Peer Mentors and Writing Center Tutors: What our collaborations taught us about serving the SJSU Freshmen Students
The Library Outpost, a satellite office of the campusâs Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, seeks ways to reach out to First Year students who are new to writing research papers. One of our goals is to meet the First Year students on their own turf. Since the Peer Mentors and Writing Center tutors have peer relationships with the First year students, we want to learn how we can collaborate with them to provide services to the First year students. We surveyed the Peer Mentors and Writing Center Tutors to assess their perceptions of their own research skills, and their studentsâ research needs to guide the services and workshops offered by the Library Outpost
Heat transport measurements in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection
We present experimental heat transport measurements of turbulent
Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection with rotation about a vertical axis. The fluid,
water with Prandtl number () about 6, was confined in a cell which had
a square cross section of 7.3 cm7.3 cm and a height of 9.4 cm. Heat
transport was measured for Rayleigh numbers Ra and Taylor numbers Ta . We show the variation of
normalized heat transport, the Nusselt number, at fixed dimensional rotation
rate , at fixed Ra varying Ta, at fixed Ta varying Ra, and at fixed
Rossby number Ro. The scaling of heat transport in the range to about
is roughly 0.29 with a Ro dependent coefficient or equivalently is also
well fit by a combination of power laws of the form .
The range of Ra is not sufficient to differentiate single power law or combined
power law scaling. The overall impact of rotation on heat transport in
turbulent convection is assessed.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure
Cetacean High-Use Habitats of the Northeast United States Continental Shelf
Results of the Cetacean and Turtle Assessment Program previously demonstrated at a qualitative level that specific areas of the continental shelf waters off the northeastern U.S. coast consistently showed high-density utilization by several cetacean species. We have quantified, on a multispecies basis and with adjustment for level of survey effort, the intensity of habitat use by whales and dolphins, and defined areas of expecially high-intensity utilization. The results demonstrate that the area off the northeast United States, which is used most intensively as cetacean habitat, is the western margin of the Gulf of Maine, from the Great South Channel to Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. Secondary high-use areas include the continental shelf edge and the region around the eastern end of Georges Bank. High-use areas for piscivorous cetaceans are concentrated mainly in the western Gulf of Maine and secondarily at mid-shelf east of the Chesapeake region, for planktivores in the western Gulf of Maine and the southwestern and eastern portions of Georges Bank, and for teuthivores along the edge of the shelf. In general, habitat use by cetaceans is highest in spring and summer, and lowest in fall and winter
Seasonal Movements, Migratory Behavior, and Site Fidelity of West Indian Manatees along the Atlantic Coast of the United States as Determined by Radio-telemetry
The study area encompassed the eastern coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,
including inland waterways such as the St. Johns River (Fig. 1). Manatees inhabited the
relatively narrow band of water that lies between the barrier beaches and the mainland,
occasionally venturing into the ocean close to shore. Between Miami and Fernandina Beach,
Florida, 19 inlets provided manatees with corridors between the intracoastal waters and the
Atlantic Ocean; the distance between adjacent inlets averaged 32 km(SD = 24 km) and varied
from 3 to 88 km. Habitats used by manatees along this 900-km stretch ofcoastline varied
widely and included estuaries, lagoons, rivers and creeks, shallow bays and sounds, and ocean
inlets. Salinities in most areas were brackish, but ranged from completely fresh to completely
marine. The predominant communities of aquatic vegetation also varied geographically and
with salinity: seagrass meadows and mangrove swamps in brackish and marine waters along the
southern half of peninsular Florida; salt marshes in northeastern Florida and Georgia; benthic
macroalgae in estuarine and marine habitats; and a variety of submerged, floating, and emergent
vegetation in freshwater rivers, canals, and streams throughout the region.
Radio-telemetry has been used successfully to track manatees in other regions ofFlorida
(Bengtson 1981, Powell and Rathbun 1984, Lefebvre and Frohlich 1986, Rathbun et al. 1990)
and Georgia (Zoodsma 1991), but these early studies relied primarily on conventional VHF (very
high frequency) transmitters and were limited in their spatial and temporal scope (see O'Shea
and Kochman 1990 for overview). Typically, manatees were tagged at a thermal refuge in the
winter and then tracked until the tag detached, usually sometime between the spring and fall of
the same year. Our study differs from previous research on manatee movements in several
important respects. First, we relied heavily on data from satellite-monitored transmitters using
the Argos system, which yielded a substantially greater number of locations and more systematic
collection of data compared to previous VHF tracking studies (Deutsch et al. 1998). Second, our
tagging and tracking efforts encompassed the entire range of manatees along the Atlantic coast,
from the Florida Keys to South Carolina, so inferences were not limited to a small geographic
area. Third, we often used freshwater to lure manatees to capture sites, which allowed tagging
in all months of the year; this provided more information about summer movement patterns than
had previous studies which emphasized capture and tracking at winter aggregations. Finally, the
study spanned a decade, and success in retagging animals and in replacing transmitters allowed
long-term tracking ofmany individuals. This provided the opportunity to investigate variation in
seasonal movements, migratory behavior, and site fidelity across years for individual manatees.

Free-Flight Investigation of Heat Transfer to an Unswept Cylinder Subjected to an Incident Shock and Flow Interference from an Upstream Body at Mach Numbers up to 5.50
Heat-transfer rates have been measured in free flight along the stagnation line of an unswept cylinder mounted transversely on an axial cylinder so that the shock wave from the hemispherical nose of the axial cylinder intersected the bow shock of the unswept transverse cylinder. Data were obtained at Mach numbers from 2.53 to 5.50 and at Reynolds numbers based on the transverse cylinder diameter from 1.00 x 10(exp 6) to 1.87 x 10(exp 6). Shadowgraph pictures made in a wind tunnel showed that the flow field was influenced by boundary-layer separation on the axial cylinder and by end effects on the transverse cylinder as well as by the intersecting shocks. Under these conditions, the measured heat-transfer rates had inconsistent variations both in magnitude and distribution which precluded separating the effects of these disturbances. The general magnitude of the measured heating rates at Mach numbers up to 3 was from 0.1 to 0.5 of the theoretical laminar heating rates along the stagnation line for an infinite unswept cylinder in undisturbed flow. At Mach numbers above 4 the measured heating rates were from 1.5 to 2 times the theoretical rates
Human Health/Human Factors Considerations in Trans-Lunar Space
The human factors insights of how they are incorporated into the vehicle are crucial towards designing and planning the internal designs necessary for future spacecraft and missions. The adjusted mission concept of supporting the Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission will drive some human factors changes on how the Orion will be used and will be reassessed so as to best contribute to missions success. Recognizing what the human factors and health functional needs are early in the design process and how to integrate them will improve this and future generations of space vehicles to achieve mission success and continue to minimize risks
Foreign direct investment and spillovers : gradualism may be better

In contrast, this paper claims that the very existence of spillovers may require temporarily restricting FDI. Our argument is based on two features of spillovers: they are limited by the economy's absorptive capacity and they take time to materialize. By letting in capital more gradually, initial investment has the time to create spillovers â and upgrade the economy's absorptive capacity â before further investment occurs. Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Evidence of Glial Effects of Cumulative Lead Exposure in the Adult Human Hippocampus
Background: Exposure to lead is known to have adverse effects on cognition in several different populations. Little is known about the underlying structural and functional correlates of such exposure in humans. Objectives: We assessed the association between cumulative exposure to lead and levels of different brain metabolite ratios in vivo using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Methods: We performed MRS on 15 men selected from the lowest quintile of patella bone lead within the Department of Veterans Affairsâ Normative Aging Study (NAS) and 16 from the highest to assess in the hippocampal levels of the metabolites N-acetylaspartate, myoinositol, and choline, each expressed as a ratio with creatine. Bone lead concentrationsâindicators of cumulative lead exposureâwere previously measured using K-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. MRS was performed on the men from 2002 to 2004. Results: A 20-ÎŒg/g bone and 15-ÎŒg/g bone higher patella and tibia bone lead concentrationâthe respective interquartile ranges within the whole NASâwere associated with a 0.04 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.00â0.08; p = 0.04] and 0.04 (95% CI, 0.00â0.08; p = 0.07) higher myoinositol-to-creatine ratio in the hippocampus. After accounting for patella bone lead declines over time, analyses adjusted for age showed that the effect of a 20-ÎŒg/g bone higher patella bone lead level doubled (0.09; 95% CI, 0.01â0.17; p = 0.03). Conclusions: Cumulative lead exposure is associated with an increase in the myinositol-to-creatine ratio. These data suggest that, as assessed with MRS, glial effects may be more sensitive than neuronal effects as an indicator of cumulative exposure to lead in adults

Involvement in community partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University has its roots in the institution\u27s history. The Medical College of Virginia, founded in1838, and the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, both sought to extend knowledge into the community to change peoples\u27 lives for the better. Today, the VCU campuses are even more entwined with the City of Richmond -- physically, and increasingly so as a partner in the economic and social challenges and opportunities facing the City
