    Are you a spontaneous traveler? Effect of sensation seeking on tourist planfulness in the mobile era

    Drawn upon optimum stimulation level theory, and in view of the impact of mobile terminal usage on tourist decision-making, the present study aims to investigate how personality (i.e., sensation seeking) influences tourist trip planning behavior (i.e., tourist planfulness) in the mobile era. A sample of 344 respondents in China completed measures of sensation seeking, travel risk perception, smartphone usage, as well as tourist planfulness. Results indicated that sensation seeking was negatively associated with tourist planfulness and travel risk perception partially mediated this association. Besides, both the direct effect of sensation seeking on tourist planfulness and the indirect effect of travel risk perception were moderated by smartphone usage, in that these effects were stronger for tourists with a high-level of smartphone usage than those with low-level smartphone usage. This study can significantly advance existing research on tourist behavior from the perspective of personality and reconfiguring our traditional understanding on tourist decision-making in the mobile era. Our study may also provide indicative support for theoretical perspective that information technology is changing customer behavior

    An investigation into the effects of destination sensory experiences at visitors’ digital engagement : empirical evidence from Sanya, China

    This study investigates the mechanism of how sensory experiences influence visitors’ digital engagement with a destination through establishing a strong bond and identification between a destination and tourist utilizing a two-step process. First, visitors’ sensory experiences in a destination are identified through a content analysis of online review comments posted by visitors. Afterward, the effects of those sensory experiences on visitors’ digital engagement through destination dependence and identification with that destination are examined. Findings suggest that sensory experiences are critical antecedents of visitors’ bond and identification with a destination. Visitors’ positive destination-related sensory experiences increase their dependence on and identification with the destination, and this dependence and identification positively influence their digital engagement behavior on social media

    Dark tourism spectrum : visual expression of dark experience

    Dark-light spectrum was used to express the depth of dark experience in dark tourism. Based on embodied cognition theory, this paper examined the visual expression of tourists' dark tourism experience. Five consecutive studies were conducted including analysis of tourists' photos in online reviews of 53 dark tourism destinations worldwide, charcoal pencil painting tasks of selected dark tourism sites in lab experiments, and field experiment. Results showed that tourists with darker experience tend to use deeper visual darkness to express their feelings, in the forms of painting and photographs, even when the cognitive process (i.e., expression in the form of words) is omitted. This psychological mechanism explains the scientific principle behind dark tourism spectrum. Our research suggests a new way of interpretation of tourist image data (e.g., photos) and sheds light for effective management of tourist experience

    The cooperative transition of sulfur-containing pollutants of H2S/CO/H2 to the high-value chemical methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) is catalyzed by Mo-based catalysts and has good application prospects. Herein, a series of Al2O3-supported molybdenum carbide catalysts with K doping (denoted herein as K-Mo2C/Al2O3) are fabricated by the impregnation method, with the carbonization process occurring under different atmospheres and different temperatures between 400 and 600 °C. The CH4-K-Mo2C/Al2O3 catalyst carbonized by CH4/H2 at 500 °C displays unprecedented performance in the synthesis of CH3SH from CO/H2S/H2, with 66.1% selectivity and a 0.2990 g·gcat−1·h−1 formation rate of CH3SH at 325 °C. H2 temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray diffraction and Raman and BET analyses reveal that the CH4-K-Mo2C/Al2O3 catalyst contains more Mo coordinatively unsaturated surface sites that are responsible for promoting the adsorption of reactants and the desorption of intermediate products, thereby improving the selectivity towards and production of CH3SH. This study systematically investigates the effects of catalyst carbonization and passivation conditions on catalyst activity, conclusively demonstrating that Mo2C-based catalyst systems can be highly selective for producing CH3SH from CO/H2S/H2

    Abstract Background Drug resistance prevents the effective treatment of cancers. DNA methylation has been found to participate in the development of cancer drug resistance. Methods We performed the wound-healing and invasion assays to test the effect of the paraoxonase gene PON3 on esophageal cancer (EC) cells. In addition, in vivo EC-derived tumor xenografts in nude mice were generated to test the effect of PON3 on the chemoresistance of EC cells. Results We found that PON3 is hypermethylated in drug-resistant EC cell line K150, which in-return down-regulates its expression. The following experiments by the forced changes of PON3 level in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that the PON3 expression negatively correlates with drug resistance in EC cells. Further wound-healing and invasion assays showed that PON3 suppresses the migration and invasion of EC cells. Conclusion Our data established that PON3 is associated with the EC drug resistance, which may serve as a biomarker for the potential therapeutic treatment of EC
