out of the four placement groups. Factor analysis of test scores for the placement groups showed that though two-factor solutions were the best solutions for the different groups, there were differences in the way the subtests loaded in the different groups, with progressively fewer subtests loading on the second factor as ability increased. Associations between udder health and reproductive performance in United Kingdom dairy cows
The objective of this research was to evaluate the relationship between udder health and reproductive performance in UK dairy cows. Data from 80 herds were restructured such that each unit of data represented a 2-d period during lactation where a cow was at risk of becoming pregnant. Multilevel discrete-time survival models were then used within a Bayesian framework to explore associations between reproductive outcomes and a variety of potential explanatory variables. Separate models were constructed using 2 different univariate binary outcomes: a cow becoming pregnant during a risk period and a cow becoming pregnant as a result of a given service. Potential explanatory variables included occurrence of clinical mastitis and a categorical representation of individual cow somatic cell count (SCC), both at a variety of timings relative to the risk period. Posterior predictions were used to assess model fit and to check model building assumptions. These demonstrated that the model represented the data well. Within-sample Monte Carlo simulation (i.e., use of the model to predict outcomes for cases within the data set, repeated over a large number of iterations) was used to illustrate results as posterior predicted relative risks. A negative association was found between reproductive performance and cases of clinical mastitis over a wide time frame relative to the risk period (from 28 d before to 70 d after the risk period). A similar negative association with the probability of a service leading to a pregnancy (pregnancy rate) was observed over the same time frame. Higher SCC recordings (i.e., those more likely to be associated with an intramammary infection) were also associated with decreased reproductive performance, especially where an individual cow SCC of greater than 399,000/mL was recorded in the 30 d following a risk period or service. This research demonstrates that both clinical and subclinical mastitis are associated with a reduction in reproductive performance, and that this influence varies in magnitude but can be exerted over a prolonged period
