Les croix de chemin du Québec et la naissance du dévotionnalisme contemporain

Les croix de chemin québécoises ont été décrites comme une tradition attaquée sur deux plans. D’abord, par une église modernisatrice dont l’objectif est de limiter le dévotionnalisme. Ensuite, par les adeptes de la laïcité qui tentent de créer une sphère publique religieusement neutre. Cet article explore les interactions souvent ambivalentes entre la dévotion publique et privée de même qu’entre le catholicisme et la patrimonialisation. Les questions en jeu concernent le rôle des structures préconciliaires dans le paysage bâti du Québec rural, avec le but de montrer que cette forme de dévotionnalisme est conçue par les « propriétaires » de croix de chemin comme une nouvelle façon de vivre la foi catholique au XXIe siècle.Quebecois wayside crosses have been described as a tradition attacked on two fronts: by a modernizing postconciliar Catholic church seeking to limit devotionalism and by secularizing officials seeking to create a religiously neutral public sphere. This article explores the often ambivalent interactions between public and private devotions, as well as between Catholicism and "patrimonialisation". It foregrounds questions about the place of preconciliar structures in the built environment of rural Quebec, with the goal of showing how this form of devotionalism is conceived by wayside cross "caretakers" as a new way of living their Catholic faith in the twenty-first century
