The effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on the fruit yield, growth and nutrient element content of strawberry cv. Fern were investigated under organic growing conditions between 2006 and 2008. The experimental plot was a completely randomized design with 3 replicates. Three PGPB strains (Pseudomonas BA-8, Bacillus OSU-142 and Bacillus M-3) were used alone or in combination as biofertilizer agent in the experiment. Data through 3 years showed that the use of PGPB significantly increased fruit yield, plant growth and leaf P and Zn contents. Root inoculation of M3 and floral and foliar spraying of OSU-142 and BA-8 bacteria stimulated plant growth resulting in significant yield increases. M3 + BA-8, BA-8 + OSU-142, M3, M3 + OSU-142 and BA-8 applications increased cumulative yield by 33.2%, 18.4%, 18.2%, 15.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Number of fruits per plant significantly increased by the applications of M3 + BA-8 (91.73) and M3 (81.58) compared with the control (68.66). In addition, P and Zn contents of strawberry leaves with bacterial inoculation significantly increased under organic growing conditions. Available P contents in soil were increased from 0.35 kg P2O5/da at the beginning of the study to 2.00, 1.97 and 1.82 kg P2O5/da by M3 + OSU-142, M3 + BA-8 and M3 + BA-8 + OSU-142 applications, respectively. Overall, the results of this study suggest that root inoculation of Bacillus M3 alone or in combination with spraying Bacillus OSU-142 or Pseudomonas BA-8 have the potential to increase the yield, growth and nutrition content of strawberry plant under organic growing conditions

Contents of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in Isatis demiriziana Mısırdalı: an endemic to the Southeast

    Get PDF
Isatis demiriziana Mısırdalı plant contains a number of compounds which has anticarcinogenic, antioxidant and other preventive effects. In this study, the flavonoid and phenolic contents in the plant samples harvested in the vegetative (leaf and root) and full flowering season (flower, leaf and root) were determined by LC-MS/MS. Among the 27 compounds studied, malic acid was found to be the most abundant compound in the methanolic extracts of samples and the amount of malic acid of vegetative root extracts were the highest (30124,37 µg g-1 dry-extract). Moreover, it was also determined considerable amount of salicylic acids and p-coumaric in the root extracts. This study is the first detailed study on the phenolic and flavonoid compounds of I. demiriziana. Based on the findings of this study, in further researches might be refered as an additional source in production of phenolic and flavonoid compounds

In vitro evaluation of tooth-colored yttria stabilized zirconia ceramics

Effects of MoCl3 and NiCl2, originally incorporated as coloring agent, on the cellular response of3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) ceramics was investigated. MoCl3 and NiCl2-MoCl3incorporated, tooth-colored 3Y-TZP ceramics were produced through cold isostatic pressing at100 MPa followed by pressureless sintering at 1450°C for 2 h. Aging was performed on thesintered ceramics using distilled water in a reactor at 134°C at 2.3 bar pressure for 2 h. Thephases developed during different stages of processing were identified by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis. In vitro cell culture studies were carried out using L929 fibroblast cell line. Thecell viability and proliferation studies revealed that none of the specimens showed cytotoxicitywith respect to coloring. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) analyses suggested thatall of the specimens exhibited good in vitro cytocompatibility. Enhancement in cell attachment, adhesion, and proliferation was observed in all specimens via scanning electron microscope(SEM) analysis. Although the coloring process did not improve the proliferationperformance of the aged specimens, the incorporation of transition metals enhanced thein vitro performance of 3Y-TZP ceramics

Synchronous Detection of Hairy Cell Leukemia and HIV-Negative Kaposi's Sarcoma of the Lymph Node: A Diagnostic Challenge and a Rare Coincidence

    Get PDF
Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is an uncommon chronic lymphoproliferative disorder and accounts for around 2% of all forms of leukemias. The association of HCL with other neoplasms, mainly non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, is well known. However, the simultaneous diagnosis of HCL and Kaposi's sarcoma is rare, with only few cases of such an association having been reported. We describe a 42-year-old male patient with a well characterized HCL and in whom HIV-negative Kaposi's sarcoma of the lymph node was detected

Impact of Hard Palate Angulation Caused by Septal Deviation on Maxillary Sinus Volume

Objective: To investigate the effect of hard palate angulation caused by septal deviation on the volume of the maxillary sinus. Methods: Coronal computed tomographic (CT) scans of 1568 patients aged from 18 to 60 were examined. CT scans of 402 patients were included in the study. On these scans, the maxillary sinus volume, the angle of the nasal septal deviation, and the angulation of the hard palate were calculated using the ImageJ software. Each maxillary sinus volume was statistically compared with each other and with those in the control group. Correlations between palatal angulation and septal deviation were determined. Results: Deviated nasal septum whether with or without deflection of the hard palate was noted to have caused changes in the volume of the maxillary sinus in both female and male patients. The volume of the maxillary sinus on the deviated side was less than that of the opposite side, and the differences between the volumes of both sinuses were statistically significant (p<0.05). No significant differences were noted when compared with the control group. A positive correlation was observed between the nasal septal deviation angle and the angulation of the hard palate. Conclusion: Regardless of whether or not it affects the hard palate, nasal septal deviation reduces the volume of the maxillary sinus on the deviated side but does not affect the total volume of the maxillary sinuses. Significant differences between the volumes on the two sides can lead to facial asymmetry

Objective:Workplace violence is an important source of problem for employees worldwide. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of exposure to violence among healthcare professionals, the type of violence they experienced and influencing occupational features, and to determine the healthcare professionals’ opinion about the causes of violence and the potential measures to be taken against violence in health. Methods:A 37-question survey was performed in 598 medical doctors and 357 healthcare assistants including nurses as well in Adana, Turkey. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 25.0 program was used for the statistical analysis of study data. Results:Of the 955 healthcare professionals participated in the study, 48.5% were male and 51.5% were female, and 85.9% have been subjected to violence at least once in their professional lifetime. The most common type of violence was psychological or verbal attack, which stated to be most frequently committed by the patient relatives and by male gender. Male healthcare workers were exposed to statistically significantly more physical violence. There was statistically significant correlation between the number of patients healthcare professionals dealt with in a day and the rate of exposure to violence. It was found that those who had been exposed to physical violence filed a complaint more than those who had been subjected to other forms of violence. Conclusion:High rates of violent behavior against healthcare workers are at worrying levels indicating that violence in health is a critical problem. Solution of this problem requires all parties’, primarily the health policy makers’ undertaking important tasks
