Compressed sensing with near-field THz radiation
We demonstrate a form of near-field terahertz (THz) imaging that is compatible with compressed sensing algorithms. By spatially photomodulating THz pulses using a set of shaped binary optical patterns and employing a 6-μm-thick silicon wafer, we are able to reconstruct THz images of an object placed on the exit interface of the wafer. A single-element detector is used to measure the electric field amplitude of transmitted THz radiation for each projected pattern, with the ultra-thin wafer allowing us to access the THz evanescent near fields to achieve a spatial resolution of ∼9 μm∼9 μm
Characterizing Planetary Orbits and the Trajectories of Light
Exact analytic expressions for planetary orbits and light trajectories in the
Schwarzschild geometry are presented. A new parameter space is used to
characterize all possible planetary orbits. Different regions in this parameter
space can be associated with different characteristics of the orbits. The
boundaries for these regions are clearly defined. Observational data can be
directly associated with points in the regions. A possible extension of these
considerations with an additional parameter for the case of Kerr geometry is

An evaluation of isotopic (d2H) methods to provide estimates of avian breeding and natal dispersal
Natal and breeding dispersal represents an important component of animal demography and metapopulation theory. This phenomenon also has implications for conservation and management because understanding movements of individuals potentially allows the identification of key habitats that may be acting as population sources or sinks. Intrinsic markers such as stable isotope abundance in tissues that can be associated with provenance can provide a coarse but pragmatic solution to understanding such movements. Different methodologies have been proposed to quantify natal and breeding dispersal by using stable isotope analyses of keratinous tissues (hair, feathers), each of them with their own advantages and limitations. Here, we compared results provided by four different methods to estimate dispersal (three already published and one novel) in animals using stable isotope measurements. We used a single large dataset of feather δ2H values from golden-winged warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) representing five different populations breeding in North America to compare model results. We propose one method as the most adequately supported by data, and we used this method to demonstrate how biological factors explaining dispersal status can be identified and geographical origins of immigrants inferred. Our results point to a generalized methodological approach to using stable isotope data to study immigration and dispersal in birds and other animals
High resolution AMI Large Array imaging of spinning dust sources: spatially correlated 8 micron emission and evidence of a stellar wind in L675
We present 25 arcsecond resolution radio images of five Lynds Dark Nebulae
(L675, L944, L1103, L1111 & L1246) at 16 GHz made with the Arcminute
Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array. These objects were previously observed
with the AMI Small Array to have an excess of emission at microwave frequencies
relative to lower frequency radio data. In L675 we find a flat spectrum compact
radio counterpart to the 850 micron emission seen with SCUBA and suggest that
it is cm-wave emission from a previously unknown deeply embedded young
protostar. In the case of L1246 the cm-wave emission is spatially correlated
with 8 micron emission seen with Spitzer. Since the MIR emission is present
only in Spitzer band 4 we suggest that it arises from a population of PAH
molecules, which also give rise to the cm-wave emission through spinning dust

AMI observations of unmatched Planck ERCSC LFI sources at 15.75 GHz
The Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue includes 26 sources with no
obvious matches in other radio catalogues (of primarily extragalactic sources).
Here we present observations made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Small
Array (AMI SA) at 15.75 GHz of the eight of the unmatched sources at
declination > +10 degrees. Of the eight, four are detected and are associated
with known objects. The other four are not detected with the AMI SA, and are

Microwave observations of spinning dust emission in NGC6946
We report new cm-wave measurements at five frequencies between 15 and 18GHz
of the continuum emission from the reportedly anomalous "region 4" of the
nearby galaxy NGC6946. We find that the emission in this frequency range is
significantly in excess of that measured at 8.5GHz, but has a spectrum from
15-18GHz consistent with optically thin free-free emission from a compact HII
region. In combination with previously published data we fit four emission
models containing different continuum components using the Bayesian spectrum
analysis package radiospec. These fits show that, in combination with data at
other frequencies, a model with a spinning dust component is slightly preferred
to those that possess better-established emission mechanisms.Comment: submitted MNRA
A spectral method for elliptic equations: the Dirichlet problem
An elliptic partial differential equation Lu=f with a zero Dirichlet boundary
condition is converted to an equivalent elliptic equation on the unit ball. A
spectral Galerkin method is applied to the reformulated problem, using
multivariate polynomials as the approximants. For a smooth boundary and smooth
problem parameter functions, the method is proven to converge faster than any
power of 1/n with n the degree of the approximate Galerkin solution. Examples
in two and three variables are given as numerical illustrations. Empirically,
the condition number of the associated linear system increases like O(N), with
