A note on Neuberger's double pass algorithm

We analyze Neuberger's double pass algorithm for the matrix-vector multiplication R(H).Y (where R(H) is (n-1,n)-th degree rational polynomial of positive definite operator H), and show that the number of floating point operations is independent of the degree n, provided that the number of sites is much larger than the number of iterations in the conjugate gradient. This implies that the matrix-vector product (H)1/2YR(n1,n)(H)Y (H)^{-1/2} Y \simeq R^{(n-1,n)}(H) \cdot Y can be approximated to very high precision with sufficiently large n, without noticeably extra costs. Further, we show that there exists a threshold nT n_T such that the double pass is faster than the single pass for n>nT n > n_T , where nT1225 n_T \simeq 12 - 25 for most platforms.Comment: 18 pages, v3: CPU time formulas are obtained, to appear in Physical Review

Fast H.264 intra prediction for network video processing

    Get PDF
This letter proposes a fast parallel and deeply pipelined architecture for realtime H. 264 intra 4x4 prediction capable of handling up to 32 High Definition video streams (1920x1080 @ 30 fps) simultaneously, while offering high flexibility and consuming only a fraction of resources available on modern FPGA's. The design has been validated on target using a state of the art Altera Stratix IV FPGA

Validity of common ultrasound methods of fetal weight estimation in late pregnancy among women in Kwale, Niger Delta region, Nigeria.

Background: Accuracy of some ultrasound equations used in our locality for fetal weight estimation is doubtful. Objective: To assess the accuracy of common ultrasound equations used for fetal weight estimation.Subjects and Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted on selected Nigerian obstetric population at Central Hospital, Kwale between March, 2009 and January, 2011. Sonography was performed on 412 women with advanced singleton cyesis and measurements of BPD, HC, AC, and FL were obtained and figured into 12 common ultrasound equations for the estimation of fetal weight. The actual birth weight at delivery was recorded. Results: The highest intraclass correlation coefficient was generated by the Hadlock 5 and Hsieh 2 equations. The least mean absolute percent error was obtained with Hsieh 2 equation, followed by Woo 3, and Hadlock 5. These equations also had the least percentage error and the least range of limits of agreement in the same order with no significant difference between their mean fetal weight estimates and that of the actual birth weight (p > 0.05). All twelve equations had strong positive correlation with the actual birth weight with Nzeh 2 equation the least. Conclusion: Hsieh 2 equation has the best accuracy in fetal weight estimation studied.Key Words: Validation; Fetal Weight; Sonography; Advanced Cyesis; Nigerian Populatio

Reply to Catalán : double-proton-transfer dynamics of photo-excited 7-azaindole dimers

The letter by Catalán (1) is concerned with the nature of double-proton transfer in dimers of 7-azaindole (7-AI), and the pertinent issue is whether or not the reaction is concerted. The subject is not new, and, for organic reactions, it has been discussed in the literature for decades. It is now understood that the concerted/consecutive mechanism has to be defined based on the timescale of the vibration motions and the family of coherent trajectories involved (ref. 2 and references therein). For double-proton transfer in isolated dimers, this timescale criterion has been invoked, and, as supported by a variety of time-resolved experiments in several groups and also by theory (ref. 3 and references therein), the conclusion is that the reaction is not concerted on the timescale of the vibrations involved; Catalán and some researchers (see ref. 3) assert that the two protons move in exact concert, maintaining the C_(2h) symmetry at all times

An Analysis of Assertive Speech Act Used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh in English Interpretation for Tour Guide Virtual Exchange Course at Asia University

This study aims to analyze assertive speech acts used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh during the teaching and learning process of exchange students. This study uses the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985:182-192) which explains the types of assertive speech acts. Qualitative descriptive is the method used in conducting this research, with data analysis techniques. The aims of this research are 1) to identify the dominant types of assertive speech acts used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh 2) To find out what the intended meaning is found in Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh. The findings show that there are 12 types and 153 utterances. Stating 60 times (39.21%), asserting 23 times (15.03%), reporting 22 times (14.37%), suggesting (9.80%), claiming 8 times (5.22%), concluding 7 times (4.57%), assuring 5 times (3.26%), confessing 5 times (3.26%), praising 4 times (2.61%), guessing 2 times (1.30 %). %), criticizing 1 time (0.65%), reminding 1 time (0.65%). Stating is the most dominant used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh during the teaching and learning process, stating can be the core of source information especially for the unfamiliar course and out of major course in the class. Stating be a way to intercultural students to get more information because it is possible to convey information clearly and effectively because it acts as a provider of information and explanations to students so that the use of stating can help students to enrich their knowledge as well as understand the message conveyed easily and does not lead to wrong interpretations. Then, the intended meaning found in these utterances is about grading policies, technical issues and roll call codes. This intended meaning funstions as take action behind the utterance, which is  students should concern and comprehent to do something behind the utterance. Majorana Fermion Induced Resonant Andreev Reflection

We describe experimental signatures of Majorana fermion edge states, which form at the interface between a superconductor and the surface of a topological insulator. If a lead couples to the Majorana fermions through electron tunneling, the Majorana fermions induce \textit{resonant} Andreev reflections from the lead to the grounded superconductor. The linear tunneling conductance is 00 (2e2/h2 e^2/h) if there is an even (odd) number of vortices in the superconductor. Similar resonance occurs for tunneling into the zero mode in the vortex core. We also study the current and noise of a two-lead device.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Discussion on STM tunneling into the Majorana zero mode in the vortex core is adde
