Effects of precompetition state anxiety interventions on performance time and accuracy among amateur soccer players: Revisiting the matching hypothesis
In this study, we tested the matching ypothesis, which contends that administration of a cognitive or somatic anxiety intervention should be matched to a participant's dominant anxiety response. Sixty-one male soccer players (mean age 31.6 years, s=6.3) were assigned to one of four groups based on their responses to the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, which was modified to include a directional scale. Interventions were randomly administered in a counterbalanced order 10 min before each performance trial on a soccer skill test. The dominantly cognitive anxious group (n=17), the dominantly somatic anxious group (n=17), and the non-anxious control intervention group (n=14) completed a baseline performance trial. The second and third trials were completed with random administration of brief cognitive and somatic interventions. The non-anxious control group (n=13) completed three trials with no intervention. A mixed-model, GroupTreatment multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant (P0.05), or performance time or accuracy (P>0.05). On reminder effects, drop-outs and dominance: evidence from an online experiment on charitable giving
We present the results of an experiment that (a) shows the usefulness of screening out drop-outs and (b) tests whether different methods of payment and reminder intervals affect charitable giving. Following a lab session, participants could make online donations to charity for a total duration of three months. Our procedure justifying the exclusion of drop-outs consists in requiring participants to collect payments in person flexibly and as known in advance and as highlighted to them later. Our interpretation is that participants who failed to collect their positive payments under these circumstances are likely not to satisfy dominance. If we restrict the sample to subjects who did not drop out, but not otherwise, reminders significantly increase the overall amount of charitable giving. We also find that weekly reminders are no more effective than monthly reminders in increasing charitable giving, and that, in our three months duration experiment, standing orders do not increase giving relative to one-off donations
Dysmetabolic circulating tumor cells are prognostic in metastatic breast cancer
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) belong to a heterogeneous pool of rare cells, and a unequivocal phenotypic definition of CTC is lacking. Here, we present a definition of metabolically-altered CTC (MBA-CTCs) as CD45-negative cells with an increased extracellular acidification rate, detected with a single-cell droplet microfluidic technique. We tested the prognostic value of MBA-CTCs in 31 metastatic breast cancer patients before starting a new systemic therapy (T0) and 3\u20134 weeks after (T1), comparing results with a parallel FDA-approved CellSearch (CS) approach. An increased level of MBA-CTCs was associated with: I) a shorter median PFS pre-therapy (123 days vs. 306; p < 0.0001) and during therapy (139 vs. 266 days; p = 0.0009); ii) a worse OS pre-therapy (p = 0.0003, 82% survival vs. 20%) and during therapy (p = 0.0301, 67% survival vs. 38%); iii) good agreement with therapy response (kappa = 0.685). The trend of MBA-CTCs over time (combining data at T0 and T1) added information with respect to separate evaluation of T0 and T1. The combined results of the two assays (MBA and CS) increased stratification accuracy, while correlation between MBA and CS was not significant, suggesting that the two assays are detecting different CTC subsets. In conclusion, this study suggests that MBA allows detection of both EpCAM-negative and EpCAM-positive, viable and label-free CTCs, which provide clinical information apparently equivalent and complementary to CS. A further validation of proposed method and cut-offs is needed in a larger, separate study
Quantum Statistics of Surface Plasmon Polaritons in Metallic Stripe Waveguides
Single surface plasmon polaritons are excited using photons generated via
spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The mean excitation rates, intensity
correlations and Fock state populations are studied. The observed dependence of
the second order coherence in our experiment is consistent with a linear
uncorrelated Markovian environment in the quantum regime. Our results provide
important information about the effect of loss for assessing the potential of

Spontaneous flux in a d-wave superconductor with time-reversal-symmetry-broken pairing state at {110} boundaries
The induction of an s-wave component in a d-wave superconductor is
considered. Near the {110}-oriented edges of such a sample, the induced s-wave
order parameter together with d-wave component forms a complex combination
d+e^{i\phi} s, which breaks the time reversal symmetry (BTRS) of the pairing
state. As a result, the spontaneous current is created. We numerically study
the current distribution and the formation of the spontaneous flux induced by
the current. We show that the spontaneous flux formed from a number of defect
lines with {110} orientation has a measurable strength. This result may provide
a unambiguous way to check the existence of BTRS pairing state at

Characterization and social correlates of fecal testosterone and cortisol excretion in wild male Saguinus mystax
Reproductive success in male primates can be influenced by testosterone (T) and cortisol (C). We examined them in wild Saguinus mystax via fecal hormone analysis. Firstly, we wanted to characterize male hormonal status over the course of the year. Further we tested the influence of the reproductive status of the breeding female, social instability, and intergroup encounter rates on T levels, comparing the results with predictions of the challenge hypothesis (Wingfield et al., 1990). We also tested for interindividual differences in hormonal levels, possibly related to social or breeding status. We collected data during a 12-mo study on 2 groups of moustached tamarins at the Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco in northeastern Peru. We found fairly similar T and C levels over the course of the year for all males. Yet an elevation of T shortly after the birth of infants, during the phase of ovarian inactivity of the group’s breeding female, was evident. Hormonal levels were not significantly elevated during a phase of social instability, did not correlate with intergroup encounter rates, and did not differ between breeding and nonbreeding males. Our results confirm the challenge hypothesis (Wingfield et al., 1990). Complete Intersections with S^1-action
We give the diffeomorphism classification of complete intersections with
S^1-symmetry in dimension less than or equal to 6. In particular, we show that
a 6-dimensional complete intersection admits a smooth non-trivial S^1-action if
and only if it is diffeomorphic to the complex projective space or the quadric.
We also prove that in any odd complex dimension only finitely many complete

ac Josephson effect in superconducting d-wave junctions
We study theoretically the ac Josephson effect in superconducting planar
d-wave junctions. The insulating barrier assumed to be present between the two
superconductors may have arbitrary strength. Many properties of this system
depend on the orientation of the d-wave superconductor: we calculate the ac
components of the Josephson current. In some arrangements there is substantial
negative differential conductance due to the presence of mid-gap states. We
study how robust these features are to finite temperature and also comment on
how the calculated current-voltage curves compare with experiments. For some
other configurations (for small barrier strength) we find zero-bias conductance
peaks due to multiple Andreev reflections through midgap states. Moreover, the
odd ac components are strongly suppressed and even absent in some arrangements.
This absence will lead to a doubling of the Josephson frequency. All these
features are due to the d-wave order parameter changing sign when rotated
. Recently, there have been several theoretical reports on parallel
current in the d-wave case for both the stationary Josephson junction and for
the normal metal-superconductor junction. Also in our case there may appear
current density parallel to the junction, and we present a few examples when
this takes place. Finally, we give a fairly complete account of the method used
and also discuss how numerical calculations should be performed in order to
produce current-voltage curves
Tacit collusion, firm asymmetries and numbers:evidence from EC merger cases
The purpose of this paper is to identify empirically the implicit structural model, especially the roles of size asymmetries and concentration, used by the European Commission to identify mergers with coordinated effects (i.e. collective dominance). Apart from its obvious policy-relevance, the paper is designed to shed empirical light on the conditions under which tacit collusion is most likely. We construct a database relating to 62 candidate mergers and find that, in the eyes of the Commission, tacit collusion in this context virtually never involves more than two firms and requires close symmetry in the market shares of the two firms
