Field-induced coupled superconductivity and spin density wave order in the Heavy Fermion compound CeCoIn5
The high field superconducting state in CeCoIn5 has been studied by
transverse field muon spin rotation measurements with an applied field parallel
to the crystallographic c-axis close to the upper critical field Hc2 = 4.97 T.
At magnetic fields >= 4.8 T the muon Knight shift is enhanced and the
superconducting transition changes from second order towards first order as
predicted for Pauli-limited superconductors. The field and temperature
dependence of the transverse muon spin relaxation rate sigma reveal
paramagnetic spin fluctuations in the field regime from 2 T < H < 4.8 T. In the
normal state close to Hc2 correlated spin fluctuations as described by the self
consistent renormalization theory are observed. The results support the
formation of a mode-coupled superconducting and antiferromagnetically ordered
phase in CeCoIn5 for H directed parallel to the c-axis.Comment: 5 paes, 4 figure
Site-Dilution in quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet Sr2(Cu1-xPdx)O3: reduction of Neel Temperature and spatial distribution of ordered moment sizes
We investigate the Neel temperature of Sr2CuO3 as a function of the site
dilution at the Cu (S=1/2) sites with Pd (S=0), utilizing the muon spin
relaxation (muSR) technique. The Neel temperature, which is Tn=5.4K for the
undoped system, becomes significantly reduced for less than one percent of
doping Pd, giving a support for the previous proposal for the good
one-dimensionality. The Pd concentration dependence of the Neel temperature is
compared with a recent theoretical study (S. Eggert, I. Affleck and M.D.P.
Horton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 47202 (2002)) of weakly coupled one-dimensional
antiferromagnetic chains of S=1/2 spins, and a quantitative agreement is found.
The inhomogeneity of the ordered moment sizes is characterized by the muSR time
spectra. We propose a model that the ordered moment size recovers away from the
dopant S=0 sites with a recovery length of \xi = 150-200 sites. The origin of
the finite recovery length \xi for the gapless S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain is
compared to the estimate based on the effective staggered magnetic field from

Muonium as a shallow center in GaN
A paramagnetic muonium (Mu) state with an extremely small hyperfine parameter
was observed for the first time in single-crystalline GaN below 25 K. It has a
highly anisotropic hyperfine structure with axial symmetry along the [0001]
direction, suggesting that it is located either at a nitrogen-antibonding or a
bond-centered site oriented parallel to the c-axis. Its small ionization energy
(=< 14 meV) and small hyperfine parameter (--10^{-4} times the vacuum value)
indicate that muonium in one of its possible sites produces a shallow state,
raising the possibility that the analogous hydrogen center could be a source of
n-type conductivity in as-grown GaN.Comment: 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Letter
Dimensionality of spin modulations in 1/8-doped lanthanum cuprates from the perspective of NQR and muSR experiments
We investigate the dimensionality of inhomogeneous spin modulation patterns
in the cuprate family of high-temperature superconductors with particular focus
on 1/8-doped lanthanum cuprates. We compare one-dimensional stripe modulation
pattern with two-dimensional checkerboard of spin vortices in the context of
nuclear quadrupole resonance(NQR) and muon spin rotation(muSR) experiments. In
addition, we also consider the third pattern, a two-dimensional superposition
of spin spirals. Overall, we have found that none of the above patterns leads
to a consistent interpretation of the two types of experiments considered.
This, in particular, implies that the spin vortex checkerboard cannot be ruled
out on the basis of available NQR/muSR experimental results.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
A common behavior of thermoelectric layered cobaltites: incommensurate spin density wave states in [CaCoCuO][CoO] and [CaCoO][CoO]
Magnetism of a misfit layered cobaltite
[CaCoCuO][CoO] ( 0.62, RS
denotes a rocksalt-type block) was investigated by a positive muon spin
rotation and relaxation (SR) experiment. A transition to an
incommensurate ({\sf IC}) spin density wave ({\sf SDW}) state was found below
180 K (= ); and a clear oscillation due to a static
internal magnetic field was observed below 140 K (= ). Furthermore,
an anisotropic behavior of the zero-field SR experiment indicated that
the {\sf IC-SDW} propagates in the - plane, with oscillating moments
directed along the c axis. These results were quite similar to those for the
related compound [CaCoO][CoO], {\sl i.e.},
CaCoO. Since the {\sf IC-SDW} field in
[CaCoCuO][CoO] was approximately
same to those in pure and doped [CaCoO][CoO], it
was concluded that the {\sf IC-SDW} exist in the [CoO] planes.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens.

Evidence for endohedral muonium in Kx C60 and consequences for electronic structure
Positive muons injected into solid C60, K4C60, and K6C60 form vacuumlike muonium (μ+e-) with a (6–12)% probability. Observation of coherent spin precession of muonium establishes that all three materials are nonmagnetic and nonconducting at low temperatures. From the temperature dependence of the signals we estimate the electronic band gaps in K4C60 and K6C60 to be considerably smaller than in C60. The similarity of the muonium centers supports a model in which a muonium atom is caged inside the C60 molecule in pure C60 or the C60x molecular ion in KxC60
Influence of the magnetic sublattices in the double perovskite LaCaNiReO6
The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and timescales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation, and resonance (μ+SR) microscopic technique and bulk ac/dc magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO6 double perovskite. As a result, we are able to discern and report ferrimagnetic ordering below TC=102K and the formation of different magnetic domains above TC. Between TC<T<270K, the following two magnetic environments appear, a dense spin region and a static-dilute spin region. The paramagnetic state is obtained only above T>270K. An evolution of the interaction between Ni and Re magnetic sublattices, in this geometrically frustrated fcc perovskite structure, is revealed as a function of temperature through the critical behavior and thermal evolution of microscopic and macroscopic physical quantities
Muon spin relaxation studies of incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity in stage-4 LaCuO and LaSrCuO
This paper reports muon spin relaxation (MuSR) measurements of two single
crystals of the title high-Tc cuprate systems where static incommensurate
magnetism and superconductivity coexist. By zero-field MuSR measurements and
subsequent analyses with simulations, we show that (1) the maximum ordered Cu
moment size (0.36 Bohr magneton) and local spin structure are identical to
those in prototypical stripe spin systems with the 1/8 hole concentration; (2)
the static magnetism is confined to less than a half of the volume of the
sample, and (3) regions with static magnetism form nano-scale islands with the
size comparable to the in-plane superconducting coherence length. By
transverse-field MuSR measurements, we show that Tc of these systems is related
to the superfluid density, in the same way as observed in cuprate systems
without static magnetism. We discuss a heuristic model involving percolation of
these nanoscale islands with static magnetism as a possible picture to
reconcile heterogeneity found by the present MuSR study and long-range spin
