Creating a municipal gemeinschaft? Disputations of community

In 1926 two parcels of land outside the town’s boundaries – the Arrowe Park and Woodchurch Estates – were purchased by the County Borough of Birkenhead. The intention was that the land would be utilised for housing, but it was over twenty years before a single brick was laid on the estate. Although the development of the housing estate in itself provides an interesting insight into urban planning it is the fact that there appears that there may have been a deliberate attempt to create community through the built environment, and it is with this that this thesis is concerned. The main body of the work (Part III) has been divided into two parts, the first part of which examines the responses of four planners who submitted their schemes to the Town Council over two decades. It investigates the links between architecture and community in relation to the development of one particular municipal housing estate, and using architectural plans, and photographic evidence it will illustrate how each had, to some extent or other, followed in the steps of Unwin in order to create what they considered the ideal community. To what extent their schemes were to fit the lives of the people who were to live there will be considered in the second part of the narrative on community and the built environment. Using taped interviews it will examine the lived experiences of a small sample of the original residents, and will illustrate how a sense of community existed on the estate, independent of what the planners had intended for the residents. It will also establish how the life that they had led in the working-class areas of Birkenhead was transferred almost intact to Woodchurch

Premarital sex and condom use among trainee healthcare workers: an exploratory study of selected healthcare training institutions in Enugu State, Nigeria

Introduction: to assess the prevalence and causes of premarital sex and condom use among trainee healthcare workers in selected healthcare institutions in Enugu State, Nigeria; and to proffer solution to challenges identified. Methods: we used a mixed study approach with qualitative and quantitative components. Informed consent was obtained from participants and data collected using self-administered structured questionnaires. Epi info® was used for data analysis. Results: a total of 362 respondents (309 unmarried) from four healthcare training institutions participated in the study. Among unmarried respondents, 141(45.8%) were sexually active. Premarital sex was more common among Pentecostals and sexual activity increased with age (r=0.78; p <0.05). Premarital sexual activity was more common among males and trainee nurses (p <0.005). Although knowledge of condom use was high, actual use was poor (20.1%), with lowest rates among females, Catholics and age-group 30-35 years. Breakages, high failure rates and reduced sexual satisfaction were cited as major factors responsible for poor use. Use of non-specific terms such as "casual sex" and "casual or regular sex partners" hindered consistent, correct condom use. Conclusion: there is a significant gap between knowledge of and actual use of condoms, despite high premarital sexual activity amongst healthcare workers. Furthermore, non-specific terminologies hinders appropriate condom usage. We propose the term: Committed Spousal Partner (CSP) defined as "a sexual partner who commits to fidelity (one sexual partner per time) and whose current HIV status is known through medical testing and is properly documented" in place of all non-specific terminology

Cool Companions to White Dwarfs from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release

We present near-infrared magnitudes for all white dwarfs (selected from the catalog of McCook & Sion) contained in the 2 Micron All Sky Survey Second Incremental Data Release(2MASS 2IDR). We show that the near-IR color-color diagram is an effective means of identifying candidate binary stars containing a WD and a low mass main sequence star. The loci of single WDs and WD + red dwarf binaries occupy distinct regions of the near-IR color-color diagram. We recovered all known unresolved WD + red dwarf binaries located in the 2IDR sky coverage, and also identified as many new candidate binaries (47 new candidates out of 95 total). Using observational near-IR data for WDs and M-L dwarfs, we have compared a sample of simulated WD + red dwarf binaries with our 2MASS data. The colors of the simulated binaries are dominated by the low mass companion through the late-M to early-L spectral types. As the spectral type of the companion becomes progressively later, however, the colors of unresolved binaries become progressively bluer. XMM-Newton and optical follow-up observations of three new polars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We report follow-up XMM-Newton and optical observations of three new polars found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Simple modeling of the X-ray spectra, and consideration of the details of the X-ray and optical lightcurves corroborate the polar nature of these three systems and provide further insights into their accretion characteristics. During the XMM-Newton observation of SDSS J072910.68+365838.3, X-rays are undetected apart from a probable flare event, during which we find both the typical hard X-ray bremsstrahlung component and a very strong line O VII (E=0.57 keV), but no evidence of a soft blackbody contribution. In SDSS J075240.45+362823.2 we identify an X-ray eclipse at the beginning of the observation, roughly in phase with the primary minimum of the optical broad band curve. The X-ray spectra require the presence of both hard and soft X-ray components, with their luminosity ratio consistent with that found in other recent XMM-Newton results on polars. Lastly, SDSS J170053.30+400357.6 appears optically as a very typical polar, however its large amplitude optical modulation is 180 degrees out of phase with the variation in our short X-ray lightcurve.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ (January 2005

A covalently linked DNA-RNA molecule from human leukemia cells

An enzyme complex was prepared from the cytoplasm of a continuous line of monocytic human leukemia cells isotopically labeled in culture. Such preparations carry out RNA dependent DNA synthesis using endogenous primers and templates and contain radioactive RNA and DNA. The endogenous [3H]-thymidine labeled DNA in these preparations was characterized by sedimentation in Cs2SO4 and neutral sucrose density gradients in conjunction with heat and alkali treatments and digestion with RNase. The resulting data support a view that a portion of the DNA is covalently linked to a larger piece of RNA in a molecule with a sedimentation coefficient of approximately 24S. Clinical, neuroradiological, and molecular characterization of mitochondrial threonyl-tRNA-synthetase (TARS2)-related disorder

PURPOSE: Biallelic variants in TARS2, encoding the mitochondrial threonyl-tRNA-synthetase, have been reported in a small group of individuals displaying a neurodevelopmental phenotype, but with limited neuroradiological data and insufficient evidence for causality of the variants. METHODS: Exome or genome sequencing was carried out in 15 families. Clinical and neuroradiological evaluation was performed for all affected individuals, including review of 10 previously reported individuals. The pathogenicity of TARS2 variants was evaluated using in vitro assays, and a zebrafish model. RESULTS: We report 18 new individuals harboring biallelic TARS2 variants. Phenotypically, these individuals show developmental delay/intellectual disability, regression, cerebellar and cerebral atrophy, basal ganglia signal alterations, hypotonia, cerebellar signs and increased blood lactate. In vitro studies showed that variants within the TARS2301-381 region had decreased binding to Rag GTPases, likely impairing mTORC1 activity. The zebrafish model recapitulated key features of the human phenotype and unraveled dysregulation of downstream targets of mTORC1 signaling. Functional testing of the variants confirmed the pathogenicity in a zebrafish model. CONCLUSION: We define the clinico-radiological spectrum of TARS2-related mitochondrial disease, unveil the likely involvement of the mTORC1 signaling pathway as a distinct molecular mechanism, and establish a TARS2 zebrafish model as an important tool to study variant pathogenicity
