    Estudos morfológicos e ontogenéticos com inflorescências e flores de Lepidagathis Willd. (Acanthaceae)

    The phylogeny of Acanthaceae, chiefly based on molecular data, confirms the monophyly of the family, however, a morphological synapomorphy to characterize it is still unknown. Apart from being well represented in our flora, the identification of its species is quite difficult due to taxonomic problems and lack of morphological studies. The family presents many morphological instabilities within genera, for example with the pattern of inflorescences. Lepidagathis Willd. serves as an example, presenting three types of inflorescence and divergent floral morphologies that have challenged its systematics. Therefore, exploring the morphology, anatomy, vascularization and development of the inflorescence and flowers, it was possible to find homologies between the studied species and speculate around its evolution. The patterns of the inflorescence were discovered to be enriched or depleted forms of the same architecture. On some species, there were more or less reproductive meristems on the axil of bracts, and therefore, more or less possibilities of developing flowers or partial inflorescences. The available phylogeny for the group suggests an equal probability of gain or loss of such reproductive meristems on the inflorescences. The development of the floral whorls on the studied species was the same, despite their different external morphology. Nevertheless, the vascularization of the flowers revealed important aspects of the floral evolution of the genus, showing that the anatomy may retain ancestral characteristics that relate the species. Thus, the display and volume of flowers of each inflorescence, and the size and arrangement of the flowers are more likely related to the pollination syndromes of each species. The results corroborate the current circumscription of Lepidagathis and encourages further investigations with Acanthaceae species that may lead to interesting discoveries on homologies and assist the phylogenetic studies with the familyA filogenia de Acanthaceae, sobretudo baseada em dados moleculares, confirma a monofilia da família, no entanto, ainda não se conhece uma sinapomorfia morfológica que a caracterize.     Ilustrações no vitral do Museu do Instituto de Botânica de São Paulo

    Apresentamos aqui alguns aspectos sobre a origem e o papel dos vitrais na arquitetura e seus primeiros empregos no Brasil, tanto no contexto decorativo quanto no de divulgação científica. Discutimos o estudo das plantas úteis no Brasil, sua relação com a história da Botânica e o papel do botânico Frederico Carlos Hoehne no contexto científico e de divulgação. Relacionamos também o emprego de ilustrações científicas ao amplo uso popular de espécies vegetais até o começo do século XX no Brasil, em especial aquelas de interesse ao ramo da medicina. Buscamos discutir tal relação por meio de análise e exposição das ilustrações botânicas presentes no vitral do Museu Botânico Dr. João Barbosa Rodrigues.Ressalta-se que, embora as imagens do vitral analisado não apresentem os detalhes e particularidades de cada planta, necessários para identificação de algumas das espécies, seu papel na relação entre arte e saúde se cumpre como objeto de divulgação do conhecimento científico no contexto do Museu Botânico. A abordagem de uma obra localizada em um museu acrescenta ainda à discussão o importante papel exercido por museus e jardins botânicos na divulgação científica de temas relacionados à botânica e preservação da biodiversidade. </jats:p

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora
