Randomised controlled trial of primary school based intervention to reduce risk factors for obesity
OBJECTIVE: To assess if a school based intervention was
effective in reducing risk factors for obesity.
DESIGN: Group randomised controlled trial.
SETTING: 10 primary schools in Leeds.
PARTICIPANTS: 634 children aged 7Â-11 years.
INTERVENTION: Teacher training, modification of school
meals, and the development of school action plans
targeting the curriculum, physical education, tuck
shops, and playground activities.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Body mass index, diet,
physical activity, and psychological state.
RESULTS: Vegetable consumption by 24 hour recall was
higher in children in the intervention group than the
control group (weighted mean difference 0.3
portions/day, 95% confidence interval 0.2 to 0.4),
representing a difference equivalent to 50% of
baseline consumption. Fruit consumption was lower
in obese children in the intervention group ( - 1.0,
- 1.8 to - 0.2) than those in the control group. The
three day diary showed higher consumption of high
sugar foods (0.8, 0.1 to 1.6)) among overweight
children in the intervention group than the control
group. Sedentary behaviour was higher in overweight
children in the intervention group (0.3, 0.0 to 0.7).
Global self worth was higher in obese children in the
intervention group (0.3, 0.3 to 0.6). There was no
difference in body mass index, other psychological
measures, or dieting behaviour between the groups.
Focus groups indicated higher levels of self reported
behaviour change, understanding, and knowledge
among children who had received the intervention.
CONCLUSION: Although it was successful in producing
changes at school level, the programme had little
effect on children's behaviour other than a modest
increase in consumption of vegetables
Evaluation of implementation and effect of primary school based intervention to reduce risk factors for obesity
OBJECTIVES: To implement a school based health
promotion programme aimed at reducing risk factors
for obesity and to evaluate the implementation
process and its effect on the school.
DESIGN: Data from 10 schools participating in a group
randomised controlled crossover trial were pooled
and analysed.
SETTING: 10 primary schools in Leeds.
Participants 634 children (350 boys and 284 girls)
aged 7Â11 years.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Response rates to
questionnaires, teachers' evaluation of training and
input, success of school action plans, content of
school meals, and children's knowledge of healthy
living and self reported behaviour.
RESULTS: All 10 schools participated throughout the
study. 76 (89%) of the action points determined by
schools in their school action plans were achieved,
along with positive changes in school meals. A high
level of support for nutrition education and
promotion of physical activity was expressed by both
teachers and parents. 410 (64%) parents responded to
the questionnaire concerning changes they would like
to see implemented in school. 19 out of 20 teachers
attended the training, and all reported satisfaction
with the training, resources, and support. Intervention
children showed a higher score for knowledge,
attitudes, and self reported behaviour for healthy
eating and physical activity.
CONCLUSION: This programme was successfully
implemented and produced changes at school level
that tackled risk factors for obesity
Magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE-Au sulfide mineralisation in alkaline igneous systems: An example from the Sron Garbh intrusion, Tyndrum, Scotland
Magmatic sulfide deposits typically occur in ultramafic-mafic systems, however, mineralisation can occur in more intermediate and alkaline magmas. Sron Garbh is an appinite-diorite intrusion emplaced into Dalradian metasediments in the Tyndrum area of Scotland that hosts magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE-Au sulfide mineralisation in the appinitic portion. It is thus an example of magmatic sulfide mineralisation hosted by alkaline rocks, and is the most significantly mineralised appinitic intrusion known in the British Isles. The intrusion is irregularly shaped, with an appinite rim, comprising amphibole cumulates classed as vogesites. The central portion of the intrusion is comprised of unmineralised, but pyrite-bearing, diorites. Both appinites and diorites have similar trace element geochemistry that suggests the diorite is a more fractionated differentiate of the appinite from a common source that can be classed with the high Ba-Sr intrusions of the Scottish Caledonides. Mineralisation is present as a disseminated, primary chalcopyrite-pyrite-PGM assemblage and a blebby, pyrite-chalcopyrite assemblage with significant Co-As-rich pyrite. Both assemblages contain minor millerite and Ni-Co-As-sulfides. The mineralisation is Cu-, PPGE-, and Au-rich and IPGE-poor and the platinum group mineral assemblage is overwhelmingly dominated by Pd minerals; however, the bulk rock Pt/Pd ratio is around 0.8. Laser ablation analysis of the sulfides reveals that pyrite and the Ni-Co-sulfides are the primary host for Pt, which is present in solid solution in concentrations of up to 22 ppm in pyrite. Good correlations between all base and precious metals indicate very little hydrothermal remobilisation of metals despite some evidence of secondary pyrite and PGM. Sulfur isotope data indicate some crustal S in the magmatic sulfide assemblages. The source of this is unlikely to have been the local quartzites, but S-rich Dalradian sediments present at depth. The generation of magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE-Au mineralisation at Sron Garbh can be attributed to post-collisional slab drop off that allowed hydrous, low-degree partial melting to take place that produced a Cu-PPGE-Au-enriched melt, which ascended through the crust, assimilating crustal S from the Dalradian sediments. The presence of a number of PGE-enriched sulfide occurrences in appinitic intrusions across the Scottish Caledonides indicates that the region contains certain features that make it more prospective than other alkaline provinces worldwide, which may be linked the post-Caledonian slab drop off event. We propose that the incongruent melting of pre-existing magmatic sulfides or ârefertilisedâ mantle in low-degree partial melts can produce characteristically fractionated, Cu-PPGE-Au-semi metal bearing, hydrous, alkali melts, which, if they undergo sulfide saturation, have the potential to produce alkaline-hosted magmatic sulfide deposits
Innovations in Camera Trapping Technology and Approaches: The Integration of Citizen Science and Artificial Intelligence
Camera trapping has become an increasingly reliable and mainstream tool for surveying a diversity of wildlife species. Concurrent with this has been an increasing effort to involve the wider public in the research process, in an approach known as âcitizen scienceâ. To date, millions of people have contributed to research across a wide variety of disciplines as a result. Although their value for public engagement was recognised early on, camera traps were initially illâsuited for citizen science. As camera trap technology has evolved, cameras have become more userâfriendly and the enormous quantities of data they now collect has led researchers to seek assistance in classifying footage. This has now made camera trap research a prime candidate for citizen science, as reflected by the large number of camera trap projects now integrating public participation. Researchers are also turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist with classification of footage. Although this rapidlyâadvancing field is already proving a useful tool, accuracy is variable and AI does not provide the social and engagement benefits associated with citizen science approaches. We propose, as a solution, more efforts to combine citizen science with AI to improve classification accuracy and efficiency while maintaining public involvement

Design and analysis of a structural system for ZTH
A structural support system comprised largely of laminated epoxy fiberglass bulkheads has been designed for the ZTH air core machine, the initial experiment in the Confinement Physics Research Facility (CPRF) at LANL. Fiberglass was chosen to minimize magnetic field errors due to eddy currents. Magnetic fields for ZTH are produced, in part, by 18 poloidal field (PF) coils. Sixteen, equally spaced, 4 inch thick, radial G-10 bulkheads, positioned and held by a series of stainless steel ring beams, support the PF coils and the toroidal front end assembly. PF coils transfix and are supported by the bulkheads at locations dictated by magnetic field effects. The toroidal front end is mounted to the bulkheads by a spline ensuring constant alignment with the coil set while allowing differential expansion. The entire machine assembly is mounted on a central concrete cylinder with outboard stainless steel columns. Finite element analyses were performed as an integral part of the design process for the ZTH structure. Because of irregular shapes, multiple materials, different load cases and numerous geometric discontinuities conventional analyses of the structure could not be performed. Static and dynamic coil loads were applied to a model of the prototype support system to examine structural response. A discussion of the model, assumptions, load cases, boundary conditions, and results is given. Influence of the results on the design are presented. 3 refs

Monte Carlo simulation of metal deposition on foreign substrates
The deposition of a metal on a foreign substrate is studied by means of grand
canonical Monte Carlo simulations and a lattice-gas model with pair potential
interactions between nearest neighbors. The influence of temperature and
surface defects on adsorption isotherms and differential heat of adsorption is
considered. The general trends can be explained in terms of the relative
interactions between adsorbate atoms and substrate atoms. The systems
Ag/Au(100), Ag/Pt(100), Au/Ag(100) and Pt/Ag(100) are analyzed as examples.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure
