Characterization of hydrothermal alteration along geothermal wells using unsupervised machine-learning analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data
Zonal distribution of hydrothermal alteration in and around geothermal fields is important for understanding the hydrothermal environment. In this study, we assessed the performance of three unsupervised classification algorithms—K-mean clustering, the Gaussian mixture model, and agglomerative clustering—in automated categorization of alteration minerals along wells. As quantitative data for classification, we focused on the quartz indices of alteration minerals obtained from rock cuttings, which were calculated from X-ray powder diffraction measurements. The classification algorithms were first examined by applying synthetic data and then applied to data on rock cuttings obtained from two wells in the Hachimantai geothermal field in Japan. Of the three algorithms, our results showed that the Gaussian mixture model provides classes that are reliable and relatively easy to interpret. Furthermore, an integrated interpretation of different classification results provided more detailed features buried within the quartz indices. Application to the Hachimantai geothermal field data showed that lithological boundaries underpin the data and revealed the lateral connection between wells. The method’s performance is underscored by its ability to interpret multi-component data related to quartz indices
Solution and gelling properties of gellan benzyl esters
Gellan benzyl esters of different degrees of esterification were prepared, and their gelation behavior was examined. Native gellan and gellan benzyl ester aqueous solutions and the ensuing aqueous gels obtained by cooling their solutions with added salt were studied by means of rheological and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments. Although esterification causes no fundamental changes in the gellan ordered structure, the introduction of bulky benzyl ester groups reduces the backbone propensity of double-helix formation and subsequent helix-helix association (gelation). In consequence, gellan-based gels become less stable both mechanically and thermally with esterification
Study of hadron interactions in a lead-emulsion target
Topological and kinematical characteristics of hadron interactions have been
studied using a lead-emulsion target exposed to 2, 4 and 10 GeV/c hadron beams.
A total length of 60 m tracks was followed using a high speed automated
emulsion scanning system. A total of 318 hadron interaction vertices and their
secondary charged particle tracks were reconstructed. Measurement results of
interaction lengths, charged particle multiplicity, emission angles and momenta
of secondary charged particles are compared with a Monte Carlo simulation and
appear to be consistent. Nuclear fragments emitted from interaction vertices
were also detected by a newly developed emulsion scanning system with
wide-angle acceptance. Their emission angle distributions are in good agreement
with the simulated distributions. Probabilities of an event being associated
with at least one fragment track are found to be greater than 50% for beam
momentum GeV/c and are well reproduced by the simulation. These
experimental results validate estimation of the background due to hadron
interactions in the sample of decay candidates in the OPERA oscillation experiment.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
Immunohistochemical Analysis of Neuroendocrine (NE) Differentiation in Testicular Germ Cell Tumors (GCTs): Use of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) to Demonstrate Direct NE Differentiation from GCTs
Neuroendocrine (NE) differentiation is infrequent in testicular tumors and its histogenesis is not well understood. The present study is aimed at elucidating the pathway of neuroendocrine differentiation in germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the testis. In the analysis of 46 germ cell tumor components from 23 testicular tumors, we focused on GCTs with neuroendocrine differentiation, 7 teratoma, 1 embryonal carcinoma and 1 neuroendocrine carcinoma by immunohistochemical study and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analysis. NE marker positive cells were noted in the tumor with collision of teratoma and embryonal carcinoma (E&T tumor), in the immature columnar cells of transitional form of embryonal carcinoma to teratoma (E-T cells) and neuroendocrine carcinoma cells, in addition to the well known mature intestinal mucosa in teratoma. Double staining for a NE marker (CGA) and a germ cell marker (PLAP) demonstrated the localization of both proteins in the same E-T cells confirmed by CLSM. Another finding, indicating the intimate relation between embryonal carcinoma and neuroendcrine differentiation, is that neuroendocrine carcinoma expressed a marker of embryonal carcinoma, CD30. The present results indicated that the NE cells might be differentiated from embryonal carcinoma, a view that has not been proposed before, but that is made in the present study using CLSM
Constraining temperature at depth of the Kakkonda geothermal field, Japan, using Bayesian rock-physics modelling of resistivity: Implications to the deep hydrothermal system
Temperature-at-depth estimation is important for assessing supercritical geothermal resources. Bayesian rock-physics modelling of electrical resistivity is effective for estimating temperatures at depth. In this study, we improved a previously proposed Bayesian framework and demonstrated its effectiveness by estimating subsurface temperatures in the Kakkonda geothermal field, Japan. The proposed framework allows the estimation of either effective porosities or salinities in addition to temperatures; further, we were able to constrain the possible states of the crustal fluid at depth based on the estimates. The estimated 3D temperature structure was consistent with available deep temperature logs. Furthermore, the estimated results suggest the existence of a magmatic-hydrothermal system at depth in the field
A Clinical Trial of Kampo Formulae for the Treatment of Symptoms of Yusho, a Poisoning Caused by Dioxins and Related Organochlorine Compounds
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional herbal medicines (Kampo) on the symptoms of Yusho. Yusho is a mass food poisoning that was caused by ingestion of rice oil contaminated with dioxins and related organochlorines in 1968. Patients with Yusho suffer from skin symptoms (acneform eruptions, liability to suppuration and pigmentation), respiratory symptoms (cough and expectoration of sputum), neurological symptoms (numbness and paresthesia of extremities), arthralgia and general fatigue, and no effective treatment has yet been developed. In this clinical trial, four Kampo formulae (Bakumondo-to, Keigai-rengyo-to, Gosha-jinki-gan and Hochu-ekki-to) were administered to four representative Yusho symptoms (respiratory, skin, neurological symptoms and general fatigue), respectively. Twenty-seven Yusho patients were enrolled and two formulae were administered to each patient for half-a-year each. The effectiveness of Kampo formulae was estimated by changes in the intensity of symptoms measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS) of 100 mm recorded at baseline and after administration of each formula. The influence of Kampo formulae on patients' quality of life (QOL) was also assessed by the SF-36 (NBS). Twenty-five patients completed the treatment. Bakumondo-to significantly improved respiratory symptoms as well as patients' QOL in the context of vitality, compared with other formulae. In contrast, Hochu-ekki-to impaired patients' QOL in the context of physical functioning and vitality, compared with other formulae. This study demonstrated for the first time that a Kampo formula Bakumondo-to is useful for treating respiratory symptoms caused by dioxins
血中の2,3,4,7,8-五塩化ダイベンゾフラン(PeCDF)の個人の半減期:油症患者における臨床症状並びに検診結果との関係
BACKGROUND:
In 1968, many people developed dioxin poisoning (Yusho) in Japan. Ingestion of 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran (2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF) was considered to be the cause of this poisoning. Although some patients had high concentrations of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF in their blood, individuals' half-lives of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF were long.
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the relationship between clinical and laboratory parameters and the individual half-life of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF in blood.
METHODS:
Clinical and laboratory data were collected during annual check-ups from 2001 to 2008. We enrolled 71 patients, who were measured more than 3 times, and who had 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF concentrations in blood >50pgg(-1) lipid. The half-life of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF for each patient was estimated using linear regression. Moreover, relationships between clinical and laboratory parameters and individual half-life were investigated by linear regression.
RESULTS:
A shortened individual half-life for 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF was significantly correlated with an increased red blood cell count, increased viscous secretions from the meibomian glands, existing black comedones, and severe cedar pollen allergy.
CONCLUSIONS:
Symptoms that accelerate excretion of lipids from the body, such as viscous secretions from the meibomian glands, may lead to a shorter half-life of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF. Red blood cells are related to the half-life of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF. However, further studies are required to investigate the excretory mechanism of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF.博士(医学)・乙1325号・平成26年3月17
Treatment Strategy for Recurrent and Refractory Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: Efficacy of High-Dose Chemotherapy with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
According to population statistics in Japan, approximately 3,800 women die of ovarian cancer annually, and approximately 6,000 are affected by this disease. Ovarian cancer is referred to as a “silent tumor”, since patients have few subjective symptoms and by the time symptoms are observed, the cancer has progressed to Stage III or IV in about half of the patients. The basic treatment for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer is to remove as much of the tumor as possible, and subsequently to perform anticancer therapy using drugs such as cisplatin, carboplatin and paclitaxel, all of which have been shown to be effective for epithelial ovarian cancer. However, the 5-year survival rate in advanced ovarian cancer patients is still only about 20%, and a treatment that leads to long-term survival has yet to be developed.
