    Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3

    Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe3_{3} and LaCrGe3_{3} have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility χ(T)\chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity ρ(T)\rho(T), specific heat C(TT) and thermoelectric power S(TT) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P63_{3}/mmc}), as previously reported. The ρ(T)\rho(T), χ(T)\chi(T) and C(TT) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe3_{3} and CeCrGe3_{3} with TCT_{C} = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C(TT) data of CeCrGe3_{3}. The T dependences of ρ\rho and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient γ\gamma obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the TT dependence of ρ\rho of CeCrGe3_{3} reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced γ\gamma of 130 mJ/mol\,K2^{2} together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the ρ(T)\rho(T) establish CeCrGe3_{3} as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of \sim 45.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures.     Dirac Point and Edge States in a Microwave Realization of Tight-Binding Graphene-like Structures

    We present a microwave realization of finite tight-binding graphene-like structures. The structures are realized using discs with a high index of refraction. The discs are placed on a metallic surface while a second surface is adjusted atop the discs, such that the waves coupling the discs in the air are evanescent, leading to the tight-binding behavior. In reflection measurements the Dirac point and a linear increase close to the Dirac point is observed, if the measurement is performed inside the sample. Resonances due to edge states are found close to the Dirac point if the measurements are performed at the zigzag-edge or at the corner in case of a broken benzene ring.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Mass spectrometric comparison of swift heavy ion-induced and anaerobic thermal degradation of polymers

    The study of polymers irradiated by highly energetic ions and the resulting radiation-induced degradation is of major importance for space and particle accelerator applications. The mechanism of ion-induced molecular fragmentation of polyethylene, polyethyleneimine and polyamide was investigated by means of mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the introduction of nitrogen and oxygen into the polymer influences the stability rendering aliphatic polymers with heteroatoms less stable. A comparison to thermal decomposition data from literature reveals that ion-induced degradation is different in its bond fracture mechanism. While thermal degradation starts at the weakest bond, which is usually the carbon-heteroatom bond, energetic ion irradiation leads in the first step to scission of all types of bonds creating smaller molecular fragments. This is due to the localized extreme energy input under non-equilibrium conditions when the ions transfer kinetic energy onto electrons.     The relationship between modified Graeb score and intraventricular hematoma volume with Glasgow outcome scale and modified Rankin scale in intraventricular hemorrhage of brain: a comparative study

    Background: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is an acute neurosurgical condition. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between modified Graeb score (mGS) and intraventricular hematoma volume with Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) and modified Rankin scale (mRS).Methods: This is a Quasi-experimental study conducted in the department of neurosurgery, Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Chittagong, Bangladesh during the period from 24 July 2018 to 23 July 2019. After a detailed history and clinical examination, 150 patients were selected for this study. The study participants were divided into two major groups- external ventricular drainage (EVD) and conservative; both groups consisted of 44 patients. Written informed consent were taken from the participants. Data were analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software.Results: Overall mean age was around 60 years with an age range from 15-85 years. More than three fourth of the patients in both groups were from the age group of >50 years (73.83%). There were no differences between EVD and conservative groups regarding medical comorbidities. Most prevalent comorbidity among the patients of both groups’ hypertension, followed by diabetes and previous ischemic stroke. Overall the most frequent symptoms in the studied patients were vomiting, followed by loss of consciousness, headache and convulsion. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding presenting symptoms. The mean Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score level was significantly lower in the patients with EVD than their counterpart from 1st post-operative day to 8th post-operative day. However, within-group comparison shows that the GCS score was significantly increased from 1st day to 8th day in both groups of patients.Conclusions: These findings can be used to identify patients in whom an EVD may provide measurable outcomes benefit with respect to patient mortality and help guide neurosurgical decision-making in particular patient subgroups with acute IVH

    Antiferromagnetic ordering in the Kondo lattice system Yb2_2Fe3_3Si5_5

    Compounds belonging to the R2_2Fe3_3Si5_5 series exhibit unusual superconducting and magnetic properties. Although a number of studies have been made on the first reentrant antiferromagnet superconductor Tm2_2Fe3_3Si5_5, the physical properties of Yb2_2Fe3_3Si5_5 are largely unexplored. In this work, we attempt to provide a comprehensive study of bulk properties such as, resistivity, susceptibility and heat-capacity of a well characterized polycrystalline Yb2_2Fe3_3Si5_5. Our measurements indicate that Yb3+^{3+} moments order antiferromagnetically below 1.7 K. Moreover, the system behaves as a Kondo lattice with large Sommerfeld coefficient (γ\gamma) of 0.5~J/Yb mol K2^{2} at 0.3 K, which is well below TN_N. The absence of superconductivity in Yb2_2Fe3_3Si5_5 down to 0.3 K at ambient pressure is attributed to the presence of the Kondo effect.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, tex document.     On the Lubricity and Comparative Life Cycle of Biobased Synthetic and Mineral Oil Emulsions in Machining Titanium Ti-6Al-4V at Low Cutting Speed

    The paper discusses an instrumented tapping test method using a CNC machine tool to compare the lubricity of MWFs by cutting threads in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy at low speed. The method uses a spiral flute tap size typical of industrial practice. A soft synchronous tap holder and spindle mounted dynamometer were incorporated on the machine to measure torque and thrust force. The tapping test method was demonstrated on three groups of MWFs that were commercially available and classified by ASTM E2523-13:2018. The method developed stable results free of chip clogging in tool flutes which could otherwise mask their comparative lubricity. The fully synthetic (FS) group displayed the best lubricity and within this group the FS from renewables (FS-bio) was the best overall. The method was shown to be effective in mitigating biasing effects on lubricity performance due to the generous tool chamfer angle tolerance and was practical and economical to implement. The significance of the results is discussed enabling an understanding of friction effects in tapping using a soft synchronous tap holder. A life cycle assessment of each MWF group found total Greenhouse Gas emitted from the FS group was 17% of the hydrocarbon group whilst FS-bio emitted just 7%

Among the candidate materials, semiconductors are attractive because of their light weight and ease in handling. Currently, we are looking into the suitability of boron arsenide (B12As2) for this specific application. As the first step in evaluating the material qualitatively, the photo-response of B12As2 bulk crystals to light with different wavelengths was examined. The crystals showed photocurrent response to a band of 407- and 470- nm blue light. The maximum measured photoresponsivity and the photocurrent density at 0.7 V for 470 nm blue light at room temperature were 0.25 A.W-1 and 2.47 mA.cm(-2), respectively. In addition to photo current measurements, the electrical properties as a function of temperature (range: 50-320 K) were measured. Reliable data were obtained for the low-temperature I-V characteristics, the temperature dependence of dark current and its density, and the resistivity variations with temperature in B12As2 bulk crystals. The experiments showed an exponential dependence on temperature for the dark current, current density, and resistivity; these three electrical parameters, respectively, had a variation of a few nA to mu A, 1-100 mu A.cm(-2) and 7.6x10(5)-7.7x10(3) Omega.cm, for temperature increasing from 50 K to 320 K. The results from this study reported the first photoresponse and demonstrated that B12As2 is a potential candidate for thermal-neutron detectors. (C) 2016 Author(s)

    Convergence of Humans, Bats, Trees, and Culture in Nipah Virus Transmission, Bangladesh.

    Preventing emergence of new zoonotic viruses depends on understanding determinants for human risk. Nipah virus (NiV) is a lethal zoonotic pathogen that has spilled over from bats into human populations, with limited person-to-person transmission. We examined ecologic and human behavioral drivers of geographic variation for risk of NiV infection in Bangladesh. We visited 60 villages during 2011-2013 where cases of infection with NiV were identified and 147 control villages. We compared case villages with control villages for most likely drivers for risk of infection, including number of bats, persons, and date palm sap trees, and human date palm sap consumption behavior. Case villages were similar to control villages in many ways, including number of bats, persons, and date palm sap trees, but had a higher proportion of households in which someone drank sap. Reducing human consumption of sap could reduce virus transmission and risk for emergence of a more highly transmissible NiV strain
