PrimPol bypasses UV photoproducts during eukaryotic chromosomal DNA replication
DNA damage can stall the DNA replication machinery, leading to genomic instability. Thus, numerous mechanisms exist to complete genome duplication in the absence of a pristine DNA template, but identification of the enzymes involved remains incomplete. Here, we establish that Primase-Polymerase (PrimPol; CCDC111), an archaeal-eukaryotic primase (AEP) in eukaryotic cells, is involved in chromosomal DNA replication. PrimPol is required for replication fork progression on ultraviolet (UV) lightdamaged DNA templates, possibly mediated by its ability to catalyze translesion synthesis (TLS) of these lesions. This PrimPol UV lesion bypass pathway is not epistatic with the Pol h-dependent pathway and, as a consequence, protects xeroderma pigmentosum variant (XP-V) patient cells from UV-induced cytotoxicity. In addition, we establish that PrimPol is also required for efficient replication fork progression during an unperturbed S phase. These and other findings indicate that PrimPol is an important player in replication fork progression in eukaryotic cells

Non-equilibrium Phase Transitions with Long-Range Interactions
This review article gives an overview of recent progress in the field of
non-equilibrium phase transitions into absorbing states with long-range
interactions. It focuses on two possible types of long-range interactions. The
first one is to replace nearest-neighbor couplings by unrestricted Levy flights
with a power-law distribution P(r) ~ r^(-d-sigma) controlled by an exponent
sigma. Similarly, the temporal evolution can be modified by introducing waiting
times Dt between subsequent moves which are distributed algebraically as P(Dt)~
(Dt)^(-1-kappa). It turns out that such systems with Levy-distributed
long-range interactions still exhibit a continuous phase transition with
critical exponents varying continuously with sigma and/or kappa in certain
ranges of the parameter space. In a field-theoretical framework such
algebraically distributed long-range interactions can be accounted for by
replacing the differential operators nabla^2 and d/dt with fractional
derivatives nabla^sigma and (d/dt)^kappa. As another possibility, one may
introduce algebraically decaying long-range interactions which cannot exceed
the actual distance to the nearest particle. Such interactions are motivated by
studies of non-equilibrium growth processes and may be interpreted as Levy
flights cut off at the actual distance to the nearest particle. In the
continuum limit such truncated Levy flights can be described to leading order
by terms involving fractional powers of the density field while the

UBC-Nepal expedition: The use of oral antioxidants does not alter cerebrovascular function at sea-level or high-altitude
Hypoxia is associated with an increased systemic and cerebral formation of free radicals and associated reactants that may be linked to impaired cerebral vascular function a neurological sequela. To what extent oral antioxidants prophylaxis impacts cerebrovascular function in humans throughout the course of acclimatization to the hypoxia of terrestrial high-altitude has not been examined. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of orally ingested antioxidants at clinically relevant doses (vitamin C, E, and alpha-lipoic acid) on cerebrovascular regulation at sea-level (344 m; n = 12; female n = 2 participants), and at high altitude (5050 m; n = 9; female n = 2), in a randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blinded crossover design. Hypercapnic and hypoxic cerebrovascular reactivity tests of the internal carotid (ICA)] were conducted at sea-level, while global and regional cerebral blood flow [i.e. ICA and vertebral artery (VA)] were assessed after 10â12 days following arrival at 5050 m. At sea-level, acute administration of antioxidants did not alter cerebral hypoxic cerebrovascular reactivity (pre vs. post: 1.5 Âą 0.7 vs. 1.2 Âą 0.8 %âCBF/-%âSpO2; P = 0.96), or cerebral hypercapnic cerebrovascular reactivity (pre vs. post: 5.7 Âą 2.0 vs. 5.8 Âą 1.9 %âCBF/âmmHg; P = 0.33). Furthermore, global cerebral blood flow (P = 0.43), as well as cerebral vascular conductance (ICA P = 0.08; VA P = 0.32), were unaltered at 5050 m following antioxidant administration. In conclusion, these data show that an oral antioxidant cocktail known to attenuate systemic oxidative stress failed to alter cerebrovascular function at sea-level and cerebral blood flow during acclimatization to high-altitude
ROPS: A New Search for Habitable Earths in the Southern Sky
We present the first results from our Red Optical Planet Survey (ROPS) to
search for low mass planets orbiting late type dwarfs (M5.5V - M9V) in their
habitable zones (HZ). Our observations, with the red arm of the MIKE
spectrograph (0.5 - 0.9 microns) at the 6.5 m Magellan Clay telescope at Las
Campanas Observatory indicate that >= 92 per cent of the flux lies beyond 0.7
microns. We use a novel approach that is essentially a hybrid of the
simultaneous iodine and ThAr methods for determining precision radial
velocities. We apply least squares deconvolution to obtain a single high S/N
ratio stellar line for each spectrum and cross correlate against the
simultaneously observed telluric line profile, which we derive in the same way.
Utilising the 0.62 - 0.90 micron region, we have achieved an r.m.s. precision
of 10 m/s for an M5.5V spectral type star with spectral S/N ~160 on 5 minute
timescales. By M8V spectral type, a precision of ~30 m/s at S/N = 25 is
suggested, although more observations are needed. An assessment of our errors
and scatter in the radial velocity points hints at the presence of stellar
radial velocity variations. Of our sample of 7 stars, 2 show radial velocity
signals at 6-sigma and 10-sigma of the cross correlation uncertainties. If the
signals are planetary in origin, our findings are consistent with estimates of
Neptune mass planets that predict a frequency of 13 - 27 per cent for early M
dwarfs.Our current analysis indicates the we can achieve a sensitivity that is
equivalent to the amplitude induced by a 6 M_Earth planet orbiting in the
habitable zone. Based on simulations, we estimate that <10 M_Earth habitable
zone planets will be detected in a new stellar mass regime, with <=20 epochs of

Remarkably, this is stable throughout the entire lifespan of the Republic and not just in the later years and despite the varying content of votes across the lifespan of the Republic, and (2) that nearly all parties were troubled by intra-party divisions, though, in particular, the national socialists and communists became homogeneous in the final years of the Republic.Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstan
Idiopathic giant abdominal lymph cyst: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Giant lymph cysts are a relatively frequent complication after surgical procedures in the abdomen, often after kidney transplantation, but there are also cases after pelvic surgery such as lymphadenectomy and others. In the recent literature, there have been no reported cases of idiopathic giant lymphocyst.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a 76-year-old Caucasian man who had a lymph cyst he had known of for more than 15 years. Laparoscopic treatment was necessary because of hydronephrosis of the left kidney.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case shows that laparoscopic drainage and partial resection of the lymph cyst is a safe and effective treatment.</p
Directly Imaging Rocky Planets from the Ground
Over the past three decades instruments on the ground and in space have
discovered thousands of planets outside the solar system. These observations
have given rise to an astonishingly detailed picture of the demographics of
short-period planets, but are incomplete at longer periods where both the
sensitivity of transit surveys and radial velocity signals plummet. Even more
glaring is that the spectra of planets discovered with these indirect methods
are either inaccessible (radial velocity detections) or only available for a
small subclass of transiting planets with thick, clear atmospheres. Direct
detection can be used to discover and characterize the atmospheres of planets
at intermediate and wide separations, including non-transiting exoplanets.
Today, a small number of exoplanets have been directly imaged, but they
represent only a rare class of young, self-luminous super-Jovian-mass objects
orbiting tens to hundreds of AU from their host stars. Atmospheric
characterization of planets in the <5 AU regime, where radial velocity (RV)
surveys have revealed an abundance of other worlds, is technically feasible
with 30-m class apertures in combination with an advanced AO system,
coronagraph, and suite of spectrometers and imagers. There is a vast range of
unexplored science accessible through astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy
of rocky planets, ice giants, and gas giants. In this whitepaper we will focus
on one of the most ambitious science goals --- detecting for the first time
habitable-zone rocky (<1.6 R_Earth) exoplanets in reflected light around nearby

The Impact of Global Warming and Anoxia on Marine Benthic Community Dynamics: an Example from the Toarcian (Early Jurassic)
The Pliensbachian-Toarcian (Early Jurassic) fossil record is an archive of natural data of benthic community response to global warming and marine long-term hypoxia and anoxia. In the early Toarcian mean temperatures increased by the same order of magnitude as that predicted for the near future; laminated, organic-rich, black shales were deposited in many shallow water epicontinental basins; and a biotic crisis occurred in the marine realm, with the extinction of approximately 5% of families and 26% of genera. High-resolution quantitative abundance data of benthic invertebrates were collected from the Cleveland Basin (North Yorkshire, UK), and analysed with multivariate statistical methods to detect how the fauna responded to environmental changes during the early Toarcian. Twelve biofacies were identified. Their changes through time closely resemble the pattern of faunal degradation and recovery observed in modern habitats affected by anoxia. All four successional stages of community structure recorded in modern studies are recognised in the fossil data (i.e. Stage III: climax; II: transitional; I: pioneer; 0: highly disturbed). Two main faunal turnover events occurred: (i) at the onset of anoxia, with the extinction of most benthic species and the survival of a few adapted to thrive in low-oxygen conditions (Stages I to 0) and (ii) in the recovery, when newly evolved species colonized the re-oxygenated soft sediments and the path of recovery did not retrace of pattern of ecological degradation (Stages I to II). The ordination of samples coupled with sedimentological and palaeotemperature proxy data indicate that the onset of anoxia and the extinction horizon coincide with both a rise in temperature and sea level. Our study of how faunal associations co-vary with long and short term sea level and temperature changes has implications for predicting the long-term effects of âdead zonesâ in modern oceans
