Chiral currents and static properties of nucleons in holographic QCD
We analyze static properties of nucleons in the two flavor holographic QCD
model of Sakai and Sugimoto described effectively by a five-dimensional U(2)
Yang-Mills theory with the Chern-Simons term on a curved background. The
baryons are represented in this model as a soliton, which at a time slice is
approximately the BPST instanton with a fixed size. First, we construct a
chiral current in four dimensions from the Noether current of local gauge
transformations which are non-vanishing on the boundaries of the extra
dimension. We examine this chiral current for nucleons with quantized
collective coordinates to compute their charge distribution, charge radii,
magnetic moments and axial vector coupling. Most of the results are better
close to the experimental values than in the Skyrme model. We discuss the
problems of our chiral current; non-uniqueness of the local gauge
transformation for defining the current, and its gauge-noninvariance.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure; a footnote added in sec. 4.4, minor correction

Radioprotective Effect of Alk(en)yl Thiosulfates Derived from Allium Vegetables against DNA Damage Caused by X-Ray Irradiation in Cultured Cells: Antiradiation Potential of Onions and Garlic
To evaluate a radioprotective effect of sodium n-propyl thiosulfate (NPTS) and sodium 2-propenyl thiosulfate (2PTS) derived from onions and garlic, respectively, rat hepatoma H4IIE cells and mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells were preincubated with each of these compounds for 48 hours at 37°C before receiving 10 Gy of X-ray irradiation. Cell damage caused by the irradiation was quantified as comet tail moment, which represents the degree of DNA damage. X-ray-induced DNA damage was significantly decreased in both H4IIE and L5178Y cells by micromolar concentrations of NPTS and 2PTS compared with the control without the compounds. The protective effect was more potent with 2PTS than NPTS. Onions and garlic have antiradiation potential
Research Activities in the Department of Physical Therapy
[Introduction] It is already fifty years since the Japanese law of physical therapists and occupational therapists has been effective. The physical therapist is referred by the law as "the professionals who implements the physical therapy to persons with disabilities under the prescription of medical doctors". In fifty years, however, the target of physical therapy has been significantly expanded. The subject for physical therapy now includes the patients in acute disease just after the surgical operation in addition to those in rehabilitation stage. In other words, the physical therapy is now recognized as the indispensable intervention to the subject with acute as well as chronic disorders. On the other hand, due to a rapid transition of the society into the aged society, prevention of diseases, and decline of activity capacity due to the aging have become major issues for the physical therapy
Measurements of atmospheric muon spectra at mountain altitude
We report new measurements of the atmospheric muons at mountain altitude. The
measurement was carried out with the BESS detector at the top of Mt. Norikura,
Japan. The altitude is 2,770 m above sea level. Comparing our results and
predictions given by some interaction models, a further appropriate model has
been investigated. These studies would improve accuracy of atmospheric neutrino
calculations.Comment: Mean momentum in Table 1 was correcte
Measurements of Cosmic-ray Low-energy Antiproton and Proton Spectra in a Transient Period of the Solar Field Reversal
The energy spectra of cosmic-ray low-energy antiprotons and protons have been
measured by BESS in 1999 and 2000, during a period covering the solar magnetic
field reversal. Based on these measurements, a sudden increase of the
antiproton to proton flux ratio following the solar magnetic field reversal was
observed, and it generally agrees with a drift model of the solar modulation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Phys.
